Choi Seungcheol aimlessly walked alongside the hustle and bustle of the main road's early morning traffic, the morning air filled his lungs as he continued to walk down the one familiar road that lead to a familiar apartment block. A lit cigarette in his mouth, phone in hand. Periodically he kept dialing the number that sat on the screen of his phone, staring back up at Seungcheol as he continued on his way. The owner of the number never picked up no matter how many times the older rang.
"I'm sorry, but the person you have called is unavailable" the voice tone told him for the nth time in the past hour. It was becoming not just annoying, more like a piss take.
"Damnit Mingyu" Seungcheol muttered with a sigh, picking up his pace and walking faster towards the familiar block of apartments he knew well. He hadn't heard off Wonwoo either which was very strange indeed, but Vernon had contacted him to tell him that Wonwoo was staying with himself and Seungkwan.
Vernon, Seungcheol, Wonwoo and Mingyu used to be a very close bunch. They used to go out every Friday night, whether that was to play snooker or discover new bars, the quad group had always been there for each other. But things changed- Vernon had moved in with his boyfriend, Seungcheol had got married and Wonwoo and Mingyu were carrying on with their own lives together as a couple. But what had gone so wrong with the soulmate duo that they had split up so suddenly? There was also the fact that Mingyu, Seungcheol and some of their other friends (bar Vernon and Wonwoo) had started up their own secret drug ring a year ago. It paid their bills, it helped paid for everything they wanted and needed in life. It was dangerous, but it was their new way of life. Mingyu couldn't be slacking off now. He'd missed one drop, and he knew work was picking up this month. He needed his friend to be okay.
Did they have a fight? Why was Wonwoo staying with Vernon? Did Wonwoo find out about the dealing?
The questions circled Seungcheol's mind as he walked into the apartment block building. He discarded the cigarette in the drain as he pulled through the door. It was cold, the smell of rain and damp filled his senses as he made his way up the open staircase. The tapping of his shoes upon the concrete floor echoed through the block, he passed by more and more apartments as he travelled upwards. It was quiet as always, almost too quiet. Most the residents worked day shifts so the apartment block was usually deserted like this.
Upon reaching the top floor where the Kim-Jeon residents resided, Seungcheol didn't know why a bad feeling suddenly swept over him.
He didn't know how or why it did, but it felt as if something had happened, that something was off. With his hand ready to knock on the door, just before he did he hesitated. Instead Seungcheol opted for pulling out his phone instead, dialing the number once more and listening carefully.
Ring, ring, ring.
It was as loud and clear as day, Mingyu's phone could be heard from the other side of the door. It was more than loud enough to be heard yet no-one answered, instead Seungcheol just stood and waited as the ringer rung itself out, his phone going to answer phone once again. There was no sound of life or movement at all from the other side of the door, It was deadly silent. Seungcheol went over to the door and pounded his fists on the solid divide between him and inside.
"MINGYU!" He shouted from the top of his lungs hoping for a reply. Waiting for a reply. Pleading. Silence returned.
There was no sound, nothing at all.
"Can I help you?" Seungcheol suddenly jumped as a voice called out to the bewildered man pounding at the door. He turned slightly to see a middle age lady standing outside a door on the over side of the floor. He didn't realise they had neighbors on this floor, but like he said when he usually came the place was usually deserted.
"I've just came to visit my friends-" he started, only to be abruptly stopped as she shook her head at him.
"I wouldn't bother, they had an argument a few weeks back and the one guy left, I haven't seen the other since then" she said half heartedly, one hand reaching out to grab her dog's lead, the animal who'd just appeared out of her apartment and sat staring at Seungcheol.
"Do you know who left?" Cheol furred his eyebrows, asking in response. If what Vernon had told him was right, then his guess was right.
"Wonwoo I think was the name I heard" she tried to recall. He already knew it. Seungcheol thanked her quickly as she disappeared back into her apartment, he turned his attention back to the structure called the door that blocked his way in.
What the hell happened to them? He had texted Mingyu a few days ago, saying he wanted to talk and go out like the old days, just before Vernon got with Seungkwan. He sighed hopelessly placing his hand on the door. He may have gone out and left his phone, he wasn't sure anymore though. He ran a hand through his hair stressed before getting up to his feet.
Just on the brink of turning and walking away, the sunlight coming from the building windows made something sparkle in his eye.
He caught sight of the metal slot where the mail entered the house weekly, an idea sprung to the mans mind almost instantly. Seungcheol had to make sure Mingyu was alright. Getting down and opening it, he peered inside, coughing as the dust and silence escaped through the slot of precious fresh air.
"KIM MINGYU! WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU!" He yelled into the apartment, not seeing the lady from next door come out of her door and stand behind him, probably to make sure he wasn't going to rob the place. He was acting shifty (he was a drug dealer after all, but his job was trying not to act shifty and he was failing miserably), and like a nuisance at the moment he had to admit, but something was definitely off.
"DAMNIT MINGYU I'M TALKING TO YOU! WHERE ARE YOU!" He yelled again, slamming back the slot in anger. He hated them getting into arguments, and he hated the fact that he didn't know where Mingyu was. Was he safe? Alarm bells were ringing in his mind, panic started wavering over him ten to the dozen. Did he take on a job on his own? Had he been arrested? No. He couldn't have been, as they'd always promised if one went down, all of them went down together. A risky business where it was all or non at all.
"Excuse me sir, but I think I forgot to tell you something earlier-" the almost guilty and timid sounding voice behind him made Cheol turn and stare at the woman from next door again. His eyes like ice as he swung his head around at her.
She apologized before she spoke. She started telling him that she'd heard screaming from Mingyu a few days ago, there was loud smashing noises and glass shattering. The lady had put it down to the fact maybe Wonwoo had came back and they'd had an argument, but ever since then it had been deadly quiet. The alarm bells in his mind started ringing louder than anything, in seconds the older of the quad group was on his feet with fear in his eyes.
"AND HE HASN'T LEFT SINCE?!" Seungcheol spared no second, suddenly pounding his body against the door, the hinges screeched as he did.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" The woman wailed at him as he slammed against it over and over. Seungcheol felt something tear in his arm by the brute force of his weight crashing onto the solid structure.
Mingyu was in there, but he was praying he was alive.
"Call an ambulance!" He gasped for breath, she first pulled a worried expression before she nodded and complied, rummaging through her bag for her phone, he heard her dial the three important numbers in.
"COME ON-" He yelled as he tried over and over at the door again. And on his last try, the door finally fell down dead with a crash, Seungcheol luckily grabbed the doorframe to steady himself instead of falling with it.
"Mingyu- MINGYU!" As Seungcheol finally got moving again, he clutched his arm in pain as he suddenly screamed, terror arising in his voice.
He searched the darkened, dusty room with his eyes for any signs of the younger man. Yet he stopped dead in his tracks, a lump formed in his throat as he saw the closed bedroom door.
And suddenly everything froze.
He tried to run forward but he felt as if he was still stood still. Before he realised Seungcheol was standing staring at the door. He pleaded as he twisted the door knob and tried to push it open. But the lump that suddenly formed in the back of his throat made him feel sick as he felt the weight slumped against it.
Mingyu slumped against it.
Shattered glass and dried blood stains covered the floor like a flood. Seungcheol's breath was taken away as he finally got inside the room, he pulled the younger up and shook him franticly hoping for a response. The bottles and drug packets scattered the floor, he moved the lot under the bed quickly so the police wouldn't find them when they arrived. He'd clean up properly when Mingyu was dealt with.
"MINGYU!" He pleaded, tears started dropping harshly onto Mingyu's faded skin. He looked dead, the tanned youngster was now so fragile, Seungcheol was scared to move him in case he broke in two. He looked thinner than ever, by the state of the house he hadn't been looking after himself either.
The woman from earlier had came running in, shed been shouting but Seungcheol hadn't taken any notice. His focus was on Mingyu, and she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw the ghost lying on the floor. She didn't say anything, she only looked with wide eyes at Seungcheol's tear filled ones. But the words that left his mouth made her breathe the biggest sigh of relief.
"He's alive."
