Death Sentence
After all night of coming up with plans for different outcomes, I feel like we got nowhere with it. I mean we have a few makeshift plans here and there but nothing that seems like it would work no matter what. "Don't worry we will come up with something, we have time. Try not to stress too much about it right now. Get some rest, I'll talk to Nanaba as soon as she wakes up," Pixis had told us, dismissing us as soon as the sun started to rise. I wanted to keep going, but he insisted that we get some rest. Either because we all kept yawning, or he was afraid of others waking up and coming in to check on us or him.
Levi had crawled right into bed and laid down without hesitation. I forgot he didn't sleep earlier he just laid with me as I slept. He was probably exhausted right about now.
"I am, so can you please get your ass over here," he asked in a groggy voice lifting an arm up so I can squeeze in and cuddle up to him.
I just smiled and walked over laying down next to him. I can't help but worry a bit about this mission, but I have to push all of that down right now and pray we will figure something out soon. I need to let Levi rest and the last thing he needs is my concerning thoughts bouncing around his brain. Besides, sleep sounds nice anyway. Even if I wasn't physically tired I'm mentally tired. My brain is fried from trying to think up a million different plans all night only to come up with one or two that might be the slightest bit helpful.
"We will worry about all that later but right now, please," Levi said, not even bothering to finish his sentence as he closed his eyes.
"I know, sleep now worry later," I said closing my eyes and scooting in closer to him.
"Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too," I said, placing a kiss on his cheek. I opened my eyes for a moment and saw a small smile slide across his face before closing my eyes again. Sleep now worry later, I mentally repeated to myself. I let a relaxed feeling wash over me even if I know it will be short-lived.
I sat at my desk looking over our notes and realizing we really didn't have much. No plans that were good enough to stand alone. I mean if all goes well these will be fine, but if everything goes wrong with these as our backup plans we would surely die. I let out a sigh knowing there wasn't much I could do at the moment. I had a pounding headache from the long night of brainstorming.
I was just hoping Nanaba woke up before Shadis did. The last thing I need from him is a lecture about sleeping and overworking myself. Though it is nice to have someone looking out for me even if they are a bit annoying while doing it.
"Hey wake up," I felt a hand shake my shoulder. I looked up and saw Shadis standing over me. I didn't even remember closing my eyes let alone falling asleep at my desk.
"What time is it?" I asked sitting up. Shit did I miss Nanaba? How long was I asleep for?
"Like 7?" he said confused, "were you up all night?"
"Yeah, I'll head to bed in a little," I said letting out a sigh of relief realizing I had only slept for like an hour.
"No you're going to bed now," he rolled his eyes trying to get me to stand up. I just ignored him.
"Is anyone else up?"
"A few people, but not very many. Why?"
"I had a question for Nanaba, is she up?"
"Yes, she's up. What on earth was so important that you stayed up all night to ask her?"
"Huh? Oh, it's nothing special. It's not the reason I stayed up, but I might as well ask it before going to bed," I said, trying to throw any suspicion off.
"Alright then what were you doing up all night?"
"I was just thinking about what we should do next and lost track of time," I kept my tone neutral and unbothered. My response should make perfect sense because this isn't the first time this has happened.
"I see, did you come up with anything?"
"Not a damn thing," I let out a frustrated sigh. I mean I'm not lying I feel like we didn't come up with anything. We are up shit's creek without a paddle.
"Well, we will figure something out, don't waste sleep over it. The less sleep you get the less that brain of yours will work," he said before patting me on the back.
"After your question, go to bed," he said, glaring me down.
"Okay, okay, I will," I smiled.
"You better," he rolled his eyes heading to the door, "I'll send Nanaba in if you want?"
"That would be great." I sat at my desk patiently waiting for Nanaba to head in. He was right. I did need to go to bed. My head felt so heavy and it was so hard to keep my eyes open. Not to mention the pounding in my head only got worse from the short nap.
"You wanted to see me?" she asked, poking her head in.
"Yes, please take a seat." She came in and did just that. Now comes the hard part. I have to explain to her what we are planning on doing, have her gather information, and convince her not to tell anyone else about this.
"Shadis said you had a question?" she asked after a moment of silence as I tried to piece together my erratic thoughts.
How on earth was I supposed to ask this of her? How can I phrase this without her instantly panicking? I can't just say, hey we are going on a suicide mission and we need you to get the best information so we possibly don't die a horrible death. "Yes, well less of a question and more of a request," I mumbled. "I have a mission planned, but no one can know about it."
"That's never a good sign," she sighed, lowering her head. "You all know how the last secret mission went," she said looking at me.
The memories of Reiner's dead body and Shadis clinging onto him refusing to leave his side flashed behind my eyes. Everything flooded back and I started blinking my eyes hoping to clear them away. "I'm well aware," I mumbled.
"Please tell me this will be different," she asked looking me in the eyes.
"As much as I wish I could, I can't. In all honesty, it will probably go exactly the same way or worse," I said being straight upfront with it. "But don't worry, you aren't going on the mission, I just want you to gather information for it," I said trying to ease her worries even if it was only slightly.
"Yeah cause that's any better. My information will be the thing that gets people killed," she let out a sigh before looking back up at me, "who is going on this mission?"
"I am."
"You can't, your team needs you. You can't just go in alone and leave them behind."
"I'm not going in alone."
"Who's going with you?" she asked, even more concerned.
"Eren and Levi."
"Pixis you can't. You three can't go on a suicide mission and leave everyone alone. They need you, they need all of you."
"Look, we all know the risks, but if this works out the payoff will be better than anything we could accomplish on our own. We aren't planning on going down without a fight. We all know the risks and we are prepared to do what it takes to get to our end goal."
"What is so important that you are willing to risk your lives for it?"
"Getting our message out there, our stories, the truth. People need to see us as humans, and living breathing people rather than the monsters they have been told we are."
"You're taking the activists up on their offer," she let out a sigh knowing exactly what this was.
"Yes."
"You need me to find one that isn't a trap," she lowered her head knowing how much pressure I am placing on her.
"Yes."
"But what if I-."
"If it is a trap then that's fine, we are trying to go in prepared for everything. I want you to know that no matter what happens whether we end up meeting up with an actual activist or we walk headfirst into a trap none of that is on you. You are doing the best you can with the information you have; anything that happens to us in the end, that's on us. We are choosing to walk in there so whatever happens, don't blame yourself."
"I'm assuming since it's secret I can't ask anyone else for help either?"
I nodded and she lowered her head again. Her eyes snapped back up to me and she glared me down. "I'll do this, but you better promise me that you come back in one piece. All of you. I know you said it's not going to be my fault but you and I both know that if anything happens to any of you, your blood is on my hands. I don't want that on my conscience so you better get your asses back home safe."
"I can't promise we will, all I can promise is that we will try our hardest."
"You guys are stubborn, anything you put your mind to you can do. So you better have, getting home safe as your top priority," she said before standing up.
"We will."
"Good, now I'll head out and get that information, give me a few days and I'll give you what I can. I won't tell anyone, but if something does happen-."
"I'll have a note prepared that explains everything."
She let out a shaky breath and nodded. "That note better end up in the trash when you all get back," she said. I know she's hoping for the best, but all of our minds are thinking about the worst-case scenario. She knows choosing the wrong person to have us meet with is a death sentence, and we are more than ready to face that sentence if there is even a chance that we can get our stories out there. People need to know the truth, they need something to sympathize with before they lose interest.
