To Tame A Beast
The academy of Roxelt's was a very intricately put together and highly defensible structure; many would've called it a fortress. One of the many defense features that kept it at the top of the list of highly acclaimed academies was its internal warding aura, which acted as an alarm system for whenever a high level battle magic spell was used it would alert all the nearby faculty.
So when Bonita first felt the slight ping of the warding letting her know that a battle spell had been used, she wrote it off quickly. It wasn't out of the ordinary for a battle spell to be used from time to time in an academy of magic with overachieving students. But then she felt the ping again and again, the annoying ping made her eye twitch.
Clutching the amulet that hung around her neck she whispered an incantation, "Cerebra lingua."
This is Instructor Rose responding to the warding alert, are there any other faculty members in the area?
Cerebra lingua, a type of telepathy magic. It would send out your voice mentally in a certain short radius to anyone who held an Amulet of Conligo. All the faculty members of Roxelt's kept the amulet on their person in case of emergencies.
Rose? It is I, Instructor Cremlin! How may I assist you?
Bonita rolled her eyes, of all the plus fifty faculty members who circulated through the halls of Roxelt's it had to be the one who annoyed her the most. It was obvious to all the other instructors that Cremlin had quite the schoolyard crush on Bonita ever since they'd met; sadly Bonita didn't feel a thing for the poor muscle bound man.
There's a disturbance in the lower west wing, I'm going to investigate. Could you-
I shall accompany you! There no way I could let a gentle woman such as you enter harm's way. My manly honor won't allow it.
"You sexist trash!" Bonita blurted out loudly, startling a few passing students. "What are you looking at? Go to your dorms!" With a frustrated sigh she straightened herself out and resumed.
I can handle myself. Could you go and inform Headmaster Noetal.
But you-
You may come when you have finished informing Headmaster Noetal, now go!
"Though by then I'm sure I'll already have the situation handled," Bonita soliloquized as she rushed down the corridor in the direction of the blaring alarm. "Just when I thought the day was going to be bland, smacking around a few hardheaded students will definitely put a nice turn to this day."
Though when she neared the lower west wing library her grin began to fade as thick clouds of smoke assaulted her, making her eyes water which ruined her perfectly penciled mascara. Biting back a curse she trampled against the smog. Poking her head through the cracked open doors, she accessed the ongoing damage to the old library. Books lay scattered about; some were on fire while a few had a thin layer of ice on them.
"Clear signs of battle magic," Bonita said as she crouched to get a better look. "Whoever did this is in big trouble!" She called out, hoping to frighten the little overachieving students out of hiding.
A roar rippled from somewhere deeper in the room that made Bonita hop out of her skin, the sound reverberated all around making her shiver slightly.
"By the gods!" Bonita blurted.
She turned and hesitantly rushed in the direction of the sound, silently wishing she hadn't foolishly refused Cremlin's help. She hastened her steps when she spotted a figure slumped on the ground; she stooped low to see who it was.
"Jaclyn! What in divines name happened here?" She tilted Jaclyn's small chin up to look into the girls blue eyes, tears flowed over her pale cheeks.
"J-Jack attacked... He wouldn't listen to me-" Jaclyn began to blubber, but was cut off by another skin crawling roar.
"Jack? That doesn't sound like Jack to me, where is he?" Bonita's eyes focused on a bloody mark on the girls' forehead. "Damn, that doesn't look good." She tenderly moved the girls silver hair to the side to get a better look.
A few bookshelves down the aisle there was a small explosion, followed by shouting and the cries of a large beast. Bonita shielded Jaclyn from the scattering debris, barely having enough time to throw up a warding shield to block a few jagged wood splinters.
"It's like a bloody war zone in here!" Bonita turned back to Jaclyn; the girls large blue eyes were barely open. "Fuck!" She grasped Jaclyn's shoulders and gave her a shake, "Hey! Stay awake, you probably have a concussion."
"N-Not... I'm so sorry Mason." Jaclyn sobbed.
"Mason? Wait, what has he to do with this?!" Bonita shouted into Jaclyn's face.
Jaclyn just flinched away, her bottom lip quivering. Bonita gritted her teeth and was about to shout again until she noticed how quiet the room had gotten.
"M-Mason..." Jaclyn said as she looked beyond Bonita, just over her shoulder actually.
"What?-Oh fuck," Bonita turned around slowly, and then craned her neck to look at the beast towering over her. "Mason?" she gulped. "Is that you?"
A beast of unimaginable proportions stood before them, it was larger than a bear. Its fur was jet black, making it look like a grotesque standing shadow. A feverish burn mark that looked like an upside down pine tree was pulsating with purplish veins; the mark sat near the center of its chest and seemed to spread by the second. Its boiling red eyes glared down at Bonita, then lifted the boy it had clutched in its clawed hand.
"M-Mason..." Bonita stuttered. Beginning to feel a sensation she hadn't felt in years, fear, she steeled herself and stood up straight. "Mason, put Jack down. Now!"
"You heard her puppers," Jack wheezed, his left eye turning purple from a bruise. "Be a good boy and put me- ACK!"
The beast tightened its grasp around Jack throat, causing him to spasm. It growled at Jack then opened it mouth, showing off a set of white jagged fangs. In a fluid movement it reared its head back and snapped its jaws in front of Jack's face.
"Mason, No!" Bonita screamed, "Don't kill him, you aren't a murderer."
The beast stopped just short of digging its fangs into Jack, then looked down at Bonita as if contemplating whether she was right or not. Then its red eyes slid back to Jack, who had fainted after relieving himself due to fright. A wide grin quaked onto the beasts face and it began to rear back again, its fangs more than eager to crunch through the boys windpipe. But then a small hand landed on its chest, just to the side of the curse mark.
"It's okay now, let him go." Jaclyn said as she looked up into the creatures burning eyes. She had gotten back on her feet, though her legs wobbled slightly threatening to collapse beneath her.
Bonita was preparing herself to launch into attack, she had no doubt that the monster would swat them away like flies then tear into Jack like a Christmas present. But to her surprise the beast complied, it dropped poor Jack like a sack of potatoes. A bloody, bruised, and slightly covered in urine sack of potatoes.
"Thank you." Jaclyn let out a breath, and then ran her hand through the beast's thick black fur. The beast leaned in slightly to Jaclyn's touch, a soft rumbling sound coming from its throat.
"What the f-" Bonita began but then was interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps.
"A monster!" A voice shouted, "Back away from the child you beast! Fulgur Catena!"
"Wait, he isn't a threat-" Jaclyn tried to throw herself in front of the beast to block the attack, but it drew her behind it to take the attack head on.
A bright light flashed, and then suddenly the beast was on his knees as glowing chains sparked to life around him. The beast howled in pain as the chain began to electrocute him as he struggled, until the wolf beast melted to the form of a naked boy still bound in chains.
"Oops, did I just mess up something?" Cremlin asked as he scratched his head.
"You are a fucking moron." Bonita huffed in reply. "Devin is going to be pissed."
