Bullet
I was called into my office a few days later in the middle of the night by Nanaba. She was as sure as she could be about her answer, but I could tell she was still nervous to give me a definite answer. She was fidgeting and pacing the room. She refused to sit even though I offered her a seat a few different times.
She gave me a name and a meeting place as well as all the information she could gather on them. Which wasn't that much, but it was more than I expected in the time it took.
"So he seemed pretty genuine from what I was able to see."
"Did you talk to him?"
"Sorta but they didn't know it was me. I also left a note that said if they wanted to meet with exiles they would leave a separate note in the location I had listened to with a safe meeting place's address written on it."
"Where was this place?"
"Stuck under a park bench in the middle of town." I watched as they placed it and left. I came back to the bench as a few different people and sat there a few different times for different lengths of time. So if they were watching and photographing everyone then they have faces of people who don't exist. When I grabbed the note I grabbed it through the holes in the bench through an oversized sleeve so they couldn't even tell when it was grabbed. They didn't even try to catch anyone then and there so I don't know if that means they are safe or..." her voice drifted off.
"If they are trying to catch more of us at the meeting," I sighed.
"Exactly," she nodded. "Either way this is the safest group I have come across. The first few were a little sketchy."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Well, the first note I left was met with the people hanging around the drop-off area. Like the area was way more populated than normal. There was an ice cream vendor, a jogger who was doing laps around the park every thirty minutes, and a few others out of place looking "civilians." The second time no one left a note in return, and the third had a piece on them when they left a note. They thought it was hidden in their pants but I could see the outline when they bent over to place the note. This one actually seemed genuine and didn't do anything suspicious when leaving the note. Still, be very careful going into this. I'm not totally sure that this is safe."
"Okay, we will keep that in mind. I'll fill Eren and Levi in and we will meet them. When do they want us to meet and where?" I asked and she handed me the note.
I looked at it and saw an abandoned building that I recognized. This place was a fancy bar back in the day but after all the trials started happening it was forced to close down since the owner was a blue badge. They weren't getting customers after people found out and they were forced to close. They wanted to meet at 3 am tomorrow night. As sketchy as that would sound to a normal person it sounded like the safest bet for both parties if this was a person just trying to help rather than a trap. However, it could still be a trap, guards silencing people in the dead of night.
I took a deep breath as I weighed both options. No matter how I looked at it we were going into a dangerous situation and we had to be prepared for everything. It didn't help that all our safety backup plans weren't working out.
"Alright, I'll go grab the boys and we will make some game plans for tomorrow night," I said starting to stand up before she shook her head. "No I'll send them your way, I'm heading that way anyway."
I sat back down and watched as she walked out of the room. She was filled with so much anxiety she was out the door before I could even blink. God help us. "This is going to be the death of us isn't it," I mumbled taking a deep breath.
"I hope not," Levi said from the doorway.
"Yeah, I would rather avoid dying if that's an option," Eren said behind him.
"Well, then we have to come up with some good ideas tonight because tomorrow is the meeting," I said letting them know right off the bat.
"Shit," they both whispered. They both sat down in the chairs. I watched as Eren kicked his feet up and hooked them over Levi's lap.
"Okay, well so far our best option is going in with Pixis's force fields on us," Eren said repeating the one backup plan we did have.
"And using my and your power to stop any bullets if we see guns," Levi said.
"Yeah, but that only works if we see the guns, but not if they shoot us from behind or get an ambush on us, and even if we see the guns it's not guaranteed we can act fast enough."
"If we see the guns and we see a bit of a standstill I say I should use my powers and lift up any knives as fast as I can and be ready to throw them at anyone.
"That could spook them into pulling the trigger," Eren rolled his eyes.
"It could also confuse or scare them if done right," I nodded seeing where Levi was going with this. We have the benefit of knowing what we will be up against. Whether it's 5 guys or 50 we know they will be armed with guns. They don't know what we are capable of. For all they know we could be invincible or hell a human voodoo doll. If we stand there confidently and Levi has knives pointed at them with one of those signatures smirks it could scare them enough to buy us a little more time." it wasn't a concrete plan but it was something. Even if it bought us merely seconds that would be enough time for me to put force fields around all of us.
"Well, what can I do?" Eren asked knowing that both of us now had something to do with the backup plans.
"Well, if they start shooting or even pull out guns I need you to quickly make gravity fields. One on our side of the room keeping us in place and the other in the corner of the room as strong as needed to pull everyone together and get them away from us.
"Is this really our backup plan?" Eren asked, looking at me. The fear his eyes held knowing that this plan wouldn't be enough to save us if shit hit the fan in any other way than we were expecting.
"I'm afraid so. You can still back out if-."
"Shut the fuck up," he cut me off. His legs quickly hit the floor and he rose to his feet not even a second later. "Just 'cause I'm worried doesn't mean I'm backing out now. I agreed to this mission knowing damn well I might not be coming back after it, so don't count me out just yet," he said with that same determination in his eyes as always.
I didn't know which look I preferred, the determination or the fear. When he's afraid he is more cautious but less confident, but when he's determined he's more reckless, but also more confident. I just wish he would be cautious and confident is that too much to ask?"
"Sorry, I was just double-checking," I said, putting my hands up making sure I meant no harm by the statement. "We all know the risks of this mission, and I guess I was just trying to be hopeful that you boys would back out and save yourselves." I watched as Eren sat back down taking a deep breath. I guess he realized he was being a little testy since he closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths to calm down. I know he's just acting like this cause he's scared but man I don't want him trying to pick a fight tonight.
"You should know we're both too stupid for that," Levi said with a small smile trying to reign everything back in.
"True, but I mean you guys learned that from me I guess," I laughed and watched as Eren nodded along with a small smile. Looks like he finally calmed back down. "So it's decided, we will all be going on the mission and whatever happens..." I said letting my voice drift out.
"Happens," Eren finished. His tone was tense and his jaw was clenched tightly. I watched as he grabbed Levi's hand giving him a nod.
"But no matter what we will give it our all to come back home safely," Levi said looking at both of us.
"Damn right," Eren nodded.
"If not, well, I'm sure everyone will find a way to bring our sorry asses back just to kill us again," I said knowing that Ms. Magnolia would have our heads no matter what. If we come back alive or dead.
"Hell, even if we live I'm sure we would be toast coming back," Levi let out a laugh.
"Well either way we are dead I don't know if I would rather it be by a bullet or by mom's hands," Eren laughed.
"I think I would prefer the bullet," Levi joked.
"Oh she's not that bad," I said knowing damn well I was lying.
"No she's so much worse," Levi said shaking his head, "You haven't seen her when she's truly angry."
"Wait, so you're saying the few times I have seen her angry that's not as bad as it can get?" I asked.
"Nowhere close."
I looked to Eren and then back to Levi, both of us just blinking trying to process what he said. "Maybe you're right maybe we would be better off taking the bullet," I said, letting out a nervous laugh.
