Chapter-45

(Manik, Mukti, and Cabir are in the ward with Riya when Ridhaan enters with the senior doctor.)

Doctor- I hope you are doing good now, Dr Riya.

Riya- Yes, doctor. I am better now.

Doctor- Well, let's see. You all please go out. I need to change the dressing too.

(Manik nods and leaves with Cabir, Mukti, and Ridhaan following them. Once they come outside, Manik questions Ridhaan.)

Manik- Everything is fine, right? And there's no issue too, right doctor?

Ridhaan- Relax Manik. She is fine now. And there is no internal injury. So don't worry.

Manik- No, but she had that pain in her arm, so...

Ridhaan- Vo sirf muscle pain hai aur kuch nahi hai. Aur abhi doctor bhi andar check kar lenge to tujhe aur confirmation mil jayega.

[Ridhaan- That's just a muscle pain and you will get the same confirmation from the doctor as well.]

Manik- Hmm.

(They all wait outside till the doctor is done with the dressing and then go in.)

Doctor- I have examined her properly, and there is nothing to worry. Her wounds are recovering well. She will be fine soon, Mr Malhotra.

(Riya smiles, looking at Manik, but her smile turns into a frown when she finds him lost in some deep thought.)

Riya- Manik. What are you thinking?

Manik- Doctor, I think that you should run a complete body check-up for her.

(Everyone present in the room gets shocked when Manik says this.)

Riya- Full body check-up? I am not even that badly hurt, Manik.

Ridhaan- Exactly! She is fine, Manik.

Mukti- Aur Bhai Bhabhi khud bhi to doctor hai naa. Unhe pata hi hoga sab tabhi vo keh rahi hai ki sab theek hai.

[Mukti- And she is herself a doctor, bro. So she must know everything already. That's why she is so sure about being okay.]

Cabir- Exactly! Bhai kya bol rahe ho yaar aap.

[Cabir- Exactly! What are you saying, Bro?]

Manik- Ho gaya sab ka bol ke? Ab main bol lu?

[Manik- Has everyone spoken? Shall I speak now?]

Riya- Kya bologe tum? Main koyi full body check-up nahi karva rahi hoon.

[Riya- What will you say? I am not doing any full body check-up.]

Manik- Chup raho tum.

[Manik- You just stay quiet.]

(Riya's mouth is left open on Manik's remark, and she makes a cute angry face while Cabir, Mukti, and Ridhaan enjoy the show.)

Manik (to the doctor)- Doctor aap vahi kijiye jo main keh raha hoon. Don't worry about the money and agar ek din aur rukna pade; we are ready. But I need you to ensure that everything is fine with her and that there are no internal injuries.

[Manik (to the doctor)- Doctor, do what I say. Don't worry about the money; if we need to stay here for another day, we are ready. But I need you to ensure that everything is fine with her and that there are no internal injuries.]

Riya- Manik, what are you doing?

Manik- Shhh! Stay quiet.

Riya- How can I stay quiet when you are acting like this. This is not fair.

Manik- Everything is fair, and you will get all the tests done, and that's final.

Riya- No, it's not final.

Manik- Yes, it is. And now quiet. (to the doctor) Please start with the process, doctor.

Doctor- Sure! We can have the tests tomorrow, but she needs to spend one more night here. She will be discharged after the reports are out.

Manik- Hmm. That's no issue.

Doctor- Okay then.

(The doctor leaves, and Manik turns back to witness everyone looking at him, shocked and confused.)

Manik- Relax, guys. Why are you all overreacting?

Ridhaan- Are we overreacting? Really?

Manik- Of course. You are overreacting now as well.

Ridhaan- Ye kisse shaadi karli tune Riya. Ek baar back ground check to kar leti.

[Ridhaan- Whom did you marry, Riya? You should have checked the background once.]\

Riya- Ab kya hi ho sakta hai Ridhaan. Ab to ek mahina bhi ho gaya shaadi ko.

[Riya- What can happen now, Ridhaan. It's a month since the wedding already.]

Mukti- Okay guys, relax. Aur ek baar tests karva lo naa Bhabhi. Bhai ko bhi satisfaction ho jayegi ki sab theek hai aur aap bhi bilkul theek ho.

[Mukti- Okay, guys, relax. And get the tests done once, sister-in-law. Bro will also get the satisfaction that everything is fine and you are also okay.]

Riya- Aur koyi option bhi nahi hai mere paas Mukti. Karvane hi padenge saare tests.

[Riya- And there is no other option I have, Mukti. All the tests will have to be done now.]

(Riya looks at Manik, who has a victory smile on his face while she shakes her head in disbelief.)

Ridhaan- Okay then. All the tests will be done tomorrow. You can rest, for now, Riya.

Riya- Thanks, Ridhaan.

(Ridhaan then leaves from there.)

Cabir- Bro I think aap ko bhi ghar jaa ke fresh ho jaana chahiye ek baar. Aap ne kuch khaya bhi nahi hai breakfast ke baad.

[Cabir- Bro, I think You should also go home and get fresh once. You haven't even eaten anything after breakfast.]

Manik- Cabir, I am fine, and I am not even hungry. It's okay.

Riya- But Manik, you need rest too. You go home. I am fine.

Manik- Riya, I am fine and not going anywhere.

Mukti- To hum ek kaam karte hain. Main aur Cabir abhi ghar jaate hain aur aap ka saaman aur khaana le aate hain.

[Mukti- So we can do one thing. Cabir and I can go home and bring the required stuff and food for you.]

Cabir- Yes. That is a good idea. Because Bhai to yahan se jaane nahi wale Bhabhi ko chod ke.

[Cabir- Yes. That is a good idea. Because Bro is not going anywhere leaving sister-in-law.]

(Riya looks on quite shocked by Cabir's remark and Mukti smiles mischievously at Manik and Riya.)

Manik (with a tight-lipped smile)- Cabir! How much money do you need to stay quiet?

Cabir- Koyi paise nahi chahiye Bhai. Jaa raha hoon main Mukti ke saath. Chal Mukti.

[Cabir- I don't need any money, Bro. I am leaving with Mukti. Come Mukti.]

Mukti- Haan haan chal. Aur hum Bhabhi ke liye bhi ghar se hi kuch le aate hain naa. Hospital ka khaana bilkul acha nahi hota.

[Mukti- Yes yes let's go. And we will bring something for the sister-in-law from home as well. Hospital food was not good at all.]

Manik- Haan haan le aao. Par uske liye pehle jao toh.

[Manik- Yes, bring it. But at least leave for that first.]

Mukti- We are leaving, bro. Chill.

(Mukti and Cabir leave, and Manik chuckles and roams around the ward. Riya then thinks something and then takes a sigh at last before turning to Manik.)

Riya- Manik.

(He stops using his phone and looks at her.)

Manik- Hmm.

Riya- Ye sab... jo bhi hua vo sab ko pata chal gaya hoga naa? Like saare media channels event ko cover kar rahe the so ye news to har jagha hogi?

[Riya- All this... Whatever happened, everyone must have come to know, right? All the media channels covered the event, so this news will be everywhere?]

Manik- You don't worry about that. Maine baat kar li hai channel heads se and sab yahi bolenge that this was an accident, and the search for the culprit is still on. Don't worry about it.

[Manik- You don't worry about that. I have talked to the channel heads, and everyone will say the same: this was an accident, and the search for the culprit is still on. Don't worry about it.]

Riya- That means every channel is showing this news?

Manik- Mostly yes! But you don't have to worry. Everything is under control. So just relax.

Riya- Hmm. Manik, you had my phone with you before the event, right? I need my phone. I need to check something.

Manik- Yes, sure.

(He gives her the phone, and she goes through all the messages she has received for a speedy recovery and best wishes, but the message she wants to read is not there. She keeps going through the chats repeatedly, teary-eyed and stressed, and the feeling of not finding that ONE message from that specific ONE person is driving her crazy. Manik looks on, confused and concerned as he sees her stressed.)

Manik (sitting in front of her)- Hey, what happened? Why so stressed and...

(He is more shocked and worried when he sees tears flowing down her eyes.)

Manik (worried)- Riya! What happened suddenly? Why these tears, hmm? Tell me.

Riya (cleaning her face)- It's nothing. Nothing happened, Manik... It's fine.

Manik- Seriously? Do you think I am going to take that lie? Just look at me and tell me about what happened. Just now, you were smiling and now these tears. Share with me. Tell me. What happened?

Riya (looking here and there, still crying)- It's nothing, Manik. I just got emotional, that's it. Nothing else.

Manik- Really?

Riya- Hmm.

(He then moves closer to her and cups her face gently, but she closes her eyes and lets her tears flow.)

Manik (slowly)- Riya. Look at me.

(She moves her head in a no, and he sighs on this.)

Manik (softly)- Riya. Tum chahe jitna marzi avoid kar lo iss baat ko. But I will not let it go. Because this thing made you cry. So it is a big issue for me, and I need to know what is bothering you. Agar tum mujhe bataogi hi nahi to main uss cheez ko theek kaise karunga? Hmm?

[Manik (softly)- Riya. You can avoid this thing as much as you want. But I will not let it go. Because this thing made you cry. So it is a big issue for me, and I need to know what is bothering you. How will I fix the thing if you won't tell me about it? Hmm?]

(She then opens her eyes and looks at him in tears.)

Riya (cryingly)- Iss cheez ko koyi theek nahi kar sakta Manik. Isse koyi bhi kabhi bhi badal nahi sakta.

[Riya (cryingly)- No one can fix this thing, Manik. No one can ever change this.]

Manik- It's nothing like that. Just tell me what the matter is and I will handle the rest. Come on, tell me. What happened?

(She looks at him in tears, and he looks at her softly and urges her to speak up, still cupping her face softly.)

Riya (in tears)- Manik har media channel ne ye news cover ki hai. Sab ko pata hai that I got injured and am admitted here. But...

[Riya (in tears)- Manik, every media channel has covered this news. Everyone knows that I got injured, and I am admitted here. But...]

Manik (gently)- But what? What happened suddenly, hmm?

Riya (in a choked voice)- But my family is not here, Manik.

(He looks on sadly as she breaks down in tears and cries more.)

Riya (cryingly)- Mom, Dad, Harshad or even Aryaman, no one Manik. Koyi bhi nahi hai yahan. Aur... aur naa koyi call yaa message. Kuch bhi nahi. I am their daughter naa. To vo aisa kaise kar sakte hain mere saath. Unn logon ko bilkul farak nahi padta ki mere saath kya ho raha hai... main... main theek hoon yaa nahi? Nothing Manik? Kuch bhi nahi?

[Riya (cryingly)- Mom, Dad, Harshad or even Aryaman, no one Manik. No one is here. And... and not even a call or a message. Nothing. I am their daughter, right. So how can they do this to me? They don't care what happens to me... I... If I am okay or not? Nothing Manik? Nothing?]

(She cries more, but he takes a deep breath and speaks up.)

Manik- It is not your fault, naa Baby. If they don't understand the value of their daughter then it is their loss, not yours. And who said that your family is not here?

Riya (slowly)- What do you mean?

Manik- I mean that you have your actual family here with you. The family here actually loves you and cares for you. You have a brother in Cabir, a sister in Mukti, and your great husband- Mr Manik Malhotra.

(He smiles at her, and she chuckles at his remark.)

Manik- And you know what... Your family here is enough to take care of you. And hum logon ka bhi to same hi case hai naa. We three only have you as our family now.

[Manik- And you know what... Your family here is enough to take care of you. And we are also the same case, aren't we? We three only have you as our family now.]

(He then wipes her tears and speaks while looking into her eyes.)

Manik- Family sirf naam ke liye nahi honi chahiye naa. Family members support and stand with each other through all the highs and lows. And that's what we are doing, naa. Mukti is not blaming you for all this because she knows it is not your fault. In fact, someone else didn't want Mukti to win, so the person did this. But I am soon going to find that person, okay? Aur ek baar mujhe mil gaya naa vo to...

[Manik- The family should not be there only for the name. Family members support and stand with each other through all the highs and lows. And that's what we are doing. Mukti is not blaming you for all this because she knows it is not your fault. In fact, someone else didn't want Mukti to win, so the person did this. But I am soon going to find that person, okay? And once I find him, he isn't...]

(He looks at her, who is looking at him with glassy eyes like a kid and takes a deep breath to control his emotions.)

Manik- Don't...don't look at me like that.

Riya (coming out of her trance)- Huh?

Manik- Umm... nothing. It's just that I don't think about them at all. You have a family where everyone cares for you and is with you. There is no need to take stress thinking about them.

Riya- Okay.

Manik- And you need to stop thinking about all this. All this is not good for you at this point in time.

Riya- Relax Manik. I am much better now. Don't take too much stress. This is not good for you either.

Manik- Okay, fine. I won't take stress, but tum abhi rest karo. Abhi Mukti aur Cabir ko aane mein time hai so tab takk so jao thodi der.

[Manik- Okay, fine. I won't take stress, but you take rest now. There is time for Mukti and Cabir to come, so sleep till then.]

Riya- I am fine, Manik, and I am not sleepy. It's okay.

Manik- But no stressing yourself.

Riya- Yes sir. No stressing myself.

Manik- Good.

(She takes a sigh and sits back comfortably on the bed while Manik calls his employees to keep a check on the work as he didn't go to the office today. Riya looks on as he is looking stressed and is not able to talk properly in the room because of some network issues.)

Manik- Damn it! How can he expect me to meet him outside the hospital? If this deal wasn't important I would have never agreed to work with him.

Riya- It's okay, Manik. Go meet him. Work is important too.

Manik- I know work is important, but it will take a lot of time. Like he wants to discuss all the terms and conditions for the deal and wants to change them too. And I cannot leave you alone here.

Riya- Manik ye mera hi hospital hai and almost saare staff ko to jaanti hoon main. And I am much better now. Tum jaake mil lo usse. Usse iss deal ke liye tumhara jitna time chahiye usse de do.

[Riya- Manik, this is my hospital, and I know almost all the staff. And I am much better now. You go and meet him. Give him as much time as he wants from you for this deal.]

Manik- I don't want to do this. I don't know why, but I don't feel like leaving you alone here.

Riya- Abhi thodi der pehle tum mujhe stress nahi lene ke liye keh rahe the aur ab khud itna stress le rahe ho. Don't worry, Manik aur apna kaam kar lo. Main theek hoon.

[Riya- Just a while back, you told me not to take the stress, and now you are taking so much pressure yourself. Don't worry about me and do your work. I am fine.]

Manik- Sure? You are not saying all this just to send me away, right?

Riya- I am fine and I am telling the truth as well. You go.

Manik- Hmm, okay. And if you need me, just call me, okay. I will come back then only.

Riya- Okay okay. Now go.

Manik- Hmm.

(He starts leaving but stops on his way and turns back to her.)

Riya (confused)- Kya hua?

[Riya (confused)- What happened?]

(He then goes to her and kisses her forehead, and she smiles at his this gesture.)

Manik- Take care. I will be back soon.

Riya- I will. All the best for your work.

Manik- Thank you.

(He then leaves from there, and Riya smiles, thinking of him.)

(After around 15-20 minutes, Riya is looking outside through the glass door when she sees a girl of about 05 crying in her father's arms, walking around the corridor, trying to console her. She keeps looking at the father-daughter duo keenly and teary-eyed. The father then sits on the bench in the corridor, makes his daughter sit on his lap, and hugs her closer to his chest. He then wipes her tears and kisses her head lovingly. Riya bites her lips to control her emotions when she sees the father kissing his daughter's entire face and tickling her to make her smile, and the little girl laughs loudly. The father further makes his daughter sleep on his shoulder peacefully while Riya's heart breaks into pieces upon witnessing this scene, and she fists the bedsheet tightly in her hands to control herself. This scene triggers a memory that was completely opposite of what she saw today.)

(A 06-year-old Riya had bruised her knee while playing in the garden, and her wound was bleeding profusely, and she won't stop crying because of pain and fear.)

Riya (cryingly)- Mumma! (hiccups) Mumma! Mumma dukh raha hai bohot. Mumma...

[Riya (cryingly)- Mom! (hiccups) Mom! Mom it's paining a lot. Mom...]

(But no one comes to help her as Anita is busy talking to her friend on the phone, so she ignores Riya's cries. That little girl cried in pain, but her mother didn't even care to check on her. The butler of the house, an elderly man, couldn't control himself, so he took Riya to the hospital despite Ashwin and Anita's strict warnings to never take her to a doctor rather than treat her at home matter how severe the issue was. Upon reaching the hospital, the doctor told the butler that her wound was deep and she needed stitches.)

Riya (a crying mess she was by now)- Mumma chahiye. Mumma... Pa...Papa.

[Riya (a crying mess she was by now)- I need Mom. Mom... Da...Dad.]

Butler (teary-eyed)- Beta Mumma aa jayegi. Abhi doctor uncle ko aap ko theek karne do please.

[Butler (teary-eyed)- Mom will come, baby. Now please let doctor uncle treat you.]

Riya (crying badly)- Dukh raha hai yahan pe... (she said pointing to her knee) Mumma ko bulao naa. Mumma chahiye.

[Riya (crying badly)- It is paining here... (she said pointing to her knee) Call Mom, please. I need Mom.]

(The butler just hugged her and rubbed her back to calm her down because she had been crying for the last 40 minutes.)

Butler- Riya is a strong girl, right? And strong girl don't cry like this.

(She looks up at the butler and asks him innocently.)

Riya- Mumma Papa kab aayenge? Mumma ke paas jaana hai.

[Riya- When will Mom and Dad come? I want to go to Mom.]

Butler- Bohot jaldi aayenge vo dono. Abhi aap jaldi se doctor uncle ko unn ka kaam karne do. Phir Mumma aa jayegi.

[Butler- Both of them will come very soon. Now you quickly let doctor uncle do his work. Then Mom will come.]

Riya- Okay.

(The hope that twinkled in her eyes broke the old man's heart because he knew the truth- that her parents were the least concerned about her. That she didn't matter to them at all. They hated her to the extent that they won't even want to see her face ever but were tied with her responsibility, according to them. The butler tried to distract her when the doctor was treating her wound but wasn't successful as she cried out more during the entire process, and he failed to calm her down. After the wound was bandaged, he hugged her tightly, and tears rolled down his eyes as he felt her tiny frame shivering badly, and she was still crying and hiccupping.)

Butler- Ab rona nahi. Abhi Mumma Papa ke paas jayenge. Hmm.

[Butler- Don't cry now. Now we will go to Mom and Dad. Hmm.]

Riya (meekly)- Okay.

Butler- Let's go home...

(He couldn't complete his sentence as the room door banged open, and a furious Anita and Ashwin entered inside.)

Ashwin (shouting in anger)- How dare you! Isse yahan kaise le aaye tum hum se bina puche?

[Ashwin (shouting in anger)- How dare you! How did you bring her here without asking us?]

(Riya hugged the butler tightly as Ashwin's roaring voice scared her to the core.)

Anita (to Riya)- And you! What is all this drama?

Riya (cryingly)- Mumma! Dukh raha hai. Papa...

[Riya (cryingly)- Mom! It's paining. Dad...]

(Ashwin pushes the butler away, bends over Riya and clutches her face tightly, and screams at her angrily.)

Ashwin- Ab ek bhi word aur bola naa to tera vo haal karunga ki zindagi bhar yaad rakhegi. Samjhi!

[Ashwin- Don't even say a single word now, or I will do something to you that you will remember for the rest of your life. Got it?]

Riya (terrified, mumbles slowly)- Papa...

[Riya (terrified, mumbles slowly)- Dad...]

Ashwin (shouting in anger)- Shut up! Just shut your mouth! And stop crying! Quiet now!

(He wipes her tears harshly and then looks at her injured knee.)

Ashwin- Aur ye kya drama hai? Kya hua hai itna tumhe ki hospital aana pad gaya haan?

[Ashwin- And what is this drama? What happened to you that you had to come to the hospital, hmm?]

(He moves her injured leg forcefully, and Riya cries out badly in pain.)

Butler- Sir kya kar rahe hain aap! Uss ko stitches lage hain vahan. Please thodi si to daya kijiye uss pe. Bachi hai vo.

[Butler- What are you doing, sir? She has got stitches there. Please have some mercy on her. She is a kid.]

Anita- Tum zyaada bakwaas mat karo samjhe. Tumhari naukri to gayi beta.(to Riya) Aur tum! Ghar aao phir tumhe batati hoon main. Bloody curse.

[Anita-You don't talk too much, understand. Your job is gone now. (To Riya) and you! Come home, then I will tell you. Bloody curse.]

Riya (cryingly)- Mumma! Bohot dukh raha hai.

[Riya (cryingly)- Mom! It's paining a lot.]

Anita (angrily)- Samajh mein nahi aaya Papa ne kya bola Riya? Ek dum chup!

[Anita (angrily)- You don't understand what Dad said Riya? Quiet at once!]

Riya (in pain)- Mum...

[Riya (in pain)- Mo...]

(Her word is left incomplete as a slap echoes in the room and the butler looks on, shocked as Ashwin just slapped Riya with such force that her cheek has bled, and she has gone numb and is just staring at her father in shock.)

Ashwin (angrily)- Ghar le ke aao isse abhi.

[Ashwin (angrily)- Bring her home now.]

Butler- Sir, she needs a doctor...

Ashwin (shouting)- Ghar le kar aao isse.

[Ashwin (shouting)- Bring her home now.]

Butler (scared)- Okay, sir.

(Ashwin and Anita leave from there, and the butler looks back at Riya with pity in his eyes as she is looking at the door from where Ashwin and Anita just left, and her hand is still on her bruised cheek. The butler then took her home, and they fired him from his job.)

(Riya comes out of her flashback and looks around scared, her face full of tears and her breathing laboured. She is shaking badly in fear, and her eyes have turned red. She then fills a glass with water with her hands shivering badly and drinks a few sips from it, trying to calm herself.)

Riya (with her voice shaking badly)- Everything is okay, Riya. Shhhh. Everything is fine.

(She closes her eyes and takes some deep breaths but then hears the room door open slowly and is left shocked upon seeing the people who have entered the ward.)

Riya (mumbles)- Mom, Dad.
