Chapter 1 ~ Expectations

(Y/n)'s Perspective

~ • ~

"Balance, balance, step forward, step backward, now repeat." The instructor repeated for the twentieth time. The books on my head that were once heavy felt like they weren't there anymore.

Posture was huge to my family, but I thought my posture was fine. Though, apparently I have to stand like there is a pile of books on my head and I can't drop them.

We were working on stairs, since that's where I struggle the most at working on my posture. Though, I really shouldn't have to be worried about posture on the stairs, you get down a lot faster a bit hunched over, looking at the steps, and barely gripping the rail.

Though, speed doesn't matter in the eyes filled with expectations. Those eyes, belong to my parents. The Mr and Mrs whom created me and my long gone brother.

At first, my parents didn't care about me, but when my brother disappeared, I had to be their masterpiece. So when I was 13, I got a complete makeover, because that's when my brother disappeared.

I miss him. I don't judge him for running away, my parents aren't the nicest or understanding when it came to our feelings.

"(Y/n). Put the books down and come here." My father said from the bottom of the stairs, I nod and carefully make my way down, keeping my posture. I stopped in front of them and patiently wait for them to say what they needed to.

"We're going to be on a trip to New York for business. We won't be here till after your first week of public high school. We hope you behave. As well as treat your new friends kindly." He said, I raised a brow.

"Friends?" My only friends were the poor kids in my old school who liked to run around outside and pick flowers instead of buying them. We'd stuff the flowers we picked in our socks and run home to show our parents. Though, my parents were never impressed.

"Yes. Friends. These girls go to your school and have very wealthy parents." He stood aside and there were four girls standing there.

One was about my height, brunette, short hair put in a bun, fake beauty mark by her right eye and she had dark brown eyes. The other girl had long blonde hair and blue eyes, she was thin and a bit flat, she also had a bright pink hand bag.

There was another blonde but her hair was in elegant curls, she clearly wore shoulder pads and wore the color red, reminding me of Heather Chandler. Finally, the other brunette. She had long straight her and two braids going back and disappearing in with the straight shiny brown.

"This is Heather, McKenzie, Kaylie, and Racheal." I nod. The first brunette was Heather, the first blonde was McKenzie. The second brunette was Kaylie, and the second blonde was Racheal.

"Well, it's nice to meet you." I give them a fake smile, hiding my frown. Why can't I choose my friends. I don't know these people.

"Well you girls can go upstairs and properly introduce yourself. Be nice (Y/n)." I frown, I was nice. Why does he have to tell me that? What if they're the mean ones?!

I let out a breath and nod, putting back on my smile and I lead them up to my room. They look around. I had a huge desk holding all my art supplies. I had a huge closet full of clothes and I had a big (f/c) bed.

"You have a nice room, it's even bigger than mine." Kaylie commented, taking a peak into the bathroom. They all followed. I had a vanity with all my makeup, I had all my face wash and medicine in the mirror cabinet and I had all my soaps in the shower. Towels in the closet.

"Hey girls, there's also this room." Attached to my room was another room. It had my workout stuff and a giant piano. Then leaning against true wall was a giant grandfather clock that my great great great great grandmother left for me, according to my family, she specified that.

"Woah." They said in unison. I smile proudly. Besides my desk, this was my favorite part of my room.

"It's beautiful but we need to give you a makeover if you're going to be hanging out with us." McKenzie declared, she was clearly the leader of the group. I gulped, I didn't really like the sound of that.

"Yeah, you're a pretty girl, so you need to know how to show and apply to it~!" Heather said, pulling me to the bathroom.

"I-I um... ok!" I, lacking much consent, agree too. Suddenly, I was shoved down onto my vanity chair and makeup was being applied to my face. It wasn't a lot, just mascara, eye liner, lipstick and lip liner.

They had an outfit out for me and left the bathroom, telling me to put it on. So I took off my hoodie and leggings and put on this beautiful rose printed skirt and black laced cropped top. I soon exit the bathroom and I was told to put on these black heeled flats I had.

They put me in front of a mirror and brushed my hair, braiding it then putting it in a bun.

"Now you're pretty enough to be seen with us!" Racheal declared, which stung a bit, but I tried my best to ignore the cloaked insult.

"We can take a walk now and talk about how school is going to be." McKenzie said, leading the way out and I was forced to follow, gripping my phone nervously.

I felt myself start to cry, they were so mean. I wash the makeup off my face and get ready to sneak out. It was in the evening and my bodyguard was outside my room. I just needed some time to myself. That's all.

I put on some shorts and a green top, tucking it in my shorts. I put on an old backpack I had that held my water, a pencil pouch, and my drawing notebooks. I tie my bed sheets together and throw it out the window. I climb out and make my way to the park.

I was never going to live up to my parents expectations, but I could always live up to my own.

Arriving at the park, I find a trail and walk it. I plug in my earbuds and listen to some music. I went a bit off the path and found a nice view, so I sat down and started drawing.

A few hours past when it started getting dark, I started to make my way back, but I couldn't find the trail. I started to mentally freak out.

"If my parents find out I snuck out again I'll be grounded for weeks!" I scream in my mind. I try to find my way when suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. I flinched and turn around to find a man in a colorfully polka-dotted suit and a top hat.

"Hello miss! What are you doing out here so late?" He ask, his voice childish and light hearted, it made me calm down.

"I was just walking the trail, trying to find somewhere to calm down and I guess I went too far off the trail because now I'm lost and I don't know where I am." I say, looking at him, hoping he could help me out. He beamed down at me.

"Well luckily for you I know the way out!" I smile gratefully.

"Oh really?! Thank you so much!" I was so happy I won't be getting in trouble today.

"No problem miss!" He started leading the way and I followed.

"My name is (Y/n)! Thank you for helping me sir!" I smile at him, he smiled back and he hugged me.

"It's lovely to meet you (Y/n)! I'm Splendorman!" He set me down, I giggled at his childish behavior.

"It's been a miracle meeting you Mr Splendorman! If I'm not back home soon I'll be grounded for life, for sneaking out again." I sigh, still feeling thankful.

"Why would you sneak out (Y/n)?" He asked, still leading me, looking at me as well as watching where he was going.

"I'm not really allowed to be myself at home. My parents want me to be perfect, they want me to have perfect posture, speak formally, and dress properly. I'm not really aloud to wear this type of clothing in public." I pinch my shirt then let it go and sigh.

"Why would they want you to be something your not?" He asked. I shrug.

"My parents are rich, all they care about is image. If I mess that up, I'll be in trouble and apparently cause trouble for them." I hold my sketch book tighter to my chest, feeling sad.

"I'm not allowed to have my own friends, or speak my mind, or get dirty." I watch my feet as we walked. It was silent for a few minutes.

"I can be your friend!" He declared, I look up at him.

"Really?! But my parents..." I start, but he finished.

"I'm not really allowed to be seen by humans, but I can be your friend and hangout with you when no one else is around! We can play games like hide and seek and tag and so many things!" He was getting really excited, and I had to admit, I was getting pretty excited to. Then I realized what he said.

"Wait. You aren't human? You look human." I said, but to be fair, he was a lot taller and paler than any human I've seen.

"Well I'm not, please don't freak out..." He said, a frown now on his face. I shake my head and hug his waist.

"No no no! Why would I freak out?! You're my friend now!" I say with a smile.

"Yay!" He hugged me then let me go after a while. "I'll visit you tomorrow then new friend! Get home safely!" He exclaimed, making me realize we were back at the park. I smiled and waved goodbye and went home. Making it back just in time for my butler to tell me dinner was ready.

"Thank you, Splendorman..." I whisper to myself as a smug smile rested on my lips as everyone looked at me suspiciously.
