"Everyone ready." He said standing up straight along with everyone else as they adjusted their weapons into their hands at the ready. "Lets go. Keep low, keep quiet and keep together." He looked at Rhys, "And you, I can't keep an eye on you at all time so stay with me and as close to me as possible. If you see something, say something, got it?"
"Got it." Rhys said straightening out his back and putting his hand out in a salute.
With just a nod to the group, they inched out of the forest and into the city. They stayed to buildings and alleyways as they went hoping to keep out of sight of anything that might halt their run. When they couldn't stay hidden between the buildings, they took to the cars.
They moved like military soldiers throughout the city. One or two members would go forward, scan the room and signal to the rest it was clear. After that, one will stay behind as the rest moved up to watch everything from the back. When everything was clear, the last person would catch up to everyone else.
They did that all the way until they got to a small building in the center of the city. The group had stopped across the main street just around the corner of a brick building. Bruce was at the front of the line with one more guy taking a knee in front of him while everyone else was in the same position as Bruce and keeping an eye out.
"See anything?" Bruce asked gun prompted up on his shoulders looking at everything to the right of the store.
The young man kneeling was scoping the left side of them, looking top to bottom at every place someone could possibly hiding. "Nope. All clear." He responded.
Their sight was set on the small building that was squished between a pawn shop and party rental shop. The building looked like one of the oldest buildings in the city and built in the 1950's with its dull pastel yellow concrete wall with the top looking like they put a shipping container on top and painted it a dull yellow to match. Hanging on top written in égyptienne font and in faded pastel red was Finley's Rexall Drugs. It had perfectly squared windows on both sides of a glass door. Stickers of TY and Neighborhood Pharmacy was plastered around the windows.
"Let's move." Bruce ordered. The young guy, taking the knee, hopped up and moved forward first. He ran across the street as quickly and quietly as he can, hid behind a tree and dropped to one knee. Once settled, he looked in quickly scanned the building before him. Once cleared, he signaled for Bruce to send the next one. They spread themselves out having a soldier at each corner while Bruce took up the front door. He peaked through one of the two big windows that were on both sides of the door, his hands cupped around his eyes to get a better view inside.
Nothing.
No movements. No noise.
Just the sunlight that spilled through the windows and onto the front of the store. The front half of the building had a clearing with just the white tiled flooring and to the left was a brown tiled bar counter with only a couple papers and a napkin dispenser on top. In front of the counter sat sea green bar stools on a brown tiled stepping. Behind the counter was wooden shelves filled with different variety of Coca-Cola bottles and soda fountains. More to the back the shelves went from soda bottles to vitamin bottles. The other half of the store goes from the white tiled flooring to green carpet with white shelves standing on top of it.
That was all Bruce could see. He could tell there was more to the store in the back but the light didn't reach back there and it was blocked by shelves. He moved to the glass door where there was gate pulled over it. Looking down at where the lock was, he narrowed his blue eyes at the lock. It looked untouched. No break in the chain or scratch on the lock to indicate someone tried and failed to get in.
Rhys stood by the door hopping on the front of his feet as he watched Bruce examine the chains. His small head looked to his right of him then behind him and to the left of him. He didn't see much except emptiness and the few cars that blocked most of his view.
This is so cool ! The voice said so excited in Reese's head.
Bruce took one arm out of his bag's strap and swung it forward. From there, Rhys watched as he pulled out a red handled bolt cutters and threw the backpack back onto his back. Bruce crouched down to the floor and leaned over the chain. With one hand he palmed the lock, the other he put the cutters between one of the chain before dropping the chain where it was and put both hands on the cutters handle.
"Wait ! " Rhys soft boyish voice erupted through the streets a little louder than he expected.
"What? " Bruce hissed at him in a whisper, "Keep it down, boy." Everyone quickly surveyed the area. "Hushed voice only." Bruce informed him.
Rhys quickly stepped back and put his head down, "Sorry." He whispered before lifting his head back up and his eyes widen, "Can I cut it?" His voice suddenly laced with excitement.
Bruce looked over the kid with his hands clamped together under his chin. A broad hopeful smile filled his face and plumped his cheeks out. Bruce sighed. He had to remember that this was the kids first time being out of the safety of the camp and in the dead center of the dangerous city. He wanted to feel like he was helping.
"Sure, kid." Bruce let out, his thin light pink lips curved up in a small smile. He held out the cutters to Rhys, who took them quickly and with his big smile repeated what Bruce did. Rhys looked up at Bruce before he pushed the bars together.
Nothing. The boy was using all the strength he got that he started his body started trembling. Rhys laughed to himself before he regripped the handles and tried again. Still nothing.
Bruce let out a chuckle, "Here let me help you with that." Bruce said as he move closer and gripped the end of the handles. " One." Bruce started counting. " Two... Three." With that they both pressed the handles together and the chain finally broke. " Don't worry, kid, when we get back we'll start training to buffin' you up." He laughed as he tapped the kid on his shoulders.
Rhys smiled and moved back to where he originally started, waiting to be given instructions.
Bruce slowly took off the chain with both hands making sure it didn't make enough noise to draw attention. He carefully set the chain down against the wall and started pulling up the gate. Surprisingly enough, the gate made little to no noise at all. He opened the door slightly enough to look in but not fully enough that if there was a trap it wouldn't set it off. He stood on his tippy toes hoping to get a better look over the shelves but still only saw an large opening to the back and nothing else. He looked around him for something small. Rhys looked around too.
"What are you looking for?" Rhys finally asked as he furrowed his eyebrows together and narrowed his eyes to the ground.
"Something to throw." Bruce whispered as he continued looking around. He could hear Rhys going through his own bag. "I can't see in the back and I don't want to risk going in without knowing if someone's in there."
"Does this work?" Rhys cocked his head to the side.
Bruce turned to face Rhys, who stretched his arm out to him with a baseball in his palm. "Yeah that works." He took the ball and cracked open the door a bit. When he had enough room, he through the ball as far as he could. The ball hitting the wall echoed throughout the store followed by it bouncing of the floor then began to roll until finally it could be heard hitting something. With that, everything went quite.
Bruce listened to the ball moving and listened afterwards to catch anything that might indicate danger. Rhys instinctively perked his ears up and tried listening too, just in case Bruce didn't catch anything. Rhys looked up at Bruce, looking for instructions, and Bruce happened to look back down at him still waiting.
Once he declared it was safe, he whistled - low and soft - to the scouts. When they heard the whistle, they all in unison made their way to the front of the door just as Bruce carefully opened the door more. When nothing happened, he stepped inside followed by his group members. All four of them lifted their guns and stood side by side with just a couple feet away from each other. And like they've done this a hundred times before, they walked forward together all the way to the back counter. They stopped once they hit the wooden counter that stretched wall to wall but had a little swinging door a little to the right from the center. Bruce looked at his people, nodded and they slowly made their way over the counter: Bruce used the door while the others sat on the counter and slide themselves across.
Behind the counter there was a white shelf that went from top to bottom but only covered the right half of the store, leaving the left side open. They moved to the empty space where they were able to see a door in the back left corner and more shelves to the right spaced out equally in a row that went to the back further. They moved forward two people taking the door and the other two went to clear the aisles. They had to be a hundred percent clear before they decide to let their guard down a bit.
