Who Is He?
The next morning, Jessica woke up early so she could speak to Phillip. He was still asleep, so she laid awake waiting for him to wake up.
She was able to enjoy the sunrise through her window and she somehow felt calm about her decision. She then decided to use the restroom and brush her teeth. She wanted to be ready for the day.
Two hours later, Phillip began to wake up. He stretched and groaned as he sat up. He looked at the clock and realized he was late for work.
Jessica had her back to him so, he thought she was asleep. Jessica laid still, not wanting to let him know she was awake just yet.
Jessica closed her eyes when Phillip stood up from the bed. She knew he was going to take a shower. So she had time to mentally prepare for what was to come.
Phillip grabbed clean clothes then walked to the bathroom. He decided to take his time. He was already late anyway.
As he took a shower, Jessica sat up and fixed her pillows and got ready to confront her husband.
After some time, Phillip came out of the bathroom and was dressed. He was about to go over to the dresser to comb his hair when he noticed Jessica was up.
"Jessica, what are you doing up?" Phillip asked.
"I wanted to catch you before you left for the day." Jessica replied calmly. "I knew if I didn't catch you now, then I would miss my chance. I need to speak to you."
Phillip attention was all on Jessica; he raised an eyebrow then asked. "Alright, what is it that you need to speak to me about?"
"Our marriage." Jessica said simply.
"Okay?" Was all Phillip could say.
Jessica took a deep breath, looked Phillip straight into his eyes and said. "I want a divorce."
Phillip was shocked by what Jessica had said. His eyes were wide; he didn't think he would ever hear Jessica say she wanted a divorce. He knew he didn't love Jessica and had been more then willing to let her go. But his ego had prevented it. Now he was faced by it and it took him by surprise.
Phillip collected himself and said. "Is that so? Well, fine. You want a divorce. I'll give it to you. But don't expect me to give you any money for you and that thing you have inside you!"
Jessica hated when Phillip would call her baby a "thing". She usually got sensitive and would cry but she reminded herself that she needed to remain strong and not shed a tear for him.
"That's fine. I don't want anything from you." Jessica said strongly. "I'll just take my things that I own and I'll be on my way."
Phillip couldn't help but laugh. "Really? You don't want any money? How would you survive without money? How would you survive without me? Where would you go!? Who in their right mind would take in a pregnant fifty one year old who can't do nothing but lay on her ass all day!?"
Jessica anger rose to the surface; she was tired of Phillip's behavior. She sat up straighter and held her head up high.
"You know what Phillip, I'm done. I won't have to listen to your insults anymore after today!" Jessica said, her voice rising. "Sarah will be here later today to help me pack and I will be staying with her for a while. After that, I'm not your concern anymore! I thought you would be happy that I was moving out. Now you can move Mary in and you both could live happily ever after!!!"
Phillip eyes were wide again; how could Jessica know about Mary?
"Why...why are you bringing Mary into this?" Phillip asked nervously.
Jessica laughed humorlessly then said. "Why wouldn't I bring your mistress into this? Oh Phillip...I know all about Mary, your high school sweetheart. I've known for the past two years. You've been having an affair with her for the past ten years! You know...I've been keeping quiet about it because I did love you Phillip, with all my heart. When I found out, I managed to forgive you. In my mind, I rationalized it by thinking it was okay, because at least your were coming home to me." Jessica shook her head and continued. "But now...not anymore. I know you still have been seeing Mary behind my back and that that's where you've been while I'm here all alone all night waiting up for you. Don't look so surprised Phillip. This whole damn town knows you've been seeing Mary! Evan saw you with Mary the other night. A few others too! It's like you wanted to get caught! Then of course the gossip spreads like wildfire around here. You both thought no one saw you kissing each other at the bar but you were mistaken. I knew that you were seeing her and after Sarah told me what Evan saw, for some strange reason, I still kept my mouth shut. I still had a small bit of hope we could work out our marriage, but..."
Jessica angry and emotional so she couldn't stop the stream of tears that now rolled down her cheeks. One hand on her belly as she felt a faint cramp in her abdomen.
"...now that hope is gone." Jessica said as she pushed the small pain away. "I gave you my youth, I gave you your children and that still wasn't enough for you to love me! I never have cheated on you Phillip, and for whatever reason your mother thought I did. She even poisoned our daughter's mind with those lies. Little did she know that her father was the one that cheated and is still cheating!"
Phillip was quiet as Jessica spoke; he didn't know what to say. He wasn't even going to try to make up any excuses or empty promises that he would never do it again. There was no point, he was caught. Phillip decided then and there that he would let Jessica go. He knew it was the end.
"You're right." Phillip said with his arms crossed. "I have been having an affair with Mary for the past ten years. I still love Mary and I only married you because I got you pregnant. Before this madness of bringing that thing into this world, I was planning to leave you and I was going to move in with Mary. I was going to leave you everything. Mary was so upset with me when she found out you were pregnant. She knew I wouldn't leave you now. But, because I did stay I began to resent the...the baby. Because of them, I can't be with Mary."
Jessica closed her eyes; in a way she hated how honest Phillip was but she was glad he was. Now she knew the truth.
She then opened her eyes and said. "I'll have my things out of this house before you get back. Now you can move Mary into this house like I'm sure you've always wanted. Oh...I guess I'll tell you in person now because you will find out soon enough. Phillip, I'm seeing someone else. He and I have been seeing each other during book club and even when we don't have book club we've been together. He and I have gotten closer as the months went by and...he treats me with love and respect. Unlike you who has treated me like an inconvenience." Jessica took a deep breath and said. "I lied to you about moving in with Sarah and Evan. He and I are in love and I will be moving in with him."
Throughout their entire conversation, Jessica has been having small contractions, but she ignored them, thinking that they were caused due to stress. She prayed that everything would turn out smoothly in the end and she could finally be with Danny.
*Abigail's POV*
Abigail sat down in the living room going over what she had just heard her father say. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
She had come by this morning to check in on Jessica. Even though she didn't get along with her mother, she decided to come check in on her. She had a strange feeling when she woke up that morning and she felt the need to see her mother. She let herself into the house with her house key.
She had walked upstairs about to open her parents bedroom door when she heard her parents conversation. She stood outside their bedroom door and listened to their conversations.
Then she heard from her own father's mouth, that he was the one who cheated.
All her life, her grandmother had drilled into her head that her mother was the one who was promiscuous and had cheated on her father in a number of occasions.
But now, she found out that it wasn't true at all. Her mother has been innocent all this time.
Abigail sobbed; she felt so horrible for how she treated her mother almost all her life.
She was heartbroken; her father that she always looked up to and thought to be a hero to her was nothing more than a cold hearted lying cheater. Her father didn't even sound sorry at all his actions.
Abigail stayed seated on the sofa crying into her hands until she heard her father's yell coming from upstairs.
"Who is he?" Phillip yelled as he walked closer to Jessica. "Who is he, you whore!?"
Jessica didn't cower, she looked right into Phillip's eyes and said calmly. "Daniel Huston."
Phillip blood boiled and he saw red.
Jessica saw he was angry but she wasn't going to let him scare her. She was close to being free that she wasn't backing down.
"I don't why you are getting so upset, Phillip." Jessica said. "You were the one who has been cheating on me for the past ten years! I haven't! The only thing Danny and I have ever did was kiss."
Phillip knew in the back of his mind that she was right. He did cheat and he had no right to be angry over kissing but, Phillip felt this possessiveness towards Jessica. He never would have guessed that someone else would want Jessica. Jessica was a good wife, she took care of everything around the house and his mother. Yes, he did cheat and wasn't in love with her but, Jessica was his. He was no longer thinking rationally.
Phillip grabbed Jessica from the bed and pulled her up to stand in front of him. It was in this moment, that Jessica felt terrified. She had never seen Phillip this angry before.
"Phillip! Please stop!" Jessica said, tears rolling down her cheeks. Phillip's hands gripped Jessica's arms tightly. The contractions in her abdomen getting worse.
"You will not move in with Daniel Huston!" Phillip yelled into Jessica's face. "I won't allow this! Daniel Huston will not be raising my child!"
Jessica was shocked that he finally admitted she was carrying his child. Anger rose inside her and she said in raised voice. "Now this is your child?! When all these long months you've denied them. You've been calling them an it or a thing! How dare you claim them now after acting like a total asshole for so long!"
Phillip let go of Jessica and slapped her across her face; the force causing Jessica to fall on floor.
Jessica sobbed; she laid in the floor, a hand on her belly. Pain shot through her abdomen, it took her breath away.
Just then, the door flew open. Abigail took in the scene before her and saw her mother on the floor sobbing, trying to protect her belly, and her father towering over Jessica, looking as if he were getting ready to kick her mother.
"Daddy!" Abigail screamed as she rushed over to her mother. She comforted Jessica as best she could then looked up at her father. "How dare you hit her!"
"Abigail, it's not what you think." Phillip said. "You're mother is a whore! She has been seeing a man behind my back! She wants to divorce me! She wants to move in with the bastard!"
Abigail stood up and looked into her father's eyes. "I heard everything Dad. I heard you've been cheating on Mom with Mary for ten years! How could you dad!? All my life I looked up to you. You were my hero and now...now I want nothing to do with you! Now more so that you put your hands on Mom!"
Jessica screamed in pain as contractions began to take over. "Oh god, it hurts! No! It's too soon!" She said with gritted teeth.
"Mom!" Abigail exclaimed as she got back down the floor. She took her mother's hand and held it tightly. "It's going to be okay. I'm going to call an ambulance."
Abigail stood up and pushed her father away from her mother. "You stay the fuck away from my mother!"
Phillip too shocked to do or say anything just nodded stepped back. His daughters anger calmed him down immensely.
Jessica sobbed as the contractions were coming closer together. Abigail was on the phone with 911 and she kept an eye on her father, making sure he stayed away from her mother.
Jessica breathed through her contractions, but her eyes suddenly went wide. She looked down and her gaze was met by a puddle of water.
