Don't Trust Them

I woke up and saw Levi sitting up. My head was in his lap and I looked up to see him staring off in a daydream his hand was mindlessly playing with my hair.

"Good morning," I said, bringing my hand up to rub at my eyes.

"Good morning," he said back, snapping out of whatever daydream he was in and looking down at me with a soft smile.

"The press conference is today," I mumbled sitting up. Even though it had been a few days since our talk with Pixis I wondered if he had come up with an alternative plan to try and pitch to me. He has yet to bring anything back up and I can't help but think he's either stalling for more time or just hoping I've forgotten about it.

"He could already have a plan," Levi spoke up, "maybe he's just trying to see how today goes."

"Maybe."

I got up and started to get ready. It was still a bit weird to be dressed in normal clothes. We headed out to the front room with the same group of people. We had decided to keep pretty much the same plan. We kept the same groups and changed the clothes so we didn't look too similar to how we looked last time. While in the room Nanaba walked around us for a moment and shook her head.

She pulled out some clothes from her bag and started to help others change a little more. She walked over to me and put a beanie on me fixing my hair a little so that it was sorta covering my eyes. She walked over to Levi giving him a pair of reading glasses and held up some hair gel asking if it was okay before just putting some in his hair. He agreed and she slicked his hair back giving it a completely different style.

She then moved on to Pixis and gave him a wig and a hat. She walked over to Christa and helped her restyle her hair as well as changing a few other details. "There we go. Now you won't look too similar," we all just gave a shrug hoping she was right.

Our plan was about the same with a few details changed. We had to be more careful this time. We knew that some of the same guards might be there and if they notice us being suspicious they might recognize us.

We had to figure out a different plan to get the woman to talk to Christa to wipe her memories and to stop her from talking. Last time it was way too reckless of her just storming in there and waltzing straight through the guards' area. This time we planned to have Hitch help out a little.

It was still risky and might not work but we thought it was better than having Christa storm in again.

We all waited for Erwin to teleport us out again. We also had a few people stay back since this worked well enough last time. We hoped things would go smoothly but last time some members of the group just kinda stood around and we figured we didn't need to waste their time and threaten their safety for no reason. Connie and Nanaba stayed behind. Annie, Marlowe, and Mina were still in a group, but this time our groups were a little different. Hitch, Pixis, and Erwin were grouped together. Which actually looked believable Hitch looked like she was with her dad and his friend if you didn't know them it could easily pass like that.

Our group remained the same Levi, Eld, Christa, and myself. Once again Christa and I were told we should keep up the dating act. Especially since we thought there might be some of the same guards there. So if Christa switched to pretending to date Levi then it might be a little more noticeable.

We could be overthinking all of this but we didn't want to leave anything up to chance. We had Erwin drop us quite a bit away. This conference was held at a different location so the layout would definitely be different. After we were portaled out we headed in separate directions. Everything felt different from the last time we were out. There were a heavier guard presence and a lot more guns. I felt eyes on all of us as we walked making sure to keep our eyes away from theirs. The last thing we needed was for them to feel threatened and start pointing those guns at us.

I could hear sirens in the distance and some of the buildings near us had their windows boarded up and there was broken glass in the streets and sidewalks. The air was dense and smelled like smoke and chemicals. I knew they said riots were happening, but I didn't think it would be to this extent.

"Where are you heading?" a man said approaching us. His hand on his gun and his tone holding a layer of suspicion.

"We are looking for the press conference," Christa said quietly.

"We heard it was at the courthouse, but we seem to have gotten turned around," she said rubbing her neck flashing them an embarrassed smile.

"You don't know where the courthouse is?" he asked even more suspicion in his tone.

"We are from a few cities over, we don't come here as often, but we were told to go to the conference to get some notes for our publisher," Levi said cutting in.

"Publisher?" The man asked.

"We work for News Now," he said before asking if it was okay to reach into his bag and pull out his press pass. Levi what the fuck are you doing we don't have a press pass. I tried to keep my cool wondering how he was going to pull this off. He pulled out a...press pass... how did he... wait a minute. I looked up and saw from around the corner Hitch who gave me a wink before vanishing. Thank god for her illusions or we would be toast right now.

"I see," he nodded before giving us directions. Right as he was about to turn around to head back to his post he paused. "How did you guys get here?"

"We took a taxi, they said they couldn't take us the whole way because of the riots and debris," he answered without a second thought.

"Alright, have a good day," he turned around and let us keep walking. God, it's times like these that I'm glad I didn't get Levi's powers. Having to hide this anxious feeling would be impossible.

We kept walking and headed straight to the check-in. The other group not far behind us. When we got up to the check-in they quickly glanced over the ID's and Hitch's illusions came in clutch again. Christa didn't even have to manipulate them this time. We headed straight in and waited. We made sure Hitch, Pixis, and Erwin were within sight. I pulled the phone out and was ready to send Annie's group the text in advance.

The woman walked out and Eld silently took a breath before taking control. "Good evening all," she said with a kind smile which was instantly struck down as Eld took hold. "As you all have heard there have been riots starting and I wanted to address that before I go forward with the rest of my speech." This time the script that we had planned out started out a lot smoother hoping to get more across before the speaker gets ripped away from the podium. It sounded like a normal briefing and didn't raise any eyebrows that is until she continued.

"These riots that have been popping up were caused by a press conference that happened with a former associate of mine. I wanted to take a moment to address some of the things he was saying. You might think I'm here to condemn his actions or turn a blind eye to what he was saying, but I won't." Oh, no people are already catching on. Eld has to hurry.

"After hearing him speak I did some research of my own for once and realized he was right. People have been going missing and I'm not talking about just the cursed and exiles anymore, but now everyday civilians are getting picked up off the streets all because they are mentioning the truth. They are standing against corruption, against the government. The government doesn't like what it can't control. "

We didn't have much time; we could already see the men coming out from backstage to grab her and pull her away. "You mustn't trust the government, they aren't here to protect you, they just merely want control. They are going to silence me like they silenced my friend haven't you noticed that after he was forced to resign he went missing? They will make me resign and then you will never see me again. Don't let my act of defiance against them be in vain." A hand was put over her mouth as she was dragged off stage. Both Christa and Hitch had snuck off and already started heading towards the back. I had sent the text to Annie's group the second I saw the men walk on the stage. The rest is up to them.

Mina takes control of the woman just until Christa can get to her. Hitch will have an illusion over Christa and herself. They will look like guards until they get backstage and then Hitch will make them invisible to the naked eye. Christa will then tell the woman to forget being possessed and that she believes everything she said and then they will meet us back here. All while they are gone there are illusions of them next to our respective groups.

When they came back we decided to get the hell out of there. Luckily for us, they hadn't learned their lesson and they were live broadcasting it again. They hadn't been for some of them but when they decided that it must have been a one-time thing they went back to the live broadcasting. We waited until three had been live broadcasted without any interruptions before deciding to take charge on this one.

We had to make sure it was live broadcasted because at this point we know they are getting desperate to regain control of their civilians. If they weren't live broadcasting this then I truly believe they would have slaughtered everyone in the conference to keep the truth from getting out.

They decided against holding everyone again just letting everyone leave after someone else came out to apologize about her "psychotic breakdown." We made sure to walk far away before deciding to teleport out. With all the guards around it was hard to find a place where there wasn't anyone. Even in back alleys, guards were patrolling. We ended up dipping into an empty parking garage squatting down behind a car and portaling through the floor back to base.

Everyone was relieved to see us back without a scratch from another successful mission. "Now what?" Auruo asked.

"Now we wait," Pixis answered dismissing everyone.
