Doing Nothing
The days went by slowly and more and more backlashes started to show themselves. As we had thought we hadn't figured them all out. It took time to figure some of them out and exactly what was happening. Some backlashes didn't show themselves until people started using their powers again. The first one was during a sparring match and it had us all panicked. Sasha and Rico had decided to test out their powers in a sparring match and when Rico was brought to her knees upon trying to use her power too much we were all a little concerned.
Apparently, when she releases too many toxins or gasses she will start having trouble breathing and will need to sit down for a few minutes. She of course insisted she was fine and that this was probably a one-time thing. No one was really convinced, not even her.
She wasn't the only one with this issue. Shadis has also been experiencing random shortness of breath to the point where he will have to sit or even lay down wherever he is when it happens.
Another one we figured out was Connie, his knees have been buckling a lot. We were hoping that when he brought that up at the beginning that it was just due to him being sore, but even after the soreness went away he still continued to have his knees buckle at random times.
A few other people had come forward and said that they were having frequent migraines or headaches when they used to rarely get them.
Franz has been having headaches almost every other day since the mission. Not to mention he also has random periods where he loses all of his energy sometimes accompanied by a headache or dizziness.
Hanna has been having really bad migraines, not as frequently as Franz's headaches, but still enough to be concerned. What was concerning was that she was having a lot of memory issues. This wasn't like Levi's either. Levi would just get confused and disoriented, but she was forgetting big details and events. She could barely recall the last mission we went on without someone constantly jogging her memory and reminding her what happened.
She wasn't the only one, though hers seems to be in a more severe state. Marco was also experiencing some memory loss. Nothing as bad as Hanna's but enough that it was clear to Jean that something was wrong. He wasn't sure until Marco had forgotten that Jean had lost feeling in his upper arms. That wasn't something Marco would just forget. Not to mention when Jean reminded him Marco had looked like this was the first he was hearing of it.
Another thing I had noticed, while I was hanging out in their room while Levi needed space, was that he wasn't his normal graceful self. He was bumping into things more frequently, and even dropped some of the things he was holding. When I asked him about it he didn't even seem to realize it at first, but after I had brought it up every little slip up became more obvious to the three of us. He was a lot clumsier than normal. We still don't know if it's an issue with his balance, or what but we know that something is going on there.
The last things we had noticed were pretty troubling. Nanaba had been the one to spot it for Hitch, and Molbit and Erwin had spotted it for Hanji. Nanaba had caught Hitch pacing on one of her shifts where she was keeping watch at the front. Nanaba had come to relieve her when she noticed the strange behavior. How she described it made it sound like Hitch was pacing from window to window peeking out between the boards. She had told us that she thought Hitch must have seen something from the way she was acting but when she asked her Hitch just told her she knew something was coming and that someone's watching her.
We thought it was just from stress, but when Rico caught her pacing her room late one night saying something similar we knew that something was wrong and it probably had to do with a backlash.
She wasn't the only one experiencing increased paranoia, Hanji was also caught acting strangely one night. Mobilt and Erwin were talking as they walked to their rooms and heard Hanji muttering to herself in her own room. When they knocked on the door they didn't hear a response. Erwin poked his head in and saw Hanji pacing her room muttering to herself how she had to be ready because people could attack at any moment. They ended up both staying up with her that night trying to calm her down and convince her that she was safe, no one was going to attack us.
It's barely been a week since the mission and it's been two days since we last had any reports of new backlash. I hope I'm not being too hopeful by thinking that we might have found them all, but we will never really know. It's hard to know if anything will show up, or if something really is a backlash or not.
I sat back and felt Levi's arms around my waist as he sat up. "How long have you been up?" he yawned out.
"A few minutes," I said, clearing my throat, pushing away all of my thoughts.
"We're all going to be okay," he said, sitting up and placing a hand on my cheek. Well, guess he heard some of my thoughts anyway.
"I know, it's just hard seeing the people we care about like this."
"I know baby, but they are strong. They will get through this, and we will help them every step of the way."
I can't help but feel guilty. I was the one who insisted on staying and helping. I don't regret staying to save people, but I regret dragging them down with me. I know that some of them would have rathered retreating but only stayed because we were insistent on it and they didn't want to let us down.
Now because of our actions, because of us people are being imprisoned and tortured. The guilt has eaten me up so much that I can't even bring myself to ask anyone what is going on outside these walls. I don't want to know if things got worse. I can't handle it if they did. Especially since I can't do a damn thing about it. I figured it's best if I don't know so I won't be tempted to do anything stupid.
"Baby look at me," Levi said cupping my face in his hands, "not a single person regrets staying back and helping those people. It was their choice to stay, you didn't pressure anyone into it."
I just nodded. I know he's telling the truth but a part of me won't accept it. A part of me still feels guilty for it. No matter how many times anyone tells me it wasn't my fault it still feels like it.
"As for everyone else, we will help them, we just need to wait a little. We are going to do everything we can, alright? We aren't abandoning anyone, we are going to do whatever we can to get them out of there."
"I know that, but it's just hard to sit on my ass and do nothing."
"You aren't doing nothing. You are thinking up ways to save them. You are resting and getting your strength back so you can help. You are doing what you can for the moment, which I know might not feel like much at the moment, but we are all going to help as soon as we can."
"You're right," I sighed. It's just so hard to wait around, but we got this. We will help everyone, or we will die trying.
"Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does then so be it," Levi read my thoughts and placed a kiss on my lips. "Until then, try not to dwell on what you can't do, but on what you can. Right now you can think up plans, so how about we think up some plans today rather than sit here and dwell on what we can't do?"
"I'd like that," I mumbled, laying my head on his shoulder.
There was a knock at our door and we looked up to see Pixis walking in. "I hope I didn't wake you," he said, seeing us still in bed.
"No, we were already up, what did you need?" Levi asked.
"I thought I should let you guys know that we are about to send some people on a supply run."
"What?" I asked, jumping out of the bed.
"Is that safe?" Levi asked, thinking the same thing as me.
"We don't have a choice, we are so low on supplies we won't make it another day without them."
"But-."
"We are being as safe as possible, we are only sending people we weren't in the last mission and whose faces weren't in any recordings online. We have smaller groups and fewer people going, they are just going to hit up multiple stores. So we can get the same amount of supplies, it will just take them a little longer," Pixis said, trying to reassure us.
"I want to be on standby in case something goes wrong."
"I'm sorry but you can't."
"Why the hell not?" I asked, getting really frustrated.
"Because the last thing we need is the one whose face was plastered everywhere to go out into public right now."
I stood there with my mouth open. I wanted to argue with him, but I couldn't. He had a good point. I would just cause more trouble.
"We do have some people as backup right?" I finally asked.
"We have a small team that can step in if needed," he reassured me.
I sat back down on the bed in defeat and nodded. "Just let us know when they get back, or if the backup team was needed."
"I'll keep you posted," Pixis said, patting my shoulder before heading out of the room.
"It's for the best," Levi said, trying to reassure me.
"I know that!" I snapped at him before taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I'm just frustrated."
"I know," he said rubbing my back, "You're not one for sitting around and doing nothing, and this probably isn't helping."
"It's not."
"Well, I have an idea that will take your mind off of it."
"I don't feel like planning right this second," I mumbled. My head is too foggy now to make a good plan.
"I know, that's not what I was suggesting," Levi said and I caught what I must have missed last time. A suggestive tone that made my eyes look up and meet his.
Sure enough, there was a small smirk on his lips as he looked me up and down.
"Oh," I said, giving him a smile, "well I might just take you up on that offer," I said straddling his lap.
"I figured you would."
