Ep 18: Trying something new! Going Golfing
Okay so this short story is a bit... different from the others. It may be a little boring but I do recommend you guys should read it because it does cover some important details. Anyways hope you guys enjoy!
Free De La Hoya sat in a field of sunflowers meditating. Recently Free had discovered a beautiful public garden but he had wandered off a bit wanting some alone time.
Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath the world turned a jet black. The wind made the sunflowers brush up against Free but he ignored them. Focusing more and more that's when he saw what he needed. All around himself he could sense hundreds of glowing orbs of energy. Curious he was just about to touch when he heard the most peculiar sound.
It sounded like a crack or was it smack? Snapping Free out of his thoughts he heard a loud "FORE!" Through the trees he saw a white blur flying at him.
Ducking to the side the white blur hit the ground making a grave for itself. Free got up and went over to examine the object. He picked it up, it was a small white ball covered in mud. A little bit of color stuck out and Free wiped away the mud.
On the ball was a colorful Falcon that was hand drawn. Behind Free a tall and lengthy teenager slowed down to catch his breath. He had black charcoal hair and light blue eyes to contrast.
"I am so sorry I almost hit you. I got distracted by rustling in the woods and I accidentally sliced the ball."
"Nah, it's fine."
Free tossed the ball back to the boy and he fumbled to catch it.
"No it's not fine, trust me I've been hit by a golf ball before and it was not fine. The next day I had a bruise that turned all the colors of the rainbow at one point."
Oh so that's what that white blur was..
Free had never really considered other sports. It was always just Beyblade, from the minute he started blading he knew instantly this was his sport.
"I've got an idea on how I can make it up to you. How about the both of us play some golf tomorrow?"
"Ok.."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I've just never played golf before. I've heard of it but that's it."
"Oh, well I can teach you. Tell you what, meet me here tomorrow at the driving range at 7. It's this open place where people are lined up in a row and they practice drives and other club shots. Oh and I'm Michael, Michael Ryan."
"Free De La Hoya."
"That name...why does it sound familiar. This is going to bug me until I can figure it out. Well I guess I'll see you tomorrow."
The boy threw his ball into the short grass otherwise known as the fairway. He took out a shiny club and pretended to swing. Then lining up to the ball he smacked it.
The ball flew through the sky like a rocket. Then it gracefully landed near the flagpole also known as the green and pin.
Free had seen a lot of things in his time but this was something else. Usually he would discard important things but this felt like something he would want to consider. He was out in nature and he was still using his arms in a way he would with blading.
This game was also very mental and less physical kinda like blading. But the difference was in golf you're outside depending on the weather sometimes but for blading you can do it inside and out.
******
Early in the morning, Free walked past the garden and instead to the golf course. A beautiful sunrise painted the sky in warm colors to contrast the earth below.
Taking a turn Free walked into the entrance to the golf course. Surprisingly, lots of cars and people were around. Some were already playing and others were just finishing. It surprised Free a little about how many people were here already.
At BC Sol Free was usually the first one up always training and striving to get better. Back when Valt was first joined he too tried to keep up with Free's training schedule but eventually he found it better to sleep in.
Walking down the steps Free looked around. The driving range or whatever Michael called was definitely large. A few people were out this morning hitting balls into the field across from them. Above the driving range was another deck but it was roped off from the public. Based on what Free saw it was a slow morning at the driving range.
"Hey Free."
Free turned around and faced Michael. He wore a navy blue golf shirt and khaki shorts.
"I'm glad you came, let me show you why I enjoy this."
Setting down his large golf bag, he grabbed the biggest club out of his bag. Free had seen him hit the ball before but he had a feeling this was going to be different. Lining up to the ball Michael practiced the shot.
His weight shifted every so slightly and he looked very relaxed. His arms moved naturally and not at all stiff. But then when he hit it, it was a different story.
Michael slowly raised his club in the air, but then when he came back down Free barely saw the club. The club moved so fast he barely even saw it. There was a loud smack and the ball was sent flying through the air.
Such power..
For the rest of the day Michael taught Free the basics of golf like putting, chipping and driving.
Putting was pretty simple, it was basically like mini golf in a way. Sometimes after having a great victory Kris would take the team out for fun activities. One of them had been mini golf.
Valt and Rantaro would get so frustrated about not making puts it was funny watching them blow up. Meanwhile Cuza would always find some crazy way to get the ball into the hole.
Silas would always take his time unlike the other members which caused him to win. But Free didn't really care about winning, he just wanted to watch.
But for Golf, putting was different. There were no silly courses and obstacles, just long greens with a single hole and flag.
"You see Free looking at the green from this viewpoint it looks very easy doesn't it?"
Michael set down his ball onto the short grass. He hit the ball towards the hole but instead of it going straight it curved a little.
"You know it took me a while but I remember why you're familiar. My brothers love Beyblade, he would talk about you so much it drove my parents crazy until they couldn't stand it."
Both Free and Michael were quiet for a few moments. Free could tell Michael had brought up a touchy subject. But he didn't want to press on.
"As I was saying, think of the green as the bey stadium. Unlike the bey stadium the green can be unpredictable."
"Sometimes the ball will come up short, other times it'll go too far. It's all about judgement, good judgement can get you far. I'm sure you know that from blading."
After Michael's little speech they both practiced some putting drills. After a while they both got bored of it and moved onto chipping.
Chipping was a bit harder, unlike putting the required a bit more power and skill.
"In chipping you want to take your most lofted or angled club. Sometimes you'll land near the green and sometimes you won't. This too requires good judgement, if the ball lands on the fringe or the part of grass that separates the green and fairway then you probably want a small chip. Like this."
Michael swung his club a little and the ball landed near the pin. Free tried the same thing with the same result.
"Not bad,"
Driving was the most interesting category of golf to Free. Taking that big club and letting his power lose reminded him of blading a little. In a way the golf ball was like the Beyblade and the launcher was the club.
Free was actually the best at driving, driving required power and no limitations which he fully understood from blading.
"Driving is also about being smart, yes you will come to a course where you do not need all that power. Instead you would have to think carefully about what you're doing before you do it. Like if the fairway is slanted to the right then you'll want to hit it to the left. It isn't just about power like blading it's about having fun. But I can relate to you. Free, I have fun being serious out here."
By the time it was almost dinner Free had a basic idea of golf and he seemed to appreciate it more. Golf was very similar to blading in a way but golf could never be blading.
After their training for the day they both grabbed a snack at the clubhouse. Michael headed home and Free exited the golf course.
Behind those bored eyes Free was actually a bit excited for tomorrow's fun.
