Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

We all had a hard time pulling our eyes away from Gunther's body. We needed to find a way to keep moving forward, but the longer we stay here the more dread starts to set in.

I watched as Hani walked over to his body. Pixis looked like he was going to tell her to stop. He reached an arm out for her but his voice caught in his throat and he let his arm quietly fall back to his side. She kneeled down next to his body and touched the ground next to it. I watched as a bunch of vines wrapped around him with flowers decorating his body.

"I know we can't do a proper burial like he deserves, but I couldn't just leave him like that," she said standing back up. Nanaba walked over and gave her a hug thanking her for doing that.

It was a lot harder trying to come up with a plan when we were trying to watch every direction. It was a lot harder because we couldn't even see where most of the snipers were. We were blind in that aspect. The only reason we knew there was more than one was that when Levi was reading people's minds they kept thinking of snipers plural.

Quinn and Alastair's teams were waiting on our word to move. They were having a hard enough time barricading themselves in. They needed our help before they could help us disarm a majority of the guards around them. The few people on their team who could disarm them from a distance were having trouble using their powers through the barricades.

We need to find a way to let Sasha's doubles out. Mikasa can only do so much by herself. I mean I'm sure she could disarm everyone if she tried, but that would take too long.

"I have an idea," Levi said, pointing to Annie.

"Alright let's hear it," I nodded, waiting for him to continue.

"We can make a hole in the barricade and have Annie stand and block the hole. She can't get hurt by bullets when her skin is crystallized and she can block people behind her by having the crystal stick off her body. Then we have Sasha's doubles rush through the hole they can't get hurt by bullets either so everyone going out will be safe. We just have to make sure no one else is on the side where Sasha is sneaking out. Annie can go after and we will close the hole behind them."

"Alright, sounds like a plan," I said before turning towards Annie and Sasha, "you heard him?" I asked not sure if we had to repeat it.

"I'm going out too," Connie said and I shook my head.

"Not this time. Give yourself a little break," I said back. I was more worried about losing another person which is why we only sent out people who can't get hurt.

"Already on it," Annie said, walking over to the far left side of the barricade and crystallizing her skin. Sasha got her doubles ready and we watched as they opened the barricade for a moment while they all ran charging out.

I was looking around as Annie left and we closed back up the barricade for the moment seeing if anyone else could help from back here or out there. That's when I noticed Connie was gone.

"Can you hear his thoughts at all?" I asked, whispering to Levi.

"No," he said looking around. "Shit did he run out there?"

"He must have." Son of a bitch we told him not to. He's gonna get himself killed.

"Have more faith in him," Levi said, putting his hand on my shoulder. I could tell he was worried too by how hard his grip on my shoulder was.

"I have an idea," Rico said, looking me dead in the eyes with determination. This is either going to be really good or really bad.

"Pull everyone back in," she said and I narrowed my eyes for a moment. "The doubles can stay, but I don't think they will be needed after this."

"Explain," I said, crossing my arms waiting to hear her out. "Please tell me this isn't just a half-assed plan for revenge?"

"Well, it's no surprise I want revenge, but I think that it will also give mostly everyone a bit of a break from using their powers for a moment, meaning we have a better chance in the long run."

"Alright, I'll hear it out."

"Well, I want these fuckers dead so stripping them of their weapons is just a wasted effort at this point. I know you didn't want me to go out there and get shot, but what if they don't even know I'm out there?"

"Hitch," I said, seeing where she was going with this.

"Exactly, while Annie and Connie are coming back in, I can slip out, and Mikasa can walk away from them and stand closer to the barricades. I can gas all these fuckers. Kill them all where they stand before they even know they are dead."

"And the snipers?" I asked, knowing Hitch's illusions won't reach them.

She went silent. I guess she forgot about that part. "It's a good plan, aside from the fact that you would be killed the second you walk out of the barricade," I said before turning around and starting to head towards the others to try and think of another idea when Levi grabbed my arm.

"I think there is a way this could work," he mumbled. His eyes drifted over to Jean who was watching Sasha, Annie, Mikasa, and Connie disarm and fight people. "He can use his steam and make it nearly impossible for the snipers to see anything, when the smoke clears, bam everyone's dead and we are on the move again."

"See that will work," Rico said with a smile. Her face dropped again as she looked at the sky, how do we kill the snipers though?"

"We will worry about that later," I said knowing it was best to focus on one thing at a time.

"But they are the ones who should really pay for Gunther's death, I mean they are the ones that shot him."

"I know, but right now we can't focus on them. We have no way of getting them at the moment, we have to focus on what we can do. We can't lose sight of the mission.

She let out a sigh and nodded, "you're right."

I gave Mikasa a signal to bring everyone back in. Annie and Connie returned back to the barricade and I smacked Connie upside the head the second he came back in.

"Ow, what was that for?" he asked.

"For going even though we told you not to," I said, glaring him down. "You asked and we told you no remember?"

"I mean I never asked if I could, I told you I was going. It wasn't a question, it was a statement."

He's really testing his luck right now. I should smack him upside the head again, but I just rolled my eyes and turned towards Jean calling him over.

"You better stay put this time unless you want your lungs liquified," Rico said.

"Don't even think about it," Levi said and I turned back around to see what they were arguing about.

"I'm not going to be threatened to stay back when I can help," Connie glared at us.

"It wasn't a threat, it was a warning," Rico said looking at him with a serious face, "I'm the only one going out there. I'm going to kill them all and if you go, you will die."

"Oh," Connie's voice got really quiet. I think he finally realized that we weren't trying to threaten him, we were genuinely trying to protect him from dying in whatever horrible way Rico was planning on killing everyone. I turned back around once that issue was resolved and went over to Jean to ask him if he could start making a ton of steam.

"I can do that," he nodded, "we need cover?"

"Rico needs cover, she's going in."

"Is she finally going to kill them all?" He asked as a joke but when he saw that I wasn't laughing he stopped laughing instantly. "Oh," he mumbled. "So cover," he said, changing the subject as he turned his head away and started making a ton of steam.

"I'll keep making it until you tell me to stop."

I nodded and headed towards Hitch letting her know the plan. She waited until there was enough steam around so that we could safely move a tiny part of the barrier so Rico could get out. She put her illusion on Rico and the corner of the barrier that she was sneaking out of. Once Rico was out we closed the barrier back. Mikasa had walked over leaning against the front of the barrier as we waited for Rico to come back.

We couldn't see anything, but the horrendous coughing we were hearing as well as several thumping noises which I could only assume were their bodies hitting the floor told me that Rico had gotten straight to work.

"Only we can hear that," Hitch said, looking at me.

"What?"

"Well as part of the illusion I didn't want them to hear her footsteps so I only have the sounds you would normally hear to add to the illusion. They have no idea that their team is being wiped out," she mumbled before looking down. I could tell she was feeling a little guilty about doing this, but that guilt was something we would have to deal with later.

This went on for what felt like an eternity, even though it had probably only been a few minutes. When Rico returned she had some blood splatter on her clothes.

I wanted to ask about it, but at the same time, I thought I was better off not knowing. Levi on the other hand seemed to already know. He leaned over and whispered in my ear. "She didn't stab anyone or anything like that. They were coughing up blood and I guess some got on her."

Earlier when she said the gas would liquify their lungs, I thought she was joking, I guess that was my mistake. God, what a horrible way to go. I felt a little unease about this whole situation. I was sick to my stomach but pushed all of that away.

"It's time for us to move again," she said her eyes were cold as she stared past me rather than looking at me.

"Alright," I said with a shaky voice. I told Jean he could top with the steam and we started walking. It would take a moment for all the steam to clear away.

We started moving, following closely behind Mikasa. We had to keep stepping over bodies. We told everyone to keep their eyes dead ahead and to not look down. I knew none of us should look back on the scene and despite telling everyone to keep looking forward I went against my better judgment as I glanced behind us when I knew the steam had cleared. It was a bloody massacre. There was nothing but bodies, most had blood coming out of their nose, mouths, and eyes. Some were laying over others and in the center of all the carnage was a single body encased in flowers.

The snipers on the rooftops must have had quite the shock when the steam finally cleared away. The scene we left sure sends quite the message.
