"Tiny bird, little bird, learn to see the lie."
The eyes that met Leo's were melted cream, soft and curious. At the sight of such a harmless thing, Leo's fear crawled away to the back of his skull. "What a chubby thing you are..." the shadow of Leo's hand reached towards the happy thing. It took the chance to affectionately lick Leo's hand, it's tongue whispering over his skin. Leo hissed and retracted his hand, holding it back to his chest. Gross.
Thing blinked. Calm and gentle flowing colours of sandstone ran lazy loops around its pupils. What lovely eyes. Leo still wished to replace his shattered mirrors.
"Well look at that- even Snug has a heart for the heartless. Mind you, she is too kind for her own good... glad to see you're doing okay, Kiddo."
The fox had snuck up on the mouse.
The warmth hushed and a sudden cold crept forward. The snake hiding in his skull uncoiled and made its way to the mouse's neck, he wasn't sure his heart could handle its own beat. But he didn't care, so what did it matter?
"Fox..." the mouse, still weak and floor ridden- could only muster a glare. He had been told many times his eyes were sharp like blades, he only hoped it were true.
"Relax, Snug won't hurt you- I-I won't hurt you. Promise. Oh, you probably want to know where you are..." Scruffy still looked the same as he did the pervious night, same clothes and everything, only his hair had somehow managed to get messier. The fox scratched its head as if it were contemplating something, its eyes wearily dancing to the floor. "Mind if I sit?"
"...T-this is your house, right?... Do whatever the hell you want."
Scruffy sat, "How'd you know? Uh- that this is my house I mean.." Leo scoffed, and trailed his eyes back to the centre of the roof. "The boxes, you said last night you had only recently moved here. Also, the pet kinda gives it away... and this house looks too well kept to just be some hideout."
Scruffy yawned, and flashed Leo an innocent smile he didn't fall for, "You're sharp, Kiddo. But.." the fox looked away, following the morning light out the window. His brief hesitance worried Leo. "You feeling okay? I-I can't help but feel this is partly my fault.. I r-really did just want to walk you home, you know? Friggen late n' dark! But I guess I came off as creepy, huh? It happens quite a bit... my mum sent me off soon as I turned 18- little over a week ago.. guess she thought I was kinda creepy too... t-that's why I'm here, in this crappy house."
The mouse listened to the fox's story, what he wouldn't give to always be away from the witch.
"What do you really want from me? Why wouldn't you call me an ambulance? You're lucky the fall wasn't as bad as it seemed." Leo made sure to make his skepticism known. The fox picked up on this and scratched his head awkwardly, clearly uncomfortable with the thought of answering... truthfully that is.
"Kiddo.. I.. I'm sorry. But think about it, you're what- 12?"
"-16."
"My bad, 16, and I'm an adult.. you got chased off into the bush at God only knows what hour, and to make matters worse you got hurt. See what I'm getting at here? I could have been put away for I dunno, being a pedophile or something, t-though I'm not a pedophile! Shit, you get I mean?"
Selfish fuck. "I get it, you were worried the paramedics would get the wrong idea and turn you in for... a misunderstanding."
The fox smiled unpleasantly, "Thanks for getting it, kiddo. I'm sorry... you're folks must be worried sick.."
Leo's laugh was quite literally a painful one, "Dude, trust me... that's the least of your worries." You should be more worried about what happens once I get the police on your fucking tail after abducting me.
Snug barked, signalling the sudden end of the conversation. Scruffy's genuine smile wasn't as terrifying as his fake one, could've given It a run for it's money. "Come'r bud," Scruffy pat his leg and the dog happily trotted over, nesting in its owner's crossed legs.
Leo's stomach growled unhappily, a ravenous beast sent from the depts of hell. "Oh man, you've gotta be hungry.." Leo didn't answer Scruffy's thought, instead choosing to stay quiet. In his current state, he couldn't walk, let alone move very much. He wasn't sure when the fox planned on releasing him, so a potential escape would have to be more well thought out then last time's failed prison break.
Scruffy got up without a word, and vanished past Leo's line of sight. Snug, now disgruntled after being removed from her human bedding, plopped down next to the mouse. She wined through a snort, or maybe a sigh. Leo didn't get to see animals much.
It had a taken a while for him to notice, but Leo finally released that someone had treated his wounds. Cuts rested under the protection of bandages while a white cloth was wrapped tightly around his left arm.
It couldn't have been...
