EDIT: Seriously, I often use references. Actually all the time. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T NOT USE ONE. Even if you're creating a SPECIES on your own, you at least are inspired in terms of anatomy, like maybe making the arms the same length or the size of the head compared to the rest. It's physically impossible to not reference from anything since every idea you have is something your brain makes out of different impressions, sights and so on. So, basically, everyone uses references, even though they might just be in your head. So, everyone who ever said, it's not good to use references, SHUT UP. You can't develope a good art style if you get no inspiration!
