The Consequences of Our Actions Part 1
It took a while for almost everyone to get in the room and we all sat nervously fidgeting in our chairs. I was having a hard time sitting still despite my whole body hurting every time I did. I could see the anxious energy coming from everyone. I kept a hold of Levi's hand making sure he was still doing okay. We aren't exactly sure what's going on with him, we just know something is going on. I'm not even sure when his powers are going to come back, last time it took a little while, but this time it could take all night maybe longer.
I watched as the anxious look on his face changed to confusion. He looked down at my hand and then back up to me. He just stared at me blankly as he blinked a little. He furrowed his brows and looked me up and down for a second. "You okay?" I asked, trying to figure out what was going on.
He just stared at me for a moment longer and shook his head slightly less as an answer to my question and more to snap himself out of whatever was happening. "Sorry, I think I was just spacing out a little," he mumbled. His eyes dropped back to the floor before he closed them.
"Are you sure that's all that was?" I asked leaning down to get a better look at his face.
"I don't know. I just forgot what I was doing for a second." I felt my chest tighten a little.
"Like earlier?"
"Sorta," he mumbled.
"Did you forget who I was?" I asked. I already knew the answer; the way he looked at me he looked like he didn't know me even if it was just for a moment.
He just brought his hand up to his face and rubbed at his eyes a little. "I- I don't know what's going on. I didn't know where I was, what I was doing, who anyone was, it was just for a moment, but I got so confused."
He didn't want to look at me. I think he thought I would be mad. I wasn't mad, I was scared. I have no idea what this means. He's not going to forget me, is he? No, now is not the time to panic about that, now is the time to comfort him. We will figure it out as we go.
I pulled his head close to my chest and he quickly wrapped his arms around me. "I'm right here baby, we are going to figure this out. I promise, okay?"
"Okay," he mumbled, his head buried in my chest. He was holding me so tight. He was scared. I don't blame him, this is terrifying.
The last few people came into the room and Pixis stood up to address everyone. After he explained what we were going to be talking about, and doing I could see everyone looking around the room. He told the people who weren't a part of the mission that they were going to be needed to help the rest of us for the next few days.
They all seemed to understand. I could tell what they were thinking by the looks on their faces. They were the lucky ones. They got to sit everything out only having to take care of everything after the mission was mostly over. Then again the rest of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. We decided to keep going. We knew there would be consequences, now it's time to face them.
Pixis started talking again and I tuned it out. He hasn't started talking about backlashes yet, and I was more focused on Levi. he was still clinging to me for dear life. I wanted to keep an eye on his face in case I noticed his expression change again.
"Alright let's get straight into it," Pixis announced. Whatever we are about to hear it won't be good, and that's if we can even figure out all of what's wrong. I know some things won't be as instant, they will take time to figure out. Jean was lucky and was able to figure his out right away, but we aren't even sure if anything else is wrong. Mine I'm sure is permanent, but the others aren't convinced. I'm not sure if it's hope or denial. Then again what really is the difference? In some cases, hope is just a more positive way of denying the inevitable.
"So has anyone noticed anything off, more than usual?" Pixis asked, waiting for hands to pop up.
Jean's hand was the first to shoot up. Pixis nodded at him to talk. "Well I already know about some permanent backlash," he said and I saw Pixis shake his head.
"Well we can't be sure that anything is permanent yet, we should still stay hopeful that it's not."
"Look I get your trying to stay positive, but believe me I know this is permanent," he said aggravated. "The last time my hands lost all feeling it was permanent, now I lost feeling up to my elbows, I think it's the same thing,"
I looked over at Jean who seemed a little more hot-headed than usual, I guess dealing with us all morning really drained him.
"I see," Pixis nodded, "I'm sorry about that."
"It's fine, nothing I'm not already used to," Jean shrugged it off, but I could still tell he was a little angry by the way he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms around his chest.
I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed cause Marco put a hand on his shoulder and raised an eyebrow at him. Jean just nodded and closed his eyes taking a deep breath to calm himself down.
I looked around the room as some more hands started to raise. I wanted to raise my hand but my arms were too sore too. I wasn't even worried about what I had noticed happening with myself, I was more concerned with what was happening with Levi.
"Well, I guess if Jean's permanent backlash his loss of feeling then mine might be permanent too," Connie said when Pixis called on him, "I can't feel my feet. I tried everything, but there is no feeling in them. I have full control over them, but just can't feel anything." He explained. "Also I tore a muscle in my left calf and that was painful but I don't think it's permanent. It hurt so bad when I woke up I jumped out of bed and my knees instantly buckled from the pain shooting up my legs," he said trying to laugh it off.
"Your knees buckled?" I asked, realizing that Levi had that same problem earlier.
"Yeah, but it was just the pain," he shrugged.
"It hasn't happened again?"
"Not that I've noticed," he shook his head.
"Alright, sorry, I was just making sure," I nodded letting them get back to talking.
Pixis called on Annie next. "Well, as you all know the crystals," she said pointing towards the new ones on her face and moving the neck hole of her shirt, and showing a few more by her shoulders. "But I've also noticed my arms and legs will stiffen up more at random times and they hurt to move around for a while. At first, I thought it was just because I was sore, but it happened even after the soreness started to go away. It's only happened a few times now, but it's never really happened before today."
The room went quiet and people raised their hands again. Pixis gave Hanji a nod. "Well, normally when I do scans of my own body I don't usually find anything, but this morning I could feel something was off so I did a check and I noticed my thyroid was working faster than normal."
"Everyone just stared at her for a moment waiting for her to explain. After a moment of silence she realized she had to talk more, "Well, it appears that I now have a hyperactive thyroid. It doesn't show any signs of going back to normal."
"What is that?" Erwin finally asked what we were all thinking.
"Well, a hyperactive thyroid leads to weight loss, as well as irregular heartbeat and-" she shook her head and cut herself off realizing we were all still sorta confused about what she was saying, "it's not important. I also noticed that I have a lower iron count in my blood cells."
"Hanji dumb it down please," Pixis asked finally.
"Iron deficiency anemia," she said plainly.
"Has any of that been actively affecting you?" Pixis asked genuinely.
"Well, I've been feeling a little more fatigued and my hands have been really cold since this morning. When I stood up out of bed I almost passed out because I was so light-headed." She listed off a few. One of those scared me. That's how I was feeling earlier. Do I have the same thing? I mean I felt light-headed, but I haven't felt any of the other things she mentioned.
Pixis called on Rico next. "Well, as some of you know I get permanent hard scaly patches on my skin. And yeah I have a few more," she said lifting her left hand and showed that her whole hand was pretty much covered.
"Can you still move it?" I asked before I could stop myself.
She quickly moved around her fingers to show us, "I have full control of my hand, I can still feel it, but yeah," she shrugged. "I've also noticed I've been coughing like I don't feel sick or anything, but I have a cough that I can't kick. Which is weird cause I never really get sick."
Levi started to squirm more and more in my arms. I let him go thinking he didn't want my arms around him anymore, but when he grabbed my arms and held them I got a little confused.
"I don't want you to let me go, my back is just hurting from sitting too long," he mumbled.
Pixis must have overheard him because he asked if everyone wanted to take a five-minute break to stretch. Everyone seemed to agree and we all stood up to walk around.
