A dead man walking

Maurice's POV

"You let him escape?" I frowned clenching my fist angrily.

"Sir, I swear I haven't seen Tommy for hours. I don't know what persuaded him to leave but I'm sure it was important or he wouldn't have left."

"I doubt that. Your his father you'd do anything to keep him safe even cover his tracks." I replied with a growl. "Take this man away I don't ever want to see his face again!"

"Yes sir!" My other men replied as they dragged Tommy's dad away.

"Please sir have mercy." Tommy's dad begged as he was being dragged away. He knew what fate awaited him not only him but his entire family and it terrified him.

"Mercy? You want me to have mercy when my daughter is fighting for her very life and your son is conveniently no where to be found?"

"I love Catrina as if she were my own daughter. I swear to you on my mother's grave that I will do everything in my power to help you find whoever did this to her." Tommy's father pleaded and I raised my hand the men dragging him away paused.

"And if Tommy is found to be responsible?" I asked calmly.

"Then He's a dead man walking." Tommy's dad replied.

"But He is your son." I replied
questioningly.

"He's no son of mine. As far as I'm concerned, he lost that privilege the moment he became suspected of hurt your daughter. She is the families little princess and anyone who would do something like this to her is a monster and isn't fit to live." Tommy's father replied.

"Release him. When you find your son I expect you to keep your word. If he is the one who hurt my daughter then he dies."

"Yes of course." Tommy's father replied with a sad sigh.

"Boys."

"Yes sir?"

"He's not just to shoot him. Make sure he gives his son a nice long bath."

"A bath? I don't understand...." One of the men said looking puzzled.

"Tommy has been a dead man walking since the moment Catrina was brought to this hospital."

"What if he's innocent?"

"Innocent men don't run."

"So what's so bad about a bath?"

"When the boss says make sure he gets a nice bath it's a bath of a different nature. A bath you never want to find yourself in the misfortune of having to take." Anthony my father's second in command explained to the new kid.

"You mean???" The man made a slit across the throat motion and Arthur nodded. "What of his brother and father?"

"They are either with us or against us. If they are smart it the first choice. If not, and they are found to be aiding in his being able to avoid capture then they too will have the misfortune of enjoying a nice long bath." Arthur replied and the man gulped.

"Remind me never to get on the boss's bad side."

"You won't need a reminder. The boss doesn't give second chances. He's not a forgiving man. If he even suspects you might betray him your as good as dead."

"Is it true what I heard? The boss's little girl is fighting for her life?" One of the men whispered.

"Yes."

"I heard that the youngest son of the Seaside family is to blame for the girl's current status and the boss has ordered that the entire family be sent to the baths." Another whispered.

Meanwhile, while my father's men gossiped and chattered like old women or a flock of geese my father paced the hallway of the hospital. "What's taking so long?" He growled clenching his fists.

"Excuse me, Mr. Bendito Sir?" A Nurse said nervously approaching my dad.

"Yes?" I replied whirling about to face the nurse. "Confound it Women? What is it? Spit it out!"

"Your daughter is back in her room sir. The transfusion process went smoothly. Your wife asked me to send for you." The nurse replied.

"Why didn't you say so before!!!" I replied heading in the wrong direction.

"Sir..." The nurse said timidly.

"What???" I demanded with a growl.

"Your daughter's room is this way." The nurse replied pointing down the opposite hallway.

"Well then lead the way." I replied with a wave of his hand.

Catrina POV

I hadn't woken up after my blood transfusion. I could hear what was going on around me but for some reason i just couldn't find the strength to open my eyes. I could hear my mom crying. "My poor baby. I'm so sorry sweetheart. This is all my fault and I'll never forgive myself. The doctor's say you might not survive the night.
Please prove them wrong. Please wake up sweetheart."

"Crystal."

"Oh Maurice what if she never wakes up? I'll never forgive myself. Or all those horrible things I said to her. What if the last thing she remembers about me is my wishing she'd never been born?"

"Shhh. You mustn't think like that. I'm sure she's going to be fine."

"The doctor's have been asking about if we'd be willing to donate Catrina's organs. They say she is in a coma that she most likely won't recover from. That she could save a lot of lives." My mom sobbed and my dad's face grew dark.

"Catrina will be fine. Why don't you go down to the cafeteria and get yourself something to eat. I'll let you know if anything changes." My father replied. My mom started to argue but one look from my dad and she shut her mouth and nodded.

"Ah Mrs. Bendito have you had a chance to make a decision concerning what we discuss earlier?"

My father glared at the doctor. "The answer to your question is no."

"Sir, we are just trying to prepare you for the inevitable." The doctor replied.

At this, my father grabbed him by the collar and pushed him up against the wall. "I don't appreciate you upsetting my wife! She's been through enough without you bantering her about our daughter's organs. Our daughter is going to be fine so we don't need to consider anything. Now quit wasting my time and do the job your paid to do!"

"Sir, we have done all we can. If she doesn't wake up within the next twenty four hours it is likely she won't wake up at all." The doctor replied causing my mom to start sobbing all over again.

My dad'd eyes flashed with anger causing the doctor to start trembling. "You had better pray that your wrong Doctor because if my baby girl  dies your family will pay the price. Now GET OUT!" He growled and the Doctor quickly rushed from the room.

"What if he's right Maurice? What if she never wakes up?" My mom asked worriedly.

"I wouldn't listen to that doctor he's an incompetent idiot! He doesn't know our baby girl. She is a fighter. Don't worry I am certain that she will recover. Now go get something to eat and some rest. I will sit would her and will call you if there are any changes."

"But..."

"Crystal." My father replied a hint of warning and irritation in his voice. My mom knew better then to argue with father when he spoke in that tone of voice and so she hurried out of the room.

I found myself dreaming. I was at pre-school. My classmates had been making fun of me again and so I sat in the classroom alone trying not to cry. Uncle Freddy walked in and sat down next to me. "What's wrong Kitten?" He asked but I didn't reply at first. "Are the other kids teasing you again?" I nodded. "Would you like to go with me on an adventure?" I looked up at him confused. "Promise not to tell anyone?" I nodded. "I found a special cave filled with treasures beyond your wildest imagination. Would you like me to take you there?"

"Would you?" I asked my eyes lighting up for the first time that day.

"Of course kitten but you must promise me you will never tell anyone about the special cave or anything we do while in there ok?" Freddy asked with a smile.

"Ok." I replied. The dream changed and Freddy and I were walking down the hallway of the school. Freddy opened a door and disappeared and I called to him. "Mr. Kruger?"

"Down here kitten." He called sweetly. I started down the stairs but hesitated because the further I went the darker it became and I was and still am afraid of the dark.

"Mr. Kruger , I'm scared. It's dark in here." I whimpered.

"Don't worry it will get brighter once you've gotten down the stairs kitten." Mr. Kruger replied.

"Please stop. Your hurting me." I moaned and I began to toss and turn in the hospital bed.

"Nurse! Confound it where is everyone? I need a nurse in here now!!!" My dad growled. When no one appeared within a few minutes my dad balled his fists and went in search of someone who could help me.

"Can I help you sir?" A nurse who was sitting behind a desk asked as he approached her desk.

"Yes! You can tell me why I'm still waiting for someone to come check on my daughter when I pushed her help button ten minutes ago! Why is no one doing their job around here?"

The nurse frowned and looked around. There were no CNA (certified nurse's assistant) around. "I'm sorry sir, this is very unusual but we are very understaffed tonight. I'll send someone to your daughter's room as soon as possible."

"That's not good enough!" My father replied angrily. Meanwhile, back in the room I was still tossing and turning.

In my dream I watched as Mr. Kruger re-zipped the back of my dress and I looked up at him nervously. "Mr. Kruger."

"Yes Kitten?" He asked looking down at me with a smile.

"Are our special games always going to hurt?" I asked tearfully.

"Not always." Mr. Kruger replied pulling me into a hug.

"Mr Kruger?"

"Yes Kitten?"

"Can we stay here? The other kids are mean and the teacher doesn't care."

Mr. Kruger looked at his watch and sighed. "Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to allow you to stay here with me for the rest of the day it's time to leave the secret cave."

"Will I get come back again soon?"

"Are you sure you want too? After all, you said you didn't like the games we played." Mr. Kruger replied sounding sad and disappointed.

"I'm sorry Mr. Kruger. I didn't mean to upset you. I like being with you." I replied quietly.

"But you don't like the special games that I invented just for you. Maybe I'll bring Nancy here instead. I'm sure she'll enjoy the games." Mr Kruger replied knowing that this comment would upset me. And upset it me did I let out a deep growl.

"No! This is our special place! They are our special games!" I replied with a frown folding my arms across my chest. "She can't come here! She can't." I replied tearfully.

At this, Mr. Kruger chuckled. "Shh. Don't cry Kitten, I won't bring Nancy to the secret cave. It's our special little place." He said with a smile.

"Promise?"

Mr. Kruger didn't reply instead he picked me up and we headed upstairs. "Remember, the games we played today must remain a secret. Other people would not understand especially other adults ok?" I nodded and Mr. Kruger smiled. "That's by good little Kitten. I can't wait until we have a chance to play again." He said with a wink and a smile. The smile was creepy and I shivered and woke up sitting up in the bed.

"Where am I? Mommy? Daddy?" I called but didn't receive an answer. "Mommy!" I called and when I didn't receive an answer I started crying. I didn't know where I was or how I had gotten there and I wanted my mommy and daddy.

The nurse looked up from the desk as beeping sounds came from her monitor. "Oh dear... Paging Dr. S, paging Dr. S please report to room 34A immediately!" She called over the loud speaker.

"What's going on?" My father demanded as he watched several nurses rush about grabbing different items before heading in the direction of my room. My father followed quickly behind but was blocked when he reached my room.

"I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid you can enter the room right now." A nurse replied blocking the door.

"This is my daughter's room I demand to be allowed to enter! Now step aside!" My father replied angrily.

"I'm afraid that's not possible right now. I'm under specific orders to not allow anyone into this room. Now please leave before I have to call security."

"Orders from who? You know what, I don't care! If you want to keep your job then I suggest you get out of my way!" My father replied with a growl. Trying to force his way into the room.

"Security!" The nurse yelled and two men came around the corner.

"You called ma'am?"

"Please escort this man out and make sure he isn't allowed to re enter this Hospital."

"As you wish ma'am." The men replied grabbing ahold of my dad and pulling him down the hall.

"What is the meaning of this?"

"We are sorry for the disturbance ma'am. We will have this man out of the building momentarily." The guard replied.

"Out of the building? Don't you know who this is? I am so sorry Mr. Bendito sir. I'll see to it that something like this never happens again." The nurse said glaring at the guards.

The security guards looked at each other nervously and let go of my dad quickly. "Mr. Bendito ?  As in..."

"As in the owner of this facility, yes." The head nurse replied with a nod. "Now would you care to explain why you were escorting him out of the building?"

"He was causing a disturbance near a patient's room. The nurse asked us to make sure he was escorted from the building and to ensure that he not regain entry under any circumstances. We were only following orders. We are so sorry Sir. I promise I'll make sure this never happens again."

"Quit your sniveling. I have bigger fish to fry. I should fire you all right now. However, you could prove useful. Follow me." My father replied as he headed back towards my room once more.

Meanwhile, back in my room I awoke completely confused and scared. "Where am I? How did I get here? Who are you? What are you doing to me? I want my mommy and daddy!" I screamed at the doctor.

"Shh. Calm down child."

"No! Me want me mommy and daddy! Me want  me mommy and daddy?!" I yelled at him. The doctor nodded to the nurse who held a needle in her hand. "You stay away fwom me. Stay aawa..." Before I could finish my sentence she had inserted the needle and I started feeling sleepy.

The doctor turned to the nurse and frowned. "I thought you had taken care of this patient."

"I swear, I gave her the prescribed medication. She should have never woken up." The nurse replied nervously. "Please don't write me up sir."

"I'll  think about it. Why don't you go about your rounds I'll finish up with this patient." The doctor replied. As soon as the nurse had left the doctor's phone rang. "Yes sir? No sir, I'm afraid that his little brat actually woke up. Yes sir. No sir, I understand sir. I won't let you down Mr. Monster sir. I will see to it personally.  You have my word the little brat won't wake up again." The doctor replied.
