Pins and Needles

As much as I knew I should sleep I just couldn't, I know Marco wasn't sleeping well either. We both kept fidgeting around. It wasn't until I had given up and just sat back up leaning against the wall when I finally noticed only about an hour had passed.

"Jean, you really need to get some sleep," Petra whispered to me as she was sitting near where we were all lying.

"I can't," I mumbled before looking over to Eren and Levi. It was hard to get their faces out of my head. They had so much blood on them before. What scared me more was the fact that the blood on their faces affected me more than the piles of bodies on the floors. What did that say about my humanity?

"You look like you're still in shock," Petra mumbled, waving a hand in front of my eyes. "You need the rest."

"It's bugging me," I finally mumbled out. She followed my gaze, seeing my eyes on Eren and Levi.

"What's bugging you?"

"We couldn't get all the dried blood off their face," I said before prying my eyes off of them and back to Petra.

"Oh hun," she said, pulling me into a hug. After a moment she let me go and gave me a comforting smile. "They're okay, I mean some water and a good scrub might do the trick," she said before looking around.

Marco sat up and grabbed my hand before pulling me over towards them. A part of me wanted to pull them close and not let go, and a part of me wanted to avert my eyes and get away. Every time I looked at their faces I just kept seeing their bloody faces staring back at me. It was a painful sight, one that I knew would stick with me for a while. I mean last time this happened it was in my nightmares for days before it stopped, even then the images never left my mind. This time it was so much worse. There was way more blood, and the look on their faces before they passed out I thought they were dying.

Marco sat us down right next to them and he pulled the plain black mask out of his pocket before pulling some water out of the pouch and pouring some on it. He looked at me and I pulled out my mask and he poured some water on it. He started wiping off Levi's face and I turned to Eren's. I looked down at him and froze for a moment. I took a deep breath before I started lightly wiping the blood away.

How can Marco do this? How can he look at them like this? It's too hard. It hurts too much. Earlier I thought we were all going to die. Seeing them like this it feels almost like they have. They look so lifeless and fragile.

"If you can't, don't worry I'll get them all cleaned up," Marco said, pressing his hand to my back. I didn't even notice that I had stopped moving and was just staring at Eren's face.

"No I can do it," I said, taking a deep breath and looking back down at him. At least I thought I could but the second I looked back down at his face I froze again.

Marco brought his hand over mine and moved it away from Eren's face. "Baby, it's okay you don't have to."

"But I want to help. I couldn't help before, but this I can do."

"If you want to help, then here," Marco said, moving over and moving Levi's head to lean on my lap. I froze for a moment and he looked up at me, "I need you to keep his hair out of his face for a minute," Marco said looking up at me. God, he knows me too well. He knows I can't do this. He knows even though I can't, I will still try. So instead of me feeling useless, he gave me something I can do.

I nodded and lightly pulled his hair back, being careful. He looked so fragile, they both did. After we finished cleaning up Levi's face we moved onto Eren. Before we did I took off my jacket and placed Levi's head on it gently making sure his head wasn't just laying on the hard floor.

Marco helped move Eren's head onto my lap and I moved his hair out of his eyes. I kept my eyes on Eren's face as Marco gently wiped off all the dried blood.

When his face was cleaned off I looked back up at Marco. "I'm sorry."

"Why?"

"I couldn't help," I mumbled. Once again I was just sitting here useless while he did all the work.

"But you did help, you kept their hair out of their faces so I could clean them up better."

He can say that all he wants but all I did was sit here. Just like when we were fighting, all I could do was sit back and watch as we almost died. I couldn't do anything. I could have lost everything tonight, my friends, my boyfriend, and I couldn't do anything. I'm useless.

"We need to get some rest now, I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we laid next to them?" Marco said, giving me a little smile looking down at Eren and Levi.

I didn't have any energy to argue. I just laid down next to Eren leaning his head on my arm so he wasn't lying with his head on the hard ground. I watched as Marco did the same for Levi. He passed me my Jacket back so I could lay my head on it. I laid my head down and looked back at Marco. That's when I noticed he had linked his hand with mine. I could see how desperately he was holding my hand. I'm stupid. I'm sitting here worried about myself and what I could have done, but Marco is laying just a few feet from me trying not to show how much he's hurting, but he is.

"Hun?" I said squeezing his hand back lightly, at least I hope it was light I didn't know exactly how hard I did it. It didn't look like I hurt him since his eyes came up to meet mine.

"I'm okay, I just need some sleep, so do you," he nodded. I knew I wasn't going to get anything else from him tonight. Maybe tomorrow we can talk more about it and I can try and help him.

I looked down at Eren's wrist braces and thought about taking them off. I mean he will be sore if he sleeps in them, but at the same time I feel like taking them off will be a bad idea. We aren't sure just yet what kind of damage has been done and I feel like taking them off would be a bad move. I left them alone and closed my eyes.

I don't know when I managed to fall asleep but I must have even though it didn't feel like it. The next thing I knew was that PIxis and Hassam were talking to Erwin. Apparently, the sun had started to rise and they were seeing if they could transport people out yet.

"I'll have to check and make sure it's safe," Pixis had said.

"Even so we will have to make several different portals. If everyone comes from one place then it's going to be obvious, but if they come from everywhere then it will be harder to track them down and draw too much attention," Hassam had said.

"We still have some wounded. I could drop them off near the hospitals," Erwin offered. Hanji and Franz healed as many people as they could, but they could only heal them so much. They healed them to the point that they could survive the injuries, but none of the wounded were fully healed; some were still in bad states and needed medical aid. Even so, I don't think Hanji or Franz could heal any more people if they tried.

I tried to sit up but my whole body ached. I couldn't tell if it was from laying on the floor or from using too much of my powers yesterday. I looked down at where Eren laid on my arm. I couldn't feel his head on my arm anymore. I'm not surprised my arm had fallen asleep with the angle I was laying at and the constant pressure on it from his head. The pins and needles I'm going to get from moving it is going to be a bitch and a half.

"Are you awake?" Marco asked with a quiet voice.

"Yeah, how long have you been up?" I asked.

"Just a few minutes. I think they are getting ready to send everyone back."

"Sounds like it."

"How are you? No backlash right?" I asked, looking him up and down. "Besides the aching in all of my body, and the pain in my leg from where the bullet grazed me, no. I think I'm okay."

Good, I know he didn't use his power as much as the rest of some of us, but he did use it quite a lot so I'm glad he's okay.

"What about you?" He asked.

"None that I can tell, I'm just really fucking sore."

"Your hands?" he asked, poking them.

"Still no feeling." Well, that hasn't changed. He still asks me that almost every morning. He moved his arm out from under Levi's head and replaced it with a blanket. It only took a moment before I heard him say anything. "Ouch son of a bitch."

I couldn't help but laugh a little. Marco doesn't swear all that often but when he does it's always a treat. "There a problem?"

"Pins and needles," he said, letting out a pained wince as he moved his arm forcing the blood flow back through it more.

"That's the reason I haven't moved yet. I know it's coming I'm just delaying the inevitable."

"Well, don't delay it too long, they might need our help," he said, looking like the stinging feeling in his arm was finally going away.

"Uh, you're right," I said before moving Eren's head onto my jacket and sitting up. I braced for it and ... nothing. I just stared at my arms a moment and... shit there it is.

"Fucking hell," I said as I felt my whole upper arm tingle.

"Moving helps," Marco laughed.

I shook out my shoulders and winced as it only got worse. "You're a damn liar."

"I swear it does, it might feel more painful but it makes it end quicker," he shrugged. I waited a minute for the pain to stop and let out a breath. God those are always the worst. "Alright, let's see where we can help," Marco said, placing his hand on my forearm so I would be able to feel it. One small problem... I didn't.
