Thrills and Chills
What happened next was so fast Mason could barely comprehend it, the woman named Helen dove towards Jaclyn with her claws elongated and more than ready to tear through her delicate skin. Mason snapped out of his stupor as he registered the danger that Jaclyn was in, that they were both in.
"Who the hell is Wogan, Mason?" Jaclyn gasped as she dodged the crazed woman's attack. She flicked her wrist and her wand materialized into her hand.
"Straight up bad news, he's the asshole who put this curse mark on my chest." Mason pointed at the festering mark on his chest. "Hurry, open this damn cage- Look out!"
Jaclyn barely had enough time to duck as three daggers flew towards her face, one managed to slice across her cheek making a waterfall of blood rush down the side of her face. Helen tilted her head and sniffed the air and began to cackle, "Yummy, your blood smells sweet. I wonder how sweet your flesh taste!" She rushed towards them, a hunger in her intense eyes.
"Gelus flatus!" Jaclyn shouted, as she spoke her spell a chillness swept the air and an ice block the size of a fist shot out of her wand and crashed into Helen, sending her reeling. But that didn't keep her down for long, she did a quick back flip to dodge another of Jaclyn's ice blocks.
"Witch!" Helen hissed, holding her mid-section where the icicle hit her. "Want to play dirty huh?" She then crouched down to all fours, the air around her seemed to waver like a heat wave. "Then let's play dirty!" Her voice came out deeper as her body began to contort and the sound of bones snapping out of place filled the room.
"What is she doing!?" Jaclyn backed up against Mason's cell.
"She's shifting, hurry get the bars-" Mason began but was cut off as Helen let of an ear splitting sound. A sound in between a howl and nails on a chalkboard, it caused both Mason and Jaclyn to clutch their ears. "Holy shit, she's a Lupine!"
Helen finished her transformation, her form differed drastically from Mason's. While in werewolf form Mason was a beast of massive muscles and stood on two feet. Helen's form, a Lupine, was a quadruped. She basically looked like a man-sized wolf suffering from skin cancer with pasty gray skin and had spotty patches of reddish fur. What she lacked in bulging muscle, she could more than made up with her speed.
"T-that's grotesque!" Jaclyn said in revulsion. Then without a moment's hesitation she spun around and grabbed the bars of Mason's cell. "Gelus!" In an instant, ice emitted out of her hands and covered the bars.
"Don't turn your back on a hungry beast, little girl!" Helen screeched as she reached out and grabbed a handful of Jaclyn's silver hair, she tugged hard and yanked her away from Mason's cage.
The sheer force of the pull lifted Jaclyn off of her feet as Helen slammed her back on the ground like a rag doll. Jaclyn rolled back on her feet and threw up a magical barrier just as Helen pounced on her, she grunted with effort as the wolf beast slashed down upon her shielding.
Mason grabbed his cell bars and began to tug them apart, but they wouldn't budge. He seemed to lack the strength required to pull the iron bars apart, sadly Jaclyn's freezing spell hadn't worked all the way through to make the bar more brittle.
He needed more strength and there was only one way he knew he could gain immense power in little time, he had to initiate a shift. Though he'd never shifted on command before, he knew he'd have to shift if he was going to be any help to Jaclyn at all.
So he dug into himself and urged his inner wolf to emerge, but there was nothing. He tried again and again, but it was like trying to dig to the bottom of a sandbox with a fork. His inner wolf wasn't there, could it be because he had just shifted so recently? He didn't know. There was nothing he could do now.
So he just stared, his eyes wide open as Jaclyn's shield shattered and Helen slashed at her with her razor claws, Jaclyn lifted her arms in a feeble defense. Helen's claw sliced clean through Jaclyn's soft flesh, blood sprayed from the wound causing her to scream while Helen giggled with glee.
"Dammit! Leave her alone!" Mason roared helplessly as he banged his shoulder against the cell door. "You want me, not her!"
His pleas were ignored as the two women were completely focused on their battle, Jaclyn would shoot out more ice shards to which Helen would easily evade. The ice shards lodged themselves into the floor and ceiling freezing the area wherever they touched, even Mason was beginning to feel his jaw chattered from the chill in the air.
Helen was far more agile now that she had shifted and could have easily rendered Jaclyn to shreds, but it seemed she was having fun as she slowly broke down Jaclyn's defenses and stamina. A sickening wide smile on her face as she dashed from floor to ceiling and down on Jaclyn with her claws eager to sliced through flesh, it reminded Mason of a cat toying with a mouse. Or to be more accurate, a wolf pouncing on a defenseless deer.
Even though the battle seemed ridiculously one sided, Jaclyn still kept her chin high and bit her lower lip in pure concentration as she kept firing ice shard after ice shard. Mason was awe-struck by her determination, his heart fluttered as he watched her twirl and pivot to dodge Helen's attempts to target her vitals. Even though Jaclyn managed to keep Helen from causing her serious damage, she still looked worse for wear. Sweat dripped from her sharp chin, she panted heavily as her lungs strained to keep up with her, and her school uniform was a bloody mess. Small cuts and purplish bruises covered her body, while Helen seemed to heal almost instantly from each stab wound from the ice shards.
"Just give it up, you Elsa wannabe." Helen hissed, her wolfish grin never leaving her lips. "You do know that I've been playing with you right? I could've sliced your pretty throat ten times over by now."
Jaclyn just fired another freezing icicle at her in reply, a sly grin slid over her face even though the icicle missed Helen by a large gap. Her aim was getting worse due to her exhaustion. Just what was she thinking?
"Jaclyn! Please you have to-" Mason began but halted when he saw Jaclyn lift a hand in a slow arching movement.
"Its fine, Mason." Jaclyn panted, her breathe coming out in wisp due to the chill in the air. "I've got her right where I want her."
Helen snarled at Jaclyn's words, "Enough of these games, you die now!" She crouched low for a moment then launched herself towards Jaclyn, like a torpedo being fired from a submarine. She had Jaclyn dead to rights, Mason could only stare in horror as Jaclyn just stood there.
What happened next seemed to happen in super slow motion. While Helen was still airborne as she soared towards Jaclyn with her claws outreached, Jaclyn twirled her arms around in a fluid motion and gyrated her hips like belly dancer before slapping her palms together. Once she slapped her hands together a blinding blue light erupted all around her, the ice shards that had been lodged in the walls and ceiling broke themselves free and floated in the midair.
Helen's claws were mere centimeters away from Jaclyn's face at this point, but Jaclyn's eyes were closed and her expression seemed calmer than it ever had been before.
"Gelus locilus!" Jaclyn shouted as she snapped her eyes open.
The ice shards that had been defying gravity all snapped rigid still before they all redirected themselves towards Helen, the woman barely had any time to react as the ice shards crashed into her on all sides. They kept piling into her, until they covered her completely, from head to toe. Helen's body was now fully frozen and smacked down on the ground with a heavy thud.
Jaclyn looked up at Mason, her eyelids drooping low due to sheer exhaustion. "I told you I had it handled."
Mason just looked at her numbly. "Wow, and here I thought you needed me to save you..."
"If there's one thing you need to know about me, it's that I'm no one's damsel. I can save myself." Jaclyn said in a huff.
Her legs wobbled underneath her, threatening to drop her at any second. But instead of collapsing she pushed herself forward to lean on the bars of Mason's cell. She gripped the bars and instantly they began to freeze over and break apart. She then flopped down to the ground in a heap, completely unconscious before she even hit the floor.
"Uh, Jaclyn? Jaclyn wake up!" In a panic Mason kicked down the remaining brittle bars, then tugged himself though the freshly made gap. He cradled Jaclyn in his arms, placing two fingers on the side of her neck to check her pulse. Thump, thump, thump. It was there, she was still alive.
Mason sighed in relief and tugged off his shirt and proceeded to tear it into shreds. Jaclyn may have won the fight, but she was still covered in countless cuts and bruises. Mason focused on the most critical injuries, using his torn shirt as a make-shift bandage.
"Your shirt is off..." Jaclyn said, she voice slurred. "You always find a way to get naked around me don't you?"
"I'm using it to wrap your injuries, s-stupid!" Mason blushed. "Get that pretty head of yours out of the gutter."
With a snail's pace, Jaclyn lifted her hand and covered Mason's. A faint smile crept over her lips as she looked up into his warm hazel eyes. "You called me pretty... Thanks."
Her voice was barely a whisper. Using so many spells at once had really worn her down. Still her sapphire eyes twinkled when Mason stared into them, again he felt that irresistible tug between them. He angled his head downward, their lips were mere centimeters away from each other's. Her sweet scent filled his nostrils, making his heart flop in his chest like a fish out of water. He wanted her more than anything in the world at that moment, this feeling he was feeling was more intense than simple lust. It was something more, something far more defined and far far more complicated.
"I really want to kiss you right now..." Mason said softly.
"What's stopping you?" Jaclyn cooed.
At that very moment the chambers door burst open, causing both Mason and Jaclyn to jump in surprise.
"What now!?" Mason blurted, he was seriously not in the mood for another Helen to kick down the door again.
"Mason! Jaclyn! Are you alright?" It was Tobias. "Holy shit, it's freezing in here."
He looked like had a fight with a blender, his uniform was in tatters and bruises decorated his brown skin in purplish hues. He had his staff in his hand, using it to support most of his weight. Mason had only seen the staff a few times, a knobby looking tree branch with a bulbous green orb at the top. Usually it looked pretty underwhelming, but right then it was pulsating pure magical energy. Thick tendrils of green energy wrapped the staff completely and slivered halfway up Tobias's left arm like a ghostly slimy green octopus.
"Yes!" Mason called back. "We are fine."
Tobias let out a sigh of relief. "Good, because the academy isn't..."
"What do you mean?" Jaclyn inquired.
"The academy is under attack..." Tobias glanced over to Mason. "An army of werewolves have begun assaulting the academy, it's like a war out there."
