Don't Screw This Up
I sat back feeling a bit anxious as Pixis told everyone that we were going to start with introducing ourselves, our names, our ages, our code names, if we have one, and our powers for those who have them. I couldn't tell if I wanted to run out of the room or just freeze where I am and hope I manage to tap into Armin's invisibility powers.
Levi's hand gave mine a squeeze under the table and when I looked at him he gave me a tiny nod. I know everything will be fine, but a part of me feels like I'm going to screw everything up. Like everyone is going to hate me or not trust our team to lead them in and pull back their help and resources.
"Everything will be fine hun," Quinn's voice came out as a forced hoarse whisper as she gave me a pat on the back.
"I could start off unless someone else wants to?" Pixis volunteered not knowing if anyone was comfortable sharing right away. When he didn't get a response he decided to just start off. He stood up and looked around, clearing his throat.
"I'm Pixis. I'm 38. My code name is The Protector, and I can make force fields," he said, giving a little demonstration of his power. Oh god was I going to have to do that too? My powers are emotion-based and that's not normally an issue but with this much anxiety going through me I'm not too sure anymore.
"You don't have to if you don't want to," Quinn said again.
I am so sorry I thought of you as scary at first, you're so nice. I thought back and caught a smile that appeared on her face.
Shadis was next, he stood up and looked around. "My name is Shadis. I'm 36. My code name is agony, and I can inflict pain on anyone by just looking at them. I will not be giving a demonstration," he said before sitting down.
"That's probably for the best," Nanaba said with a little smile on her face. "I'll go next," she said standing up, "hello, I'm Nanaba. I'm 39. My codename is The Shifter, and I can shapeshift," she said before taking a deep breath and changing herself to look like Alastair.
"Well don't you look handsome," Alastair said laughing to himself. Nanaba just rolled her eyes and quickly changed back to her normal appearance.
"Can I go next?" Hassam asked.
"Of course," Nanaba said sitting down. Hassam stood up and looked around awkwardly.
He flashed a friendly smile, "I'm Hassam, I'm 28 years old. I don't have a code name or a power, I'm just a journalist who thinks everyone should be equal." He sat back down and I could tell a few people seemed more relieved after hearing him say that.
I saw out of the corner of my eye Quinn staring daggers into the man sitting next to Auruo, the one that she had walked in with. I couldn't tell what he was thinking by the look on his face, but if Quinn looked at him like that then it probably wasn't a good thought. I looked to Levi to see if he was looking at him too and sure enough Levi didn't seem too happy with his thoughts either. He wasn't death glaring at the guy but he looked just as frustrated now.
The man didn't even seem to notice that these two were staring at him; he just seemed to be staring at the table in front of him, every once in a while his eyes would look over at the Hassam and the people sitting next to him.
Auruo went next, "I'm Auruo. I'm 30, My codename is The Linguist, and my power is that I can understand every language."
"That's such a cool power," Amalia said before quickly covering her mouth.
"Thank you," Auruo said with a nice smile, "would you like to have a go?"
Panic flashed behind her eyes for a moment, but she gave a hesitant nod before slowly standing up, "I'm Amalia. I- I'm 24," she said her voice was quiet. She sat down after that without saying another word. She seems just as nervous as I feel. I was right she was around our age.
"I can go," the guy sitting next to her offered after giving her a pat on the back. I think he noticed how awkward she was. He stood up and looked around. He looked drained, but he held his head high. "I'm Santos, and I'm 52. Don't have a code name or powers, I just want to see the world go back to normal," he said before plopping back down with a nod.
"His wife has powers," Levi whispered in my ear. That makes sense. Why he looks so exhausted, why he just wants things to go back to normal, why he has that look of determination in his eyes.
"The guy on the other side of Hassam stood up and started introducing himself. "I'm Jerich, I just turned 30. I don't have any powers or codenames, I always knew the world was corrupt, but what's been happening, it was finally my limit, enough is enough. I'm ready to fight to see the world become a better place, no matter what." He sat back down and took a deep breath. Even without Levi's powers, I could tell he genuinely meant it.
The room fell silent and I was waiting to see who would volunteer next, but a minute went by and no one did. I was about to stand up when Alastair finally let out a sigh. "Well if no one else is going to go I guess I will," he said standing up.
"What's up I'm Alastair, I'm 38. My codename is Dark Angel, given to me by this beauty right here," he said pointing to Quinn who just rolled her eyes. His voice was honeyed and smoky. " My powers, well," he said before pausing for a minute. He pulled off his hoodie to reveal a tank top underneath. It had low-cut sleeves that went so far down I could see his hips. God this guy was ripped. I waited for Levi to nudge me but when I looked at him he was staring too. Glad to see I'm not alone. I can see what Quinn sees in him.
"Hey," she whispered.
The next thing I saw was a huge pair of wings pop out of his back out of the side of his tank top. They were jet black and massive. "As you can see I can manifest wings, they are also bulletproof. I figured that out quite recently. The wings disappeared and he tied his hoodie around his waist as he continued talking. "I can also manipulate the mass, density, and weight of objects," he said, reaching a hand out to Quinn.
She rolled her eyes but pulled a knife out of her boot and handed it to him. He thanked her before holding up the knife and shrinking it until it was the size of a penny. He dropped it on the table with a smirk and I watched as the table we had constructed out of concrete had chipped and cracked where he dropped it. He picked it back up and made it bigger than before. It almost looked like a sword now. He bounced it off his hand and it floated back down in his hands gently as if it were a feather. He shrunk it back to its normal size and handed it back to Quinn who despite giving him a roll of her eyes she had an amused smile.
He looked around at the amusement on everyone's faces and gave a playful bow, "thank you, thank you very much," he said before sitting down kicking his feet back up on the table.
It was hard to follow that up. I was going to try and go after him, but now I can't bring myself to do that. Luckily it doesn't seem I have to because someone else stood up. "I'm Leroy, I'm 42. My code name is Gamma. I can create Energy blasts," he said, showing us an example creating a small one in his hand. It looked like a translucent light that swirled around itself. He closed his hand causing it to disappear. "I can also heal people," he said before sitting back down.
He can heal, like Hanji. That's amazing. We found another healer and another mind reader. Levi just gave me a smile. I guess I got a little too excited about this, but I thought it was really cool. Now Hanji won't be struggling to try and heal everyone by herself, well with Franz's help, but he can only do so much with his power timing out on him.
One of the ladies next to Auruo stood up. "I'm Seraphina," I couldn't help but be shocked. I didn't expect her voice to sound like that. It was gravelly and low but she held no emotions while she spoke her tone was just flat. I couldn't help but feel like I was listening to a corpse talk. She held no emotions in her tone or face at all. Her eyes looked as if they were dead. "I'm 26, my code name is Havoc. I can induce temporary paralysis, and I can manipulate blood. Usually my own, but with enough focus, I can manipulate someone else's." She sat back down and I felt a shiver run down my spine. That sounds absolutely terrifying. I can't tell if the feeling of my blood running cold was from fear or from her manipulating it.
"It's from fear," Levi said whispering in my ear. Well, that's good to know.
The lady next to Seraphina stood up, "I'm Zahra," she said, keeping her eyes down at the table. "I'm 28 years of age. My codename is Toss-Up. I can read auras of people, places, and certain objects. I can also manipulate the probability of outcomes. I can see patterns and possibilities of certain things to make the desired outcome more probable. I also have a probability estimate on every outcome, it's not always guaranteed to work, but it definitely can greatly increase certain odds." She took a seat and I could tell I wasn't the only one confused about how it works. Her voice sounded monotonous as she spoke quickly.
"I'm sorry to ask but do you mind giving us an example dearie? We aren't quite sure what that means," Quinn asked nicely. I'm sure she knew what it meant cause Levi also seemed to follow along, but the rest of us were left high and dry.
Zahra looked up from the table for the first time tonight and she looked at me. I felt my blood run cold. "There is a 39% success rate on your next mission with the team you have planned, but if we added Alastair and Quinn your odds jump up to 86%."
We all looked around the room at each other. Only 39%? I thought our team was solid. How does she know this? I mean I get it's her power but I don't understand how this works.
"Can you give us an easier example to follow?" Quinn asked again.
She paused for a moment to think before calmly standing back up. "Well," she paused again trying to get her example straight. "If I left a notebook here on the table the probability the pages would move because of a draft would be 1% If I go and open a window a few hallways down the probability would be 3%. However, if I put a fan in this room the probability jumps up to 93%. It's like that but the patterns are more abstract. By adding things or taking things away I can see how the patterns change and the probability number shows on the object."
I think I understand now, but damn that hurts my brain to think about. "Thank you for explaining dearie," Quinn said before glancing at me. Was she asking just so I understood?
"Not just you, but kinda," Quinn mumbled under her breath.
The room fell silent and I felt Quinn poke my arm lightly, "You should go, Levi and I are trying to wait until after grumpy pants over there goes. We don't know how he will react to us being mind readers."
I felt my whole body freeze. "You got this babe," Levi whispered, giving my hand a squeeze before letting it go.
Quinn gave me a pat on the back and she flashed me a big smile, "You got this," she tried to whisper out.
I forced myself to my feet, my whole body screaming at me to stay put. "Hi," I said with an awkward wave. Shit, what am I supposed to say? Hi. Hi. That's what I started with. I'm such an idiot.
I heard Levi clear his throat behind me and I snapped back to reality for a second. "I'm Eren, I said, forcing myself to continue, though my thoughts were nonsense and my brain was having trouble making sentences. "I'm 22, and My codename is Orbit," I said before taking a deep breath. "My power is- is, um," I started to freeze up when I took another deep breath. I couldn't get the words out so I just closed my eyes for a moment and tried to take a quick second to calm my emotions. I think Levi realized what I was doing and helped me by pushing a calm emotion on me.
I opened my eyes feeling a lot better. Only a few seconds had passed but I instantly felt better, "Well why don't I show you," I said putting a smile on my face. I flipped the gravity on myself and stood on the ceiling. I watched as everyone's faces lit up. "I can manipulate gravity on myself, others, and even make gravity fields," I said and I looked around the room. I felt the last bit of confidence leave my body when I saw Quinn's face. She was no longer smiling at me. Instead, she looked at me like I had slapped her across the face. She looked so hurt. I watched her turn her head away from me. Alastair put a hand on her shoulder and I could see him whispering something to her but couldn't tell what they were saying.
I just set myself back on the ground and sat down without another word. "What happened?" I asked Levi.
"It's not my place," was the only thing Levi said before grabbing my hand back under the table. Great, I did screw something up. I don't even know what I did.
I felt a pat on my back and turned back around to Quinn who just gave me a sad smile before whispering, "You didn't do anything wrong." Before I could ask her what happened the man next to Auruo finally stood up.
"Um, I guess it's my turn," he said after realizing no one else had stood up in a minute. "I'm Xander, I'm 62, old I know." He grumbled out, "My codename is Sigil. My powers are hyper-awareness," he said before looking up at Quinn and Levi. I guess that means he did see them glaring at him, and he probably heard some of our conversations. "I also have the power of summoning," he said. He looked like he was about to sit back down when he saw the confused look on some of our faces. He let out a sigh and touched the table. He took a deep breath and a black circle, that didn't even look black but more like a void of some sort, with a bunch of weird symbols seeped into the table. Suddenly in the middle of it was a horrific being that if you squint might look like a demented dog.
"I can summon demons, ghouls, other beings like that, and they will listen to my commands." He said before looking at the thing. "Walk around the room then sit back in the circle," he ordered. The creature began walking around the room slowly before hopping back up on the table and sitting in the circle. He slowly turned his hand as he closed his fist and the creature vanished along with the circle around it.
He took a seat and looked towards Quinn and Levi expecting them to go now. I guess he did hear us talking.
Levi stood up next, "Hi, I'm Levi, I'm 24 and my code name is Malice Mind." Levi said before pausing. "My powers are telekinesis," he said before pulling the knife from Quinn's boot and placing it on the table. Was that what the pause was for? Was he asking Quinn for permission to grab her knife? "I am an empath, I can feel other people's emotions, as well as influence someone's emotions with my own. Lastly, I can read minds."
The room fell silent and all eyes were on Levi now. He just calmly took a seat. Quinn stood up quickly to pull the attention away from him. "I'm Quinn, I'm 56, and my codename is The Widow. I can also read minds. As well as walk on walls and ceilings and I have a sonic scream." She said, bringing her hand up to her throat to rub at the scar on her neck, "though I have trouble with that one after, well, this," she said before clearing her throat and taking a seat.
The room fell deadly silent. I couldn't tell what people thought after all this. All I knew was that Quinn's powers sounded terrifying in action.
"Alright, well, now that we got that settled," Pixis said, his voice cutting through the awkward tension in the room, "we can start planning days for the mission as well as the main attack."
"Quinn, Alastair, do you mind if we talk with you two a little more after this."
"That's fine with me," Alastair shrugged it off.
"Sure," Quinn nodded.
