Chapter 3 - Stirkel
Of course. Just my luck that my eyes open while I'm still in the air. Why can't I just wait till I hit the ground? The large expanse of green got bigger and bigger. The world was unfolding. 3, 2, 1... Now! The shock jolted through my body as I hit the grass. "Ugh..." I ran a hand through my hair. It seemed a lot straighter and shorter than I remembered...
"Oh! Jazmine, you're awake! How are you? It's been forever!" A small floating creature in a suit of armor was bubbling happily. "Oh, and don't forget your bow!" I looked where he was pointing to a beautiful bow laying in the ground next to a quiver of arrows. I stood up and leaned over to grab them as naturally as if I had been doing this forever.
"Hey, Stirkel. Could you conjure up a mirror?" I smiled at my old best friend. "And, long time no see!" The small knight cracked a smile, and a full length mirror appeared.
"What do you think? You like?" My normally voluminous black hair had been cut to my shoulders, flipping out at the ends. My sundress was now a short green tunic with a belt, showing a little more of my - ah, chest - than I would have liked. I was wearing a small shoulder cloak, also green, with gold trimming. My brown-gold eyes glowed. The bow was of light brown wood, expertly crafted with a silver handle piece. Stirkel giggled as I took myself in. "You look HOT, girl!"
"Why did they send me back here? Why now?" I was a bit angry. I liked living in the 'real' world. Stirkel's face darkened.
"I don't think I can tell you. Valri would rather." The little creature crossed its arms, huffing. "I want to, believe me, I do. But you know how Valri is..." I rolled my eyes.
"Let's go see her then." I suggested. Stirkel's face went white as a sheet.
"Uh, you can go by yourself. That girl gives me the willies! Have you seen the way she looks at me, like I'm an entree?" The pixie whispered the last part. "I'm always afraid she's gonna eat me." My mouth twitched as I tried not to laugh. Too late, I thought as I burst out laughing.
"Stirkel, you crack me up!" True to my word, I laughed harder, doubling over. Stirkel huffed and turned around. "Don't - worry, I'll - protect - you...!" I managed to gasp out between laughs. Hazel eyes widened at me from under the visor.
"Do I have to go?" Pixies were so whiny. They always expected to get what they want. I sighed heavily.
"No, you don't have to. But I'll miss you from the bottom of my heart! I haven't seen you in forever!" I said as dramatically as I could, trying to act like it would pain me if we were to be separated. Stirkel pouted, but I knew I had won. My little friend was so easy to win over, if you knew how to do it. "Let's go. We shouldn't keep Valri waiting!"
"Yeah! Come on, or Valri will eat me for sure!" Stirkel took off, fast as a speeding bullet, and I jogged along behind knowing I'd never be able to catch up.
