Count of Three
"So you aren't feeling anything?" I asked again to double-check with Levi. I mean it's good he's in no pain, but that's also really bad. If he isn't feeling anything then Nanaba isn't feeling anything. The only two reasons I could think of are her blood flow is restricted or if the rubble has hit her spine and she could possibly be paralyzed. Neither of these options are good. If her blood flow is restricted we have to find a way to get this stuff off her quickly. If she's paralyzed that opens the door to a bunch more probabilities.
"Nothing," he mumbled, keeping his eyes to the floor. He knew just as much as I did and I could tell he was panicking.
"How are we supposed to tell Rico?"
"I don't know," He mumbled back. "Eren, I don't think she would listen to us even if she did tell her," his eyes looked up and met mine for the first time in a while and I could see just how worried he was.
"We have to tell her. Even if she doesn't want to hear it she needs to know that-."
"Why are you two just standing there whispering. We have to do something, anything," Rico begged, finally pulling herself to her feet. "I know we can't move it off of her, but maybe we can find someone who can. There's a bunch of tunnels and branch off paths some of the others might have fallen down here with us."
"Okay, we can look around, you should stay with her," Levi said before shooting me a look. He knew I would be pissed. He wasn't going to tell her. Was he expecting me to break it to her? Do I have to be the bad guy? I will if I have to.
"Rico-." I started only for Levi to cut me off.
"We are going to go look now, yell if you need us we should still be within earshot."
"I will, just please hurry," she said, turning back to focus on Nanaba.
"No, I don't want you to be the bad guy," Levi whispered, grabbing my arm as he pulled me away so we could go search and probably talk in private. "I don't want to tell her yet. She's not going to listen anyway, we should look first to see if we can find anything or anyone to help, and then maybe we can break the news to her. Let's not tell her until we know we've exhausted all other options."
I took a deep breath and nodded. "It's not going to change her situation, what if she is paralyzed. We don't know how to handle a situation like that."
"I'm trying not to think negatively, for Rico's sake."
"For Rico's sake? Or because you're in denial and don't want to admit something could be really wrong and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it."
Levi just froze for a second before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. "I'm supposed to be the mind reader ya know, how do you always know what I'm thinking.
"Spend enough time with a person and you tend to know how they think," I said looking at him with a smile, "it's okay, we might not be able to fix this one, but we can certainly try our best to do what we can. If there is nothing we can do then we will be right by Rico's side the whole time."
"Oh yeah leaving her to deal with this alone was never an option," Levi said before grabbing my arm and making me stop. I didn't even dare speak knowing he was trying to listen to something. I looked around not sure what he heard but trying to listen too.
"Hello!" Levi yelled out. "Quinn, over here!" He called before looking at me. "I could hear her thoughts."
Oh, so I guess me trying to listen in wasn't going to work since I can't hear their thoughts. At least we found someone else.
"She's not alone either," Levi said letting me know. "They are injured," Levi said before taking off running down the tunnel.
Shit, "Is it bad?" I asked and Levi just shrugged. We turned the corner and saw them. Quinn was holding Alastair up as they walked and Xander was with them. Is that someone on his back?
"It's Hassam, he's not doing too well," Levi said as we caught up to them. I could see Hassam a little clearer. He looked like he was unconscious."How can we help?" he asked them, catching his breath.
"Do you know a way out?" Xander asked. "This one keeps slipping in and out of consciousness, and it's not looking so good."
"No," I mumbled, turning back around. We haven't even had a chance to look. We want to stay with Rico and Nanaba. We don't want to leave them behind.
"You're with Rico and Nanaba?" Quinn asked, looking at me.
"They are over this way," I pointed back behind us.
"Go grab them, we need to get out of here," Xander said and I paused for a moment.
"We can't." Levi finally said.
"We left them back there to look for help, Nanaba is stuck and Rico won't leave her side," I said looking at them.
"You two can't help free her?" Xander asked.
"No, it's too much even for our powers, and if we do this wrong the whole thing could cave in on us," Levi said looking around.
"Shit, okay, maybe we can take a look," Xander mumbled, "lead us."
"Before we do there's something else," I mumbled.
"When I'm around you guys I feel your pain and your injuries," Levi explained.
"Do we need to back up? Is it too much for you?" Alastair asked.
"No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying when I'm around Nanaba I don't feel pain."
They were just staring at us with confusion, all of them except Quinn who let out a shaky breath. "That's not good."
"Am I missing something?" Xander asked, looking between us.
"If I can't feel pain it means neither can Nanaba," Levi explained.
"Which means Nanaba has no feeling in her body, which could be really really bad."
"Paralyzes," Xander breathed out.
"Or just loss of blood flow, which isn't as bad right now, but it can get worse if we don't act quick," Quinn said. I can see Levi isn't the only one trying to stay positive.
"We haven't told Rico yet," I said looking at Levi.
"She won't listen to us even if we do," he said defending himself, "she barely listened when we told her that we couldn't use our powers to get Nanaba free. The only reason she did is because we said that trying could cause the whole thing to collapse in on her."
"Yeah that sounds like her, she's always been stubborn and protective," Quinn nodded. "Take us to them, let's see if there's anything we can do to help."
We lead them back down towards the path. Rico was looking up towards us. "I heard you guys yelling is everything oka-. Quinn!" She jumped up and ran over to us throwing her arms around Quinn. "Thank god you're here. Nanaba- she's-."
"I know they filled us in while we were walking, we are going to take a look and see if there's anything we can do," Quinn said, rubbing Rico's back gently before letting her arms fall away so she could walk closer to Nanaba.
"Do you mind watching this one while we take a look?" Xander said gently, setting Hassam down. Rico walked over and sat with him as he regained consciousness.
"How are you doing Nanaba," Quinn asked, trying to distract her from all the weight on her back as the rest of us discussed what we could do.
"Can Rico hear me?" She asked and Quinn shook her head. "Not too good. I can't feel anything, but it's really hard to breathe."
"Alright, we will see what we can do about that. We are hoping we have enough people to get this off of you now."
"If you can't then it's okay. I know you guys are trying your best," she said and I felt my heart melt. She's over there getting suffocated to death by a pile of rocks and is still trying to reassure us.
Quinn stepped away and met up with the rest of us a few feet away to see what we were thinking. "So is it possible?"
"Maybe, it's a bit of a long shot but we might just be able to pull it off," I said repeating what we discussed. With our powers combined, we should be able to get that off of her while You and Rico pull her out from under, however, we need to keep Hassam a safe distance away just in case this whole section comes crashing down. We might be able to get that off of her, but we definitely can't hold up the whole ceiling if it fails."
"I'll fill Rico in," Quinn started before turning back around, "on everything," she said before continuing over towards her.
"Hey hun, so we have an idea but there are a few things I want to talk about first," she said sitting down next to her. "There are already some issues we are noticing."
"What issues?"
"Well, Nanaba's not in any pain."
"That's a good thing right, she's not suffering at all," Rico's eyes were desperate and I almost forced myself to turn away from their conversation but I couldn't bring myself to.
"Yes it's good she's not suffering, but that means that there is something else wrong," Quinn explained. She told her everything we knew and even managed to stop Rico from becoming hysterical by telling her that we had a plan.
"It's not guaranteed to work, but I think right now is our only option. She's struggling to breathe as is, and if it is a blood flow problem we need to fix that as fast as possible."
"So what you're saying is if we do nothing she will definitely die, but if we do something she might die," Rico asked.
"Yes," Quinn nodded. "We are hoping that she doesn't and we are going to do everything we can to save her, but there are no guarantees."
Rico was shaking and I could tell she didn't want to know all of this, but keeping her out of the loop just felt wrong.
"What did Nanaba say about this?" She finally asked, taking a few deep breaths.
"We haven't told her yet, but I think she already knows most of it. I'll go check with her right now."
"Do whatever she wants you to do," Rico said, holding herself back.
Quinn walked up to Nanaba and explained the plan and I watched as Nanaba gave her a weak smile.
"Don't do it." My heart dropped. "I don't want you guys risking all of your lives just for me. I'm probably gonna die either way. I don't need to take you all with me."
"So you're just going to give up? Just like that." Xander's voice rang out behind me. "You were strong enough to hold on for this long and you're going to give up now? At least put some faith in us."
"I don't want you guys to die too."
"Why are you so sure we will? I think we can actually pull this off which is saying something since this is the first plan that I've actually felt might work. I don't know about you but I don't like leaving people behind if I can help it and this seems like something that can be helped."
Nanaba just stared at him for a moment before letting out a pained sigh. "Fine, if you're so sure then do it, but if you guys die I swear I'll beat the shit out of you in the afterlife.
"Rico, take Hassam over there and get him out of the way just in case, then come over to me and be ready to pull her out."
"You guys have to do it gently if it is her spine that's injured. We definitely don't want that becoming any worse if it can be helped," Alastair said, limping over to where Hassam was sitting. He was going to use his power from back there to help since he can't really run out of the way if something does go wrong.
"On the count of three," I said, taking a deep breath.
"One," I started.
"Two," Xander said with a nod.
"Three," Quinn finished it off.
