Grown Children
After the meeting, I marched straight to Pixis's office before he was even in there. Levi hesitantly followed me in. I walked in and plopped down in the chair crossing my arms and staring at the chair across from me waiting for Pixis to make his way in here. He was still talking with a few people who hung back. I knew he would come back here after and I already know he's expecting me to be here.
"Of course he knows you're in here," Levi rolled his eyes sitting down next to me. "You're a stubborn son of a bitch."
"Thanks, babe," I said, pretending to be offended.
"Hey I'm not saying that's always a bad thing, I'm just saying when you set your mind to do something it's a pain in the ass to stop you," he patted his lap and I wasted no time kicking my feet up and resting them on his legs.
"You sure this isn't going to bother your knees?" I asked, remembering what he had said in the meeting earlier.
"I'm sure," he said, putting his hands on my shins probably so I would keep them there.
"Speaking of, why didn't you tell me before?"
"Same reason you didn't tell me about your wrists?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
I just stared at him for a second. I mean I didn't know if it was actually backlash before he brought it up. Oh, I see his point now. "That's fair."
"Took you a second," he laughed.
"Someone's feeling better today."
"Because I'm sassing you?"
"Yup."
"No but seriously, how're your legs feeling? You sure it's okay for me to keep my legs like this?"
"I'm sure Eren if it hurt I would say something."
"Liar."
"Guess you'll never know," he shrugged and leaned back in the chair. I wanted to push it a little more and keep asking, but I know he won't tell me regardless. I just turned back to face Pixis's empty chair waiting.
After a few minutes a voice broke the silence, "Sorry for taking so long," Pixis said walking in behind us, "I'm assuming you want to start mission planning now?"
"Yes." He took a seat and gave me a nod to start spitballing any ideas.
"Well, what exactly are you waiting for? I know you are waiting for an opportunity where we are a little less outgunned, and outmanned, but what else? Anything specific?"
"I guess," Pixis sat back and thought for a moment, "I just want to wait for a moment where I feel like either we are ready enough to take on that many people, or an opportunity where everyone feels like we can make it through in one piece. Whether that be some troops pulling out, or some miracle on our end," he shrugged. "Honestly I'm not quite sure."
"You're not giving me much to work with. A miracle? That's what you want? Right, let's just hit up Jesus I'm sure he could hook us up. Actually, now that I remember it I think he owes you a favor isn't that right Levi?"
"Don't drag me into this," he rolled his eyes. "I'm just here for moral support, but if you're going to be a sarcastic asshole I'll just call Jean in here instead he can help more with that than I can."
First off you know damn well you are just as much of a sarcastic asshole, I thought to him.
"Look, it's not like we had much to work with in the first place. All I'm saying is that I don't want everyone to get killed before the mission even has a chance to start."
"But you have to face the facts, this is war. People die," I said, throwing his own words back at him. "Why do our lives matter more than the people who are fighting for us?"
"Eren, that's not what I'm saying. All I'm saying is that if we want to save their lives we have to live until the actual mission."
"No, what you're saying is you want to live in a fantasy world where no one dies and everyone walks away happy. We both know that's not going to happen."
"That's not at all what I'm saying," he let out a frustrated sigh, "look I know what's going to happen and it's going to happen whether we go on this mission now or later. People are going to die, and there will be nothing we can do to stop it. However, what I want is the best chance of survival. That's the difference. If we do it now I'm sure most if not all of us will die. If we do it later we have a better chance of some of us living to the end of the fight. We are way out of our league with this one don't you see that. Thinking you can just go into any fight and win? Who's really living in a fantasy world here?"
"Who said I expected to win the fight?"
"Oh so go in save everyone and die the hero is that it?"
"Knock it off you two. Bitching at each other about this isn't going to solve anything. Yes, Eren going in this early is stupid and you would surely die within minutes if not seconds of even trying.-"
"Hey-."
"And yes, Pixis waiting for a miracle is also stupid. There is no grand miracle coming to save the day. That is why we are sitting here, to come up with a plan that won't get us all killed instantly," he said glaring at me, "and for a timing that isn't at best several years down the road," he said glaring at Pixis. "Now if you could both be civil adults I could stop mediating you like you're children and we can get to some actual fucking planning.
The silence in the room lingered for a moment as we sat back and recomposed ourselves. "All I'm asking is that maybe we hold off on making a definite plan right this second. We can brainstorm, but the plan is probably going to change depending on when we chose to do this."
I was about to speak up when Levi spoke first probably on purpose to cut me off. "How long do you need until you are ready to make a definite plan?"
"A week is all I'm asking for, Actually two weeks that's it."
"Why two?" I asked. I mean fine I get it a week so everyone can recharge and have time to learn the extent of their backlash, but why two weeks?
"One week for everyone to rest, and at least one to gather information that can help us plan all this out. Maybe give it time to cool down out there."
"That sounds reasonable to me," Levi said before looking at me, "Is that okay with you?" he asked. I figured if I disagreed he would make me explain why and I didn't have any reason aside from the fact that people are sitting in cells, people are dying, but we already know this.
I took a deep breath and nodded, "yeah, fine," I sighed.
"Alright it's settled," Levi nodded lightly tapping my legs so I knew to put them down. "Now was that so hard?" he asked in a more condescending manner before standing up. "I swear if I didn't come in here for "moral support" you guys would never get any work done, you would just always be at each other's throats." he walked out of the room and I got up to follow. Is that the reason he always comes in with me? I just figured he wanted to help out with planning. Though it would make sense, Pixis and I bump heads quite often especially when it comes to mission plans.
I followed him back to our room and watched as he collapsed back on the bed. "You two were exhausting," he said, not even bothering to open his eyes and look at me. I couldn't tell if he was just annoyed with me or if his powers were giving him a headache.
"Do you need some time alone?" I asked, deciding that either way he might agree whether it be to just get me out of the room, or because he actually needed a moment to recharge.
"Yes please, and it's not because I'm annoyed with you," he said, opening his eyes and looking at me with a sincere smile to clarify, "well maybe a little," he said rolling his eyes, "but mostly because of the headache."
"Alright, how long do you need?"
"Maybe just like an hour or so, if I haven't come to find you before then it's because I took a nap and you can come back in the room."
"Okay, I'll go bug Jean and Marco."
"Have fun, don't get a fireball to the face."
"No promises," I laughed before heading out of the room.
