Boken Promise
This is not going well. I can only do so much, but I can already feel my powers straining and I haven't even started healing people yet. I'm wasting all of my energy holding them off. I'm trying to disarm as many of them as I can by ripping the guns out of their hands with the vines. I'm also using my vines to pin them down and stop them from shooting.
Petra is melting their guns, and I think she's officially thrown pacifism out the window because after she killed the guy who killed Auruo she hasn't stopped. I think something in her snapped now that she's lost Auruo. It only takes losing enough people to break a person's willpower. She's not doing it at random but if guards get too close to us and she feels like we are in danger she will use her powers to stop them from getting any closer.
Zahra is using her power to tell us who has the most probability of getting close to us so I can target them accordingly. I finished healing Mike and Eld while Mikasa and Petra were holding them off. Eld is still unconscious; he should be waking up soon but there is no telling when he will actually wake up. Mike is keeping an eye on him to make sure he's safe while he's unconscious.
"Hanji, how much longer do you think we can hold them off?" Mike asked me while he was trying to look at the chaos happening beyond the makeshift barricade while staying behind us.
"I don't know," I said honestly. I mean my arms are already starting to hurt from how much I'm using my powers. I wouldn't be surprised if Petra is already past her limit with how much she's using it. She's not used to using her power this much but her adrenaline is probably helping distract her from the pain of overuse.
"Is there even a point of holding them off anymore?" Zahra asked.
"What are you talking about of course there is. Why wouldn't we fight to hold them off?"
"There is a great probability that they have already gotten past us at some points. With how much rubble there is here I doubt this is the only place they are trying to get through which is why I've been watching behind us to make sure they don't have anyone sneak up behind us. Meaning what we are doing here is probably just wasted effort."
"And if you're wrong?"
"Highly improbable," She said shaking her head, "the probability goes higher the more we go on. It's in the 80 percentile right now."
"We are still holding back some of them, we just have to hope that others are holding them off in other directions," I said, hoping that all of this isn't for nothing. Even if some did manage to get past us at least I can say I wasn't the one who let them through. I can't live with that guilt on my conscience.
"Wait, is that...?" Zahra's words fell silent and she nearly jumped up. I had to hold her head down a little so she didn't accidentally pop into the line of fire. "We know them!"
I turned my head trying not to lose all my focus, but I wanted to know what she was seeing. If it's people we know then they could help us hold them back. I saw a few people I didn't recognize at first until my eyes landed on Marlowe. They were running. When they saw the wall of guards in front of us they nearly all froze in place like a deer in headlights.
I could see the guards change their aim for a moment. "Petra cover them," I said before using my vines to grab them. I pulled them all towards us behind the barrier.
"Oh thank goodness, I thought we were toast," Marlowe let out a sigh of relief before looking at me. "Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes."
"I see guards are on you as well," one of the older men said.
"Yeah, we were having the same issue on our end. I couldn't hold them all back by myself so we had to retreat," the younger man said before realizing I didn't know who they were.
"I'm Leroy," he said before pointing at the other gentleman, "this is Santos."
"Nice to meet you," I said before turning my eyes back towards the guards who have resumed targeting us.
"So guards are coming from both ends?" Zahra asked."
"Yeah, some of them split off to harass other people, but I managed to hold them off for as long as I could.
"You were the only one who could hold them off?" I was not really sure about what their powers are.
"Yeah, I can make energy blasts and that's how I managed to hold them off for a while, but there were just too many of them. If I knocked them down they would just get back up.
"Any other powers that we should know about?" I asked, hoping Santos would tell me his power so I could see if I could work with it.
"I can also heal people," Leroy shrugged, "I'm assuming you already know Marlowe's power, and Santos doesn't have powers."
"Well I'll be damned it's my first time meeting another healer in a while," I smiled a little but also had to stop myself from sighing. Energy Blasts can help, but other than that we are totally screwed.
"What's going on?" Eld asked, trying to sit up. I heard Mike tell him to stay low. Well, good thing he's conscious now.
"If we can just disarm them all then we might have a better chance of stopping them. Hand-to-hand combat is looking like a better option right now," I said, feeling my wrists start to burn with how much I was using my powers. Honestly, if I didn't have this much adrenaline running through me and the pressure of knowing I was one of the only things standing between these guards and my friends I would have probably passed out already.
"I'm sorry baby," she just kept saying over and over again her voice getting weaker as she did.
"Ymir please, baby just hold on a little longer. Everything will be okay, we just need to find Hanji and everything will be okay," I kept trying to tell her, but she would just shake her head and continue apologizing.
"Listen to me, you have to get out of here, leave me here," she finally said her whole mood changing in an instant.
"What, no I'll never leave you," I said, grabbing onto her hand tightly making sure she knew I wasn't going to let her go.
"You have to, Gabriel just told me that guards have started attacking, they are getting closer. You have to leave before they get here or we will all die."
"But I can't just leave you here." Ymir's spirit guide is trying to help even in a time like this. I wish he could just go and grab Hanji, but he can't. It doesn't work like that.
"You have to. Please, Christa, I'm going to die anyway. There's no saving me. Hanji is busy holding off the guards she's not coming. She can't and you can't stay here."
"I don't care," I said, raising my voice. "I'm not leaving you here. I promised that I would get you out of this and I intend to keep my promise. Amalia, you don't have to stay with us. I don't expect you to stay here I know I'm being stupid staying, but you can still leave." I said turning to her. She didn't even seem to care one way or the other. Whether we both stayed here and died or we kept moving. She just looked so exhausted, almost like she was ready to give up.
"I'll stay with you both no matter what you decide," she said with a pained nod.
"No, tell her she's being stupid, make her leave," Ymir begged.
"Together until the end baby, remember," I said, leaning over and placing my forehead to hers. I felt her hand come up and weakly caress my cheek.
She pulled my head down into a passionate kiss before pulling away and looking me in the eyes. "I love you, you know that right?" She's asked me this question a million times, but none of them have ever felt this real.
"Yes of course I know that. I love you too, so so much which is why I'm not leaving."
"Good, you know I love you which is why I'm making it so that you have to," she said and I didn't have time to process what she was saying. "I'm setting you free baby, live for me," she said, and then before I could figure out what she meant she quickly raised her hand to her throat and swiftly ran the jagged piece of glass across it.
"No!" I screamed trying to pull her hand away, but it was too late. There was so much blood. As she was choking to death on her own blood she forced a smile. "No no no this can't be happening. Stop this. Help! Somebody help!" I tried to stop the bleeding but there was just so much blood. It was seeping through my fingers. Her choking stopped but the blood didn't.
"No one's coming," Amalia said quietly. "I'm sorry but she's gone," Amalia said, putting a hand on my shoulder, wincing as she did. "We need to go. Or what she did was all for nothing."
"But, I can't just leave her here. I promised- I promised I would get her out of this."
"Some promises you can't keep," Amalia said before lightly tugging on my jacket. "We need to go."
I tried to stand but I couldn't. I just kept falling back to my knees. I felt Amalia's hand on my shoulder pulling me even harder than before. I was about to apologize to her. I'm trying, I really am, but I can't get my legs to move. I looked up to apologize but she was in front of me with her arms at her side. I looked at my shoulder and there was nothing there. I definitely feel someone pulling at my shoulder. "Ymir?" I choked out and then I felt a hand brush up against my cheek as if it was wiping my tears away like she always did.
"Okay, I'll go, I get the message," I said trying to hold back my tears as I forced myself to my feet. I took a deep breath and gave Amalia a nod.
"We need to go," I finally said, prying my eyes away from Ymir's body and forcing myself to walk away. Forcing myself to leave her there. We started walking and thought we were heading in a safe direction, but I felt a hand on my shoulder pulling me back a little. I looked around and sure enough, it wasn't Amalia.
"Where do we go?" I asked. I felt a tap on my right shoulder and instantly turned to the right.
"This way Amalia. There's danger the way we were heading."
"How do you know that?" she asked.
"Ymir is guiding me," I said, not really expecting her to get it, hell I didn't get it myself. I mean I knew Ymir's powers had to do with the afterlife, and I've felt spirits touch me before, but never like this. It always just felt like a little pressure or a breeze of air, but this felt so real. I wonder if because her power dealt with the afterlife if her powers are affecting her spirit as well?"
We kept walking and I saw people in the distance. I felt a little push on my back. I felt like this was Ymir telling me to go to them. I did just that. I walked straight up to them and that's when I started to realize they were familiar faces. "Connie!"
"Christa?" He asked, turning around. "Christa!" He yelled before jumping up to his feet. "Thank god you're okay. Oh my god, you're bleeding," he said, seeing the amount of fresh blood on my hands.
"It's not mine," I said quietly. I couldn't pull my eyes away from my hands. I almost missed his next question but Ymir smacked my hands really hard and I looked back up at him.
"Whose is it?"
"Ymir's," I forced out quietly.
"Oh god, don't tell me she's..." his voice faded out.
"She killed herself because I didn't want to leave her," I said looking back down at her blood on my hands.
"She..." his mouth fell silent. I don't think he knew what to say, but then again I can't blame him I don't even know what to say.
"She's still harassing me even while dead," I said, trying to give him some hope. "She led me to you."
"She's-. Holy fuck what was that?" He asked, looking at his shoulder.
"Does it feel like a hand?"
"Yeah," he said, a little panicked.
"That's her."
"Hey Ymir," he said awkwardly. "I'm sorry."
"Whose with you?" I asked changing the topic.
"Hitch and Mina, I could use some help. Hitch is in a pretty bad position."
"I'll see what we can do. We have to get them out of here quick guards have started attacking." I told him before walking over to them to see if I could help.
"This way?" I asked him again.
"Mikasa, you went a little too far," Armin said, calling back. "Right here, move this rubble," he said and I came back a few steps and nodded. I waited until Armin was clear before I started moving the rubble.
"Someone's on the other side!" I heard a familiar voice say.
"I'm here to help!" I yelled back.
"Mikasa? Oh, thank god," I heard the voice say again and I was able to place it. It was Berthold.
"Berthold is anyone else with you?" I asked.
"Shadis, and Pixis," he answered.
"Alright, everyone back away from this wall in case it comes down," I said, warning them. I waited until I heard them yell back that they were clear before moving some more of the rubble. I managed to get through this area pretty easily. The rubble didn't come down at all. I guess this was more stable than it looked.
"Alright let's get you guys out of here," I said, gesturing for them to follow me out.
They came out and I saw the relief on their faces. "If you follow this path all the way down make a left, a right then another left there's a ladder there where Hanna Erwin and a few civilians are waiting.
"You found civilians down here?" Pixis asked. "Like actual civilians, not just rioters?"
"I found both rioters and civilians who were just in their homes minding their own business. I knew they didn't evacuate before we started the mission, but they didn't bother evacuating before setting off the explosions either.
"How could they care so little about their own civilians?" Berthold asked, shaking his head. I could see the rage behind his eyes. "I mean I know they see us as less than human, but they are just normal civilians who are mostly obedient to their outrageous demands, and yet they are down here with us. How many of them were killed because they couldn't be bothered to just evacuate a few houses."
"We always knew they were corrupt, but never to this extent," Pixis mumbled, "I don't think it matters what happens here today, I think we've already won the war."
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
"Well, it's one thing to bomb us and kill us, but their own civilians. I wonder how many people have already spread the news and how many videos are circulating? I mean think about it. This isn't just some small event they can sweep under the rug. They blew up, what, a whole city block?"
"Closer to four it looks like, even some of the residential areas," I corrected.
"They aren't going to be able to bury all this no matter how hard they try. They showed their true colors not just to us but to the whole world. You think people are just going to stand for that. If we don't take them down at this point their own civilians will."
