Descending
"I need to find a way down there," I said looking at the others. I could sit up here and more for all the people we might have lost or I could go down there and prevent us from losing anymore.
"Mikasa, how do you expect to get down there?" Armin asked. "Do you need me to go look for an opening?" he asked, trying to find a way to help.
"Zahra you said there was a sewer under us right?"
"Yes."
"There has to be a manhole somewhere that is still intact," I can go down through one of those, if you can find one then I can get down there and we can try and find people.
"Alright I'm on it," Armin said before running off to go look through the rubble to see if he can see anything by phasing through stuff that the rest of us can't see.
It felt like an eternity before he returned but it has probably only been like 10 minutes. "I think I found a way down just a few blocks this way," He said excitedly tugging at my arm.
"Armin? Mikasa? Hanji?" Petra asked, walking up to us.
"Petra, oh thank god you're okay." I couldn't help but feel revived seeing another familiar face. She seemed to be okay, a few cuts and bruises, but she was walking okay.
"Thank god that I've found you guys, I found a few others and they are injured. They are this way, I thought I saw Armin so I followed him. I left them back there," she said pointing towards where Armin had pointed. Well, we were heading that way anyway. All the more people to help with the rescue.
"Who did you find and how badly are they injured?" Hanji asked straight away.
"Auruo, he has a broken leg, Eld is unconscious and it looks like he's having trouble breathing, and Mike seems to have ruptured both his eardrums. I think he might also have a concussion.
"Alright I'll start with Eld since that seems to be the most severe and then I'll work on Mike and then Auruo," Hanji said, mostly talking to herself trying to figure out how to triage them.
We started heading over towards them when we saw a bunch of people start running in the opposite direction. "What's going on?" Armin tried asking some of the people running past us.
"Run, they are coming," is all someone said as they didn't even stop to fully explain.
We started hearing gunshots in the distance and Petra froze for a second before taking off in a dead sprint. "Petra, wait!" I tried to yell after her but she didn't stop.
"They are still over there!" She yelled and we ran after her. I wanted to tell her to wait so that I could check it out and get them all out of there but she just kept running. We kept trying to catch up to her but I swear she was running just shy of Connie's speed by this point.
"I'm getting a bad feeling about this," I heard Zahra say. She did say that was one of her powers, probability, and aura reading. I mean it makes sense she doesn't have a good feeling going towards the gunshots.
I watched as she stopped and I could see the others sitting or laying on the ground. It looked like Eld was still unconscious, Mike looked completely unaware of what was going on. Auruo seemed to be the only one who knew what was going on and he looked scared.
Petra was helping Auruo to his feet, having him lean most of his weight on her shoulder. She was trying to tell Mike to pick Eld up but it seems like he was having a hard time understanding. I had just about caught up to them when I saw the guards start rounding the corner approaching.
"Hanji can you-?"
"On it," I heard Hanji say from behind me. I watched as Vines rapidly stretched past me and grabbed Eld from the floor as well as wrapped around Mike's waist. Hanji was pulling them over behind a damaged but partially standing wall. I had just caught up to Petra and Auruo and was about to have her hand him over to me so I could carry him when a gunshot rang out.
The only thing I kept thinking was please tell me they shot at me. I looked at Petra and Auruo to see if they had gotten hit and I saw blood starting to spread on the back of Auruo's shirt.
That's when all hell broke loose. I pulled Petra in front of me and scooped Auruo into my arms as his good leg started to collapse from under him. He was shot high up on his back. I was just hoping that the bullet didn't hit anything important.
Petra was trying to check on him, but I was just trying to get her to move with me to where Hanji was behind the concrete wall. The number of gunshots at this point was deafening and I couldn't hear anything. I could just feel them pelting my back like a bunch of little fingers poking at me. I was starting to get annoyed and that is the last thing these guards want. The second I get these two to Hanji they are dead fucking meat.
When we got behind the wall I laid Auruo down and asked Hanji if she could take a look at him because I didn't want him bleeding out on us.
"Mikasa," Hanji's voice was quiet. I almost missed it because of all the chaos happening around us.
"I need to get out there and hold them off just worry about saving him."
Before I could leave her hand held onto my wrist. "Mikasa I can't."
What does she mean she can't. I get she's stressed we all are, but this isn't the time for-. I looked down at Auruo and he wasn't moving. He wasn't breathing. He was just laying there with blood over his chest. The bullet must have gone straight through his heart.
"No, Hanji you have to please," Petra called out and Hanji just closed her eyes.
"Petra, I can't heal him because he's already gone," Hanji said, keeping her eyes closed not wanting to look her in the eyes.
I watched as Petra's mouth opened and closed a bunch as she tried to process what she was being told. I watched as she was about to start arguing with Hanji that she was wrong, but it seems she just froze up. I warped my arms around her to try and calm her down, but the scary part was she already seemed calm.
She just gently nudged my hands away before standing up. I was about to yell at her to get down before she got shot when I heard another gunshot ring out. Panic set in as I watched her waiting for her to fall over. I just saw a streak of dust fly past her face.
Did she turn the bullet into a gas as it was coming at her?
"Which one of you shot him?" She yelled.
Her question was met with more gunfire. None of which hit her due to her own powers at work. Despite the anger in her voice, she looked relatively calm. When all their gunfire halted she was still standing. I stood up next to her and they didn't even try and shoot at me. I guess they realized it wasn't working before.
"I asked a question. Which one of you shot him?"
I didn't expect there to be an answer, but someone actually spoke up.
"I did, I shot that vermin, and you next you bitch." Some cocky asshole had spoken up.
I watched before my eyes as he turned into a bloody puddle on the floor. I felt my blood run cold as I turned my eyes back to Petra. I wanted to ask her so many different questions but nothing came out. The guards backed up a few steps and once again it seems we are at a standstill. Now is my chance to go and push them back a little more.
I guess Hanji could read me like a book cause she grabbed my arm and shook her head telling me to kneel down next to her. She was still working on Eld at the moment.
"We will have to hold them off, right now you are the only one who can help the people under the rubble. You need to go."
I wanted to argue, I wanted to stay and fight, push them back to make sure no more of my friends, my family were at risk. I didn't want to lose anyone else today, especially not if I could help it, but then again no matter what I would lose people. Whether it be up here fighting them back, or down there to the rubble.
"But I would need you to come with me. You are the one that can heal them if they are injured."
"You are the one who can free people who are trapped. We need to focus on that at the moment. Petra and I are the only ones who can really hold them back from a distance at the moment. After we disarm them, and I finish healing these two Zahra, and maybe Mike and Eld can help, but right now we are everyone else's only chance."
Again I wanted to argue but I couldn't. I wanted to say but what if you can't hold them all off, but the more I sit here and argue, the more time we waste, the more people will die.
"Go, we will be okay," Hanji finally said.
When I still didn't move Armin grabbed my arm before making all of his body invisible. Smart they aren't going to shoot at me, but now they can't even see him. He led me towards the manhole that was intact. "Down here," he said, finally making himself visible. I ripped the manhole cover off and threw it aside with a loud clang. I started descending down into the dark hole hoping my eyes would adjust quickly.
When Armin had come down next to me I asked him if he knew which way I should head if there was anyone he could see around us by phasing.
"Wait here I'll be right back," He said and I leaned against the wall waiting for him to come back. I closed my eyes for a moment hoping to adjust them to the darkness, but I just kept seeing Auruo's face. Lifeless. His eyes were still open looking at me. Like he knew it was my fault, I didn't get to him in time.
I just pried my eyes open and prayed that they adjusted quickly not wanting to close them again.
Armin finally comes back and tells me he sees some people up ahead who need help. "Let me see which paths you have to take," Armin said before vanishing again.
"Alright, go left," I heard him say when he came back again. "You might have to move some rubble to get to them," he warned me ahead of time.
"I don't care as long as I'm able to get to them."
I started walking with Armin leading me. He finally got me to the rubble I had to move and he warned me to be careful he wasn't sure how stable the surrounding rubble was.
"Well, you might want to back up. If it collapses on me it will just be like a very annoying ball pit, if it collapses on you..." I let my voice fade out. I watched as he took several steps back before stopping very far away. Good now that he's safe, let's start clearing the way.
I started moving stuff out of the way when part of it did collapse. I managed to just hold it up before moving the rubble above me around to stop it from fully caving in making my own support beams from some of the other rubble. It looked sturdy enough when I finished and we were able to keep walking through.
"That was so cool," Armin said, running up behind me before looking at the ceiling. "Is it safe?"
"For now," I said before looking back at him, "where to next?"
"Just up this hall and then through a little more rubble."
When we got to the next patch of rubble I started moving this more carefully because I didn't want the roof to come down on anyone on the other side.
"What's happening?" I heard a muffled female voice ask.
"I'm not sure, just stay away from the wall," another voice said. This one was male.
Once I managed to clear enough rubble that I could see through the other side I saw Erwin and Hanna on the other side of the dark room. They were both lying on the floor and I was worried they might be seriously injured. "Mikasa?" Hanna asked, sitting up. "Oh thank god, Erwin needs help, he's stuck!"
"It's Mikasa?" Erwin asked. "Oh thank goodness." I could hear his relief from here. I finished mankind a way through before walking over to them. I told Hanna to go with Armin a safe distance away while I tried to get Erwin out.
"Anything broken?" I asked not sure what injuries he might have.
"I think my shoulder is dislocated, but I could feel everything up until about 15 minutes ago.
"Circulation was cut off," I nodded, "alright, well let's get you out of here hopefully I made it in time." The last thing I wanted was for him to lose his arm. I couldn't take my time to move the rubble to get to him. I had to just lift it and hope he can get it out without the whole ceiling coming down.
"Alright I'm going to lift you pull," I said and he nodded. "On the count of three. One, two, three," I said before lifting the rubble. I watched as he slipped his arm out. I gently placed the rubble back down and took a deep breath of relief that the whole ceiling didn't come down on us.
I would have made sure we are both okay, but it would have been very hard to get us both out while my hands are trying to hold the rubble off of him.
"There's a clear path to the surface that way, if you can't get up the ladder you might just want to wait at the ladder for me, besides it's probably safer if you wait down here anyway."
"Why what's going on up there?" Erwin asked.
"They started attacking again."
"Hasn't there been enough casualties?" Hanna asked, her voice clearly distraught.
"You guys saw some?" I asked I mean I saw my fair share today, but I have no clue what they've witnessed.
"First Gunther," Hanna passed before pointing back behind us, "now they've taken Franz from me."
I looked over at the other corner of the space they were in and managed to see what she was pointing at. It was a body.
"Thomas and Auruo are also gone," Armin said quietly. I could tell he didn't want to tell them but I guess he decided they deserved to know.
"Oh god, who is going to tell Petra," Erwin said, using his good hand to rub at his face.
"She saw it happen," I said, looking him dead in the eyes. "She melted the person who shot him."
Erwin just froze for a moment before he nodded, "good for her."
They started heading towards the manhole and were going to wait for us there apparently Erwin was starting to get some pain in his arm back before they started leaving because he was wincing as he held his arm. He must be in a lot of pain, but it's a good thing he can actually feel it now.
"Alright Armin, where next?" I asked looking for him to guide me to the next group of people I could help.

Author's note~ I know I've said this a few times but now that I have all of the final chapters planned out I can give an exact number. there should only be 8 more chapters before the end of the story (9 or 10 if I have trouble fitting one or two of the scenes into one chapter) this really is the final stretch. Thank you guys all for reading the story. I hope you continue to enjoy it until the end. ~TJ
