Chapter 1: Rhys
Author's Note ~ I just wanted to come on here and say first, Thank you so much for all of those who took their time to read this ! It means so much to me. Secondly, I know my book seems all over the place but I swear it will make more sense later on.
The green satisfyingly thin liquid was cold against her fingers as the older woman scooped some out and applied it to a wound on a young man's chest. She massaged it into the skin around the now scabbing wound, being careful not to rub so hard on the wound itself. When she was finished, she wiped her fingers off with a paper towel and put the white cap back onto the bottle. She put the back of her hand on the young man's forehead then moved to both cheeks keeping an eye out for any sign he's getting better or worse. His breathing was low but steady and his heart was normal. That was good.
Really good. She thought as she let out a sigh in relief and looking at the boy on the medical bed.
"What are you doing in here, Madi?" It was an older gentleman standing in the makeshift door way, his head almost hitting the top of it.
The woman - Madi - jumped a bit and twirled around to face the man.
" He's my son, Bruce." Madi said, her voice was filled with annoyance. " I'm allowed to see my son." She rolled her eyes at him and turned back to her son.
The medication on the boys chest glittered against the morning sun caught Bruce's eye. His eyes flickered to the table and to the plastic jar with the white cap on it.
"What's that?" He demanded his voice rising as he stride towards the table and snatched the jar up in his hand. He examined it: so small in his palm, clear and filled with green liquid. The white cap screwed tightly on top with a red bow wrapped around it. There was a cute chalk label on the jar that had instructions on it written in a cute unique hand writing. "Please tell me this is not what I think it is." He rolls his eyes and bangs the jar on the table.
"Then I won't." She said grabbing the jar and putting it in her pocket.
"You shouldn't trust those people, Madi." He almost yelled, "You don't know what they put in that!"
"I- " She was cut off by door opening again and slamming shut.
"What going on?" Another male voice interrupted. This one was a lot calmer and softer than Bruce's loud ruff voice.
"Doctor... " Bruce sighed, "Tell her she cannot be using poison from people we know nothing about." He pointed his hand towards her.
"Madi... " The doctor started.
"No listen to me." Madi interrupted, "I will do whatever it takes to help my boy. Anything!" Anger started to coat her voice. She took a deep breath before she got to heated. "It works, Doctor." She pulled the Doctor to her son, " Just look. In just two days, he stopped bleeding altogether and his wound is healing. I'm pretty sure he'll have a scar though." She quickly let out before anyone else tried to interrupt.
The doctor took a look over Madi with her big brown eyes filled with plea and determination. Her thin lips pulled squished together as if in thought and anticipation. He sighed after a while and looked closely at the wound. It was cleaned from any blood and glossy from whatever she put on it. There was no discoloration around it to signify that there's an infection or internal bleeding underneath. He put his hand to the boys chest and felt the slow thumping of his heart beat and the slow lungs filling up and cleanly going out.
"Two days?" The doctor stood up straight to ask and looked over the kid.
Madi nodded. "We've tried everything we can." Her voice quieter, "I just want my son to be okay and if that means trusting someone with his life then so be it because they haven't given me a reason not to."
The doctor sighed, "If this is the risk you want to take... " He shook his head, "and it seems to be working then go for it. "
A big smile crossed her face, "Thank you." With that gave Bruce a smirk on this lips and left the building.
"Seriously?" Bruce said in disbelief.
"We have more important matters to attend to, Bruce." The doctor replied, "Like the run."
Bruce sighed putting his tattooed hands up in surrender, "I told Ryhs he can't go without your permission first." He let out quickly. "But I do think he should go."
"Look-" The doctor started.
"He'll never be ready like you want him too." Bruce kept going, "He needs to get out there and see what it's like on runs."
"I know." The Doctor agreed.
"You can't keep sheltering him. He's gonna need to pull his weight around at some point." Bruce continued.
The doctor nodded, "I know."
"And we can't keep pushing it off." Bruce mouth kept moving faster than his brain and ears. "Wait? What?" He shook his head. "You agree?"
The doctor laughed and sighed at the same time as he nodded his head, "Yes, I agree. He's only getting older and he'll need to start pulling his weight and I think this run will be good for him."
"Well..." Bruce started unsure of what he should say. This was unusual for him and the doctor since he was never able to convince the doctor to let him take his son on a run ever. The doctor was to stubborn to break. "Ok. I guess. I'll start getting everyone ready then. Don't want to lose sun light with Rhys on board."
The doctor nodded slowly as Bruce was awkwardly leaving, waiting for the doctor to stop him and tell him he changed his mind.
Bruce was standing by the car watching the interaction between a dad and son. He almost expected the young doctor to change his mind when the two came walking up to him. His son looked a lot like him now that he thought about it. Both of them had black curly hair sitting at the top of their heads : the doctors was more neat and kept cut out of his face while a strand slipped into the boys eyes. The doctor kept his hands on his son's small shoulders.
"Bring him back, Bruce." The doctor finally spoke looking up from his son. He could hear the worry behind his almost calm voice. "I want him back unharmed."
Bruce nodded, "I will. You have my word."
The doctor kissed the top of Rhys's head and patted his shoulders, "Good luck, son." He whispered. "See you when you get back, okay?"
Rhys held a huge grin on his face that showed his perfect teeth as he looked up at his dad, "See you, Dad. " He said excitingly not knowing what he was getting himself into. "I'll make sure to bring you something if I can!" He yelled out as he ran to the back passenger door and hopped in.
As they pulled away, Rhys put the window down and threw his arm out of it, flinging it around as he waved bye to his dad.
Author Note - Ending with that, I also wanted to get your opinion so please let me know whether or not you mind the chapter cut in parts or if you rather have it in just one full long chapter. Definitely share you opinion in the comments and have a great day !!!
