Chapter-08
Manik- What?
(Riya tsighs and turns to the guy.)
Riya- Tumhe jab car ne hit kiya to zyaada force se internal injury ho gayi hai. And it looks deep. You will need 2-3 surgeries to get back to normal again. And leg amputate bhi karni pad sakti hai.
[Riya- When you got hit by the car, the extreme force caused an internal injury. And it looks deep. You will need 2-3 surgeries to get back to normal again. And your leg may get amputated too.]
Manik + Guy- What!
Riya- Yes. Tum apni family ko bhi inform kar do. I will get the room ready for you.
[Riya- Yes. And inform your family as well. I will get the room ready for you.]
Guy (scared)- Amputate?
Manik (angrily)- What the hell is going on? How can he get so injured? He bloody came here arguing with me for money and has internal injuries? He is just lying.
(Riya turns to Manik and presses his hand, putting the finger on his lips, signalling him to be quiet. But our Mr Malhotra is just lost in her touch and only stares at her. She, too, realizes what she did and takes her hand back, embarrassed. This also brings Manik out of his world, and he understands what Riya is doing is for him only. He nods at her, and she turns to the guy with a serious face, while Manik stands behind her admiring her with a small smile.)
Riya (to the guy)- Yes, amputate. Look agar jaldi surgery nahi huyi to infection badh sakta hai aur zyaada leg amputate karni padegi. You can even die.
[Riya- Yes, amputate. If you don't get the surgery done, the infection may spread more in your body and cause amputation of a more significant portion of your leg. You can even die.]
(Manik covers his mouth and tries to stop himself from laughing, looking at the scenario in front of him. He then stands on a side, crossing his arms on his chest, and enjoys the drama.)
Riya- Tum apni family ko bhi inform kar do. They should be prepared for everything right.
[Riya- Inform your family as well. They should be prepared for everything, right.]
Guy- Main ye sab nahi karvane wala.
[Guy- I am not doing all this.]
Riya- Arey kyu? Aur tum to vaise hi koyi payment nahi dene wale. To kis baat ki tension hai?
[Riya- But why? And you are not even going to pay for it. Then why worry?]
(At that point, Manik jumps into the conversation and acts as crying, wiping his fake tears.)
Manik (fake crying)- Bilkul! Kahan se launga main itne saare paise? Kya karva liya tumne Bhai?
[Manik (fake crying)- Exactly. How will I arrange such a large amount of money? What did you do, man?]
(The receptionist looks on weirdly at Manik because she knows of his status and power.)
Receptionist- But sir aap to...
[ Receptionist- But sir, you are...]
(Manik turns around and glares at the girl angrily, asking her to shut her mouth, and she nods in fear.)
Riya (to the guy)- Let's go then. Let's start the surgery.
(Riya nods to the ward boy who comes forward to hold the guy, but before that, he gets away and stands up on his feet.)
Guy- Mujhe koyi operation nahi karvana yaar. Jab kuch hua hi nahi to kaisa operation. Main to bas natak kar raha tha inn se paise lene ke liye.
[Guy- I don't need surgery. Why will I get operated on when I am not hurt? I was just lying to extract money from him.]
Manik (sternly)-Aur jab tujhe kuch hua hi nahi hai to kis cheez ke paise haan? Hum bhi natak hi kar rahe the bas.
[Manik (sternly)- When you are not hurt, why will I give you any money? We all were just acting too.]
Riya- Kuch nahi hua hai tumhe. Ek scratch bhi nahi hai leg par, and you asked him to pay for your hospital expenses. How much low can you stoop for money?
[Riya- You are perfectly fine. There's not even a slight scratch on your leg, and you asked him to pay for your hospital expenses. How much low can you stoop for money?]
Guy- Please mujhe jaane do madam, sir. Main aisa kabhi nahi karunga pakka. Jaane do mujhe please.
[Guy- Please let me go, mam, sir. I won't repeat my mistake ever again. Please let me go.]
Manik- Dubara apni shakal mat dikhana mujhe samjha. Now just get out of here.
[Manik- Don't show me your face ever again. Understood? Now just get out of here.]
(The man runs from there, and Manik and Riya take a sigh of relief together. Riya then leaves from there when Manik calls her from behind.)
Manik- Dr Riya.
(On listening to her name, and that too from him, she feels something different inside her, a feeling which has no name for now. She feels a different peace in her heart that she has never felt before. She turns around and looks at him, and he comes to her.)
Manik- Thank you for helping me out. I would have to pay him a hefty amount if you were not there. So thanks.
Riya- It's all fine, sir. He was lying for money and needed a lesson. So I guess this was a lifelong lesson for him.
Manik- Of course.
Riya- You...
(Just then, a nurse comes running to her.)
Nurse- Mam, the patient in ICU 4, is sinking. Please come with me.
Riya- Shit!
(Riya quickly rushes to the ICU with the nurse, and Manik takes a sigh, looking at her. He then leaves when the receptionist speaks up.)
Receptionist- Sir aap ne Riya mam ko 2 baar thank you kaha. But sab to humesha kehte hain ki aap kabhi kisi ko sorry yaa thank you nahi kehte.
[Receptionist- Sir, you thanked Riya mam twice. But everyone says that you never apologize or thank someone.]
(Manik chuckles at her remark and leans closer to her onto the reception table.)
Manik (smirking)-Log jo bhi kehte hain sahi kehte hain. Manik Malhotra kisi ko bhi... I mean kisi ko bhi sorry ya thank you nahi bolta. But now the 'LOG' need to know that she is the only exception to that kisi. Okay?
[Manik (smirking)- People don't lie, actually. Manik Malhotra never apologizes or thanks, anyone. But now, all those people need to know that she is the only exception in this case. Okay?]
(He passes her a fake smile and leaves from there, setting his blazer.)
(Riya comes to her cabin all tired after an operation and goes to the restroom to freshen up. She comes out after that and checks her phone to see 2 missed calls from Anita. She takes a deep breath and calls her back, settling on her chair.)
Anita- Kis ko apne jaal mein phasane mein busy thi jo phone nahi uthaya.
[Anita- Who were you busy trapping in your game that you didn't receive my call?]
(Riya closes her eyes and takes a deep breath to control herself from crying.)
Riya (teary-eyed)- A 10-year-old had a clot in his brain. Ussi ki surgery kar rahi thi. Usse apne jaal mein phasane nahi gayi thi.
[Riya (teary-eyed)- A 10-year-old had a clot in his brain. I was busy with his surgery. Actually, I was just trying to trap him in my game.]
Anita- Oh, just let it be. I don't care about all this. Jo marzi karti raho but keep yourself free in the evening. Mrs Malhotra and her daughter are coming to see you at the hospital.
[Anita- Oh, just let it be. I don't care about all this. Do whatever you want to, but keep yourself free in the evening. Mrs Malhotra and her daughter are coming to see you at the hospital.]
Riya (confused)- Kon Mrs Malhotra?
[Riya (confused)- Who is Mrs Malhotra?]
Anita- Your to be mother-in-law, you bitch. Aur unke saamne koyi drama mat karna. Aur agar tumhari vajhe se unhone iss shaadi se naa ki to tumhara kya haal hoga ye soch lena.
[Anita- She is your to-be mother-in-law bitch. And don't start with your drama in front of her. And if she said no to this marriage because of you, you better be aware of what will happen to you.]
(A tear rolls down Riya's eye at this point, and she bites her lips to control herself from crying. Then, Anita cuts the call after muttering some curses to her, and she puts her phone away. Riya then holds her head in her hands and starts crying. Just then, Ridhaan enters her cabin and looks on, concerned at her.)
Ridhaan- Hey, Riya. What happened?
(He comes to her side, takes her in a brotherly hug, and rubs her back to calm her down.)
Ridhaan- Calm down, Riya. Everything is going to be okay. It's okay.
Riya (cryingly)- It's not okay, Ridhaan. It hurts. It hurts so bad that my family hates me so much with no fault of mine. My mother curses me every time she talks to me. Why? What is my fault? Why always me?
Ridhaan- It's not your fault. Ye unn ka loss hai that they are losing a gem like you. You don't have to blame yourself for that, sweetie. It's all okay. It's not your fault at all.
[Riya- It's not your fault. It's their loss that they are losing a gem like you. You don't have to blame yourself for that, sweetie. It's all okay. It's not your fault at all.]
Riya (crying, breathing heavily)- It is my fault. I must have done something wrong jo sab mujhe itna hate karte hain. It must be my fault, but maine uss ko ignore kar diya hoga. Yes! Something is wrong. It's my fault...
[Riya (crying, breathing heavily)- It is my fault. I must have done something wrong that they all hate me so much. It must be my fault, but I would have ignored it. Yes. Something is wrong. It's my fault...]
(She breathes heavily as she gets a panic attack and rubs her chest to decrease the pain. And Ridhaan rushes and gets her a glass of water. He makes her take some sips from the glass, but on seeing her not calming down, he picks her up from the chair and makes her lay down on the couch in the cabin. He then rubs her hands and keeps consoling her with his words too.)
Ridhaan- Riya, take a deep breath. Come on, take some deep breaths.
(He keeps rubbing her hands, and she closes her eyes and tries breathing deeply.)
Riya (to herself)- Everything is fine. I am fine.
Ridhaan- Yes. Everything is fine, and everyone loves Riya a lot. She is unique to everyone.
Riya (breathing deeply)- Yes! Love. Special.
(As she closes her eyes and repeats these words, she sees an image of Manik smiling with closed eyes, and she opens her eyes instantly. She then takes some more deep breaths to calm herself down, and Ridhaan keeps rubbing her hands.)
Ridhaan (worried)- Ab better lag raha hai? Are you feeling okay?
[Ridhaan (worried)- Are you feeling better now? Are you feeling okay?]
Riya (slowly)- I am fine.
(Ridhaan takes a sigh of relief at that. She then gets up, and he helps her sit.)
Ridhaan- Riya, you need to rest. Just look at yourself.
Riya- I am okay Ridhaan. And Mrs Malhotra is coming here to meet me.
Ridhaan (confused)- Mrs Malhotra?
(Riya then tells him all that Ashwin told her about the contract marriage, but not about what happened last night.)
Ridhaan- Are you mad? You should have said no. Why did you agree?
Riya- They did not ask me Ridhaan. They told me to say yes. Kya karun main? You know ki agar naa bolungi to they will again start blaming me. I had to say yes.
[Riya- They did not ask me Ridhaan. They told me to say yes. What should I do? You know that if I say no, then they will again start blaming me. I had to say yes.]
Ridhaan- Ye sab jo ho raha hai vo kam hai jo tune iske liye bhi haan kar diya? Aur mujhe kyu nahi bataya pehle? Main baat kar leta unse.
[Ridhaan- All this happening is less right that you agreed to this thing too? And why didn't you tell me earlier about it? I would have talked to them.]
Riya- I didn't want to drag you into my mess, Ridhaan. And kisi ke baat karne se kuch nahi hota. They won't step back.
[Riya- I didn't want to drag you into my mess, Ridhaan. That's why I hid this from you, and there's no use talking to them. They won't step back.]
(He looks at her, concerned, and sits next to her.)
Ridhaan- I am your best friend, Riya. Aur hum iss issue ko solve kar lete naa. Tu ek baar mujhse baat to kar sakti thi naa.
[Ridhaan- I am your best friend, Riya. And we could have solved this issue together. You should have at least talked to me about this.]
Riya- I know RV that you genuinely care a lot for me, but aisi situations mein koyi meri help nahi kar sakta, and you too know this truth. Also, I have given this marriage thing a chance. Iss duniya mein koyi bhi meri family se zyaada bura nahi ho sakta. And it's just the last try at life.
[Riya- I know RV that you genuinely care a lot for me, but no one can help with these situations and you, too, are aware of this. Also, I have given this marriage thing a chance. No one can be worse than my family in this world. And it's just my last try at life.]
Ridhaan- You seriously want to do it?
(She nods sincerely at him, and he takes a sigh.)
Ridhaan- Okay then. If you have already made up your mind but dare to think you are alone, okay? I know main pehle study ke liye chala gaya tha, and you were alone, but now I am here. You have your best friend, and I will always support you.
[Ridhaan- Okay then. If you have already made up your mind but dare to think you are alone, okay? I know I went abroad for studies earlier, leaving you alone here, but now I am here. You have your best friend, and I will always support you.]
Riya (smiling)- Thank you so much, Ridhaan.
Ridhaan- Chal chal. Kisi aur ko thank you bol jaake. Mujhe nahi chahiye tera ye thank you.
[Ridhaan- Oh, come on. Thank someone else. I don't need you to thank you.]
Riya (chuckling)- Okay. No thank you. Happy?
Ridhaan- I am thrilled! But I have a patient to attend to main uss ke check kar ke aata hoon. Then we will have lunch.
Riya- Okay.
(Ridhaan leaves from there, and Riya sighs and thinks of her meeting with Manik.)
Riya- Uska naam to pucha hi nahi. Usko kitna bura laga hoga. Theek se bye bhi nahi kaha usko.
[Riya- I didn't even ask him his name. He must have felt bad about it. I couldn't even say goodbye to him properly.]
(She then gets busy with her work and later haves her lunch with Ridhaan.)
