Chapter 1: A Strange Visitor

It was months ago that they broke free. Seven crashes, shatters rang through the air that day- and eventually she'd made her way to see the barrier. With each crash a wave of magic flew through the air. This wave fittingly looked like shattered glass flying out and disappearing. Then they were there.

Hundreds of monsters big and small all made their way out of Mount Ebott. The King and Queen stood looking out at the land, probably wondering about the many ways the landscape had changed over the hundreds of years they'd remained beneath the surface. There was a small human standing behind them. They looked stiff, almost fearful, staring down at the ground. A tall skeleton was standing at their flank, but creeping along slowly behind him was an even smaller werewolf.

He was only barely bigger than the human, and was a skeleton- but there was a werewolf. Another creature just like her. She could barely contain her excitement at the fact, but- for fear of death or perhaps torture by the royal family, she retreated back to her home deep into the forest.

Mount Ebott had a neighbor, Mount Grian, and she had discovered and expanse of caves and caverns perfect for the den of a werewolf. Of course, she managed some human amenities over the years. She'd built plumbing systems, garnered electricity from the outposts that riddled the forest. She mostly hunted for food, but had even managed to get a job in the neighboring village. At least what once was the neighboring village- now it had become a booming city. Hundreds of years changes a lot about a place.

One evening deep in the harsh winters of this area she was curled up in a corner. There was a recess in the cave wall that was ironically perfect for a fireplace. Some chute had been worn through the mountain all the way to the surface so as to keep smoke from building within the den.

She was wrapped thoroughly with about ten blankets, far enough from the fire not to be a hazard. Her tail was shoved between her legs, wrapped around her wrists while she read the latest novel she'd picked up in town. It was another old one, incredibly old, yet new to her.

Her ears were folded back against her skull as to keep out the cold when she heard a whimper. Her ears snapped up, as did she- blankets falling from her shoulders leaving her to shiver in the bite of the chill.

She didn't even breathe. The only sound was the crackling of the fire and the gentle fall of ice and snow outside. But then it came again.

It sounded like a wounded puppy, and along with these new whimpers came the occasional 'thump' as if the poor creature were limping along and falling.

With this new development she jumped out of her nest. Her speed made her trip over the collection of blankets and she fell flat on her face, yet continued to scramble for the door.

She burst outside and looked in every direction, straining her ears for any inkling of a sound. She was already shaking standing in the swirling storm with little more than underpants on.

She caught sight of him.

The snow blurred her vision, but there was a visible wolf shaped lump on the ground. The wolf was incredibly small, almost hidden in the inches of snow on the ground, but she approached quickly. The poor thing was invariably freezing, and certainly hurt. As she gained ground, however, he changed. Suddenly the wolf took on a humanoid shape, and as she grew closer still she recognized who it was.

It was the small skeleton from the cliff side. The werewolf.
