Freedom Fighters

The fortress loomed ahead as they crested the hill. The fortress, an impenetrable stronghold, undoubtedly holding vast amounts of darkness inside. The fortress, a dark and unforgiving place that a crazy group of friends are about to attack.

"Do you remember the plan?' asked a dragon with dark blue scales with silver streaks. "Um..." responded a smaller dragon with blue and forest green scales. "Oh vow look, ze child hasss forgotten! Again!" a basilisk with red scales laughs as he slithers over to the dragons. The smaller dragon growls and raises his wings to attack but is back by an extended arm. "Kalith, no. We cannot let him get to us." the bigger dragon says. "Ah Ssstorm, didn't sssee you zere. Ze darknesss of your ssscalesss blendsss into ze night ssso vell I asssumed ze voice vasss ze vind." said the snake, laughing. "Trebor, why must you annoy us with your jokes when we are within a few feet of the fortress." Storm asks.

The serpent looks at the fortress. "Oh...Zat is our target...?" He clears his throat and starts speaking in his normal voice. "Are you insssane you crazy dragon?! The three of usss can't beat it alone. This isss sssuicide! We're going to die! All three of usss!" Thebor proclaimed.

"We must stay and fight. We three are all that remain of the freedom fighters, it is our duty." Storm sighed. "No, it is our duty to leave and live to fight another day. It is our duty to recruit more who believe in freedom." Thebor countered. "How will we get more to join our cause if we ourselves will not fight?" "We will find a sssmaller target and ssstrike. This target isss a sssuicide wisssh." "If you do not wish to join then you may leave. But know this, if you do leave me, I will consider it as a betrayal and consider you as a traitor." At these words, Thebor stared at Storm and then at Kalith.

"You leave me no choice, my friend. I must leave, I have no wish to die on thisss day." Thebor looked at Kalith again. "Come child, you must leave while you can. I fear for you life and I would be dissstraught to see a young life extinguissshed so soon because of his father'sss ambition."

Kalith looked between Storm and Trebor. His father and adoptive uncle. "I must stay. I must fight. I must be brave. I must have courage. I will fight the darkness. I must do what my mother would have wanted me to do. We will emerge victorious." "Very well child. I admire your bravery and conviction, even though it may be misssplaced. I will respect your decisssion even though I believe it to be foolisssh." He looks at Storm and then his gaze lingers on Kalith. "Goodbye Ssstorm. May you learn if you sssurvive. Farewell Kalith. May you alssso sssurvive and live an adventurousss and long life, and may our pathsss crosss once again." The serpent turns and looks at the stars and slithers away.

After the basilisk fades from sight, Kalith turns to Storm. "Was he right? Is this a suicide mission?" Kalith asks slowly. "I do not know if he was right or wrong but we must do it, for your mother." He said. "For my mate." He added quietly. The then nod at each other and they charge into the fortress attacking the creatures of darkness and giving it their all.
