Echoed Prelude
It was raining but he was dry.
The droplets tapped like falling pebbles. The resounding sound played in the sewer, in rhythm with the hollow clanks of his steps.
The tunnel was only lit by a haunting sapphire flame, illuminated out of his left eye.
He eventually ran into a ladder leading up. He extinguished his flame after staring at it, raising his eyes to see how high it went.
The chilled rainy air had snuck in, whistling to the silence.
He grabbed the bars, wincing at how cold it was. He firmed his grip before beginning to ascend the ladder.
It was a quiet climb, unnoticed throughout the night.
He reached the end, to be met by a locked hatch. He didn't let it stop him, he ignited his hand, stabbing it into one side of the hatch, burning a circle into it. He pushed and broke it off, gaining access to his goal.
He had reached the underground hideout of the Yakuza and he was here for only one thing.
Most members were sleeping in their quarters, giving him the chance to sneak around. He was walking through the passages with caution, there should at least be a few people patrolling.
Or maybe the rain kept the people cozy and slumbered.
The lab. He reached it. It was locked as he expected. Instead of burning it like with the latch, he picked the lock, he was supposed to enter and leave without leaving any evidence.
Once he broke in, he began to snoop around. He found a computer and it led to pictures, videos, records, experiment logs.
All of them, all of them, of a little girl named Eri.
He downloaded everything he could before he left the lab. He was hired simply to get the information on their secret... But this was more than he expected.
Now, he wanted them to know he was here.
He barged into every door he found looking for her and incinerating anyone who wasn't.
He reached a door that was locked. It had to be here. He slammed his hand on the door, unleashing a burst of fire, blasting the door down.
It awoke her, she instantly curled up in her blanket, hiding in the furthest corner but she couldn't pull her eyes away from him.
The smoke surrounded him making it hard to see him but that flaming blue eye was indistinguishable.
He didn't speak, he simply walked to her and picked her up in her blanket. As soon as she was in his arms, he began sprinting again.
At this point, he had caused enough of a disturbance, that cause people to investigate. He stayed out of sight as best he could, making his escape. He was almost to the sewer hatch but someone was in front of him.
She couldn't see much, wrapped in the blanket but she was able to see him do it.
He didn't stop running, heading straight at him. He had ignited his index and middle finger, using the scorching heat to pierce the throat, pulling it out just as fast, spilling blood.
She had to look away, not able to open her eyes.
Until,
The rain, it embraced her as they stepped outside. The gentle drops giving her a lullaby, the cold air smothering her in a hug, and the aroma was so calming. It gave her the courage to open her eyes and peek. Her lips parted as a droplet fell on her cheek.
The rain basking in the city night, to her, meant freedom.
"It's been seven years since then."
He was staring at a window as the liquid streams merged and broke apart. His reflection was vague. Vagueness, a quality embedded into every aspect of him.
She had finished writing in her journal and sighed. She could never recall the man who saved her, she could only stare out the window with the knowledge that they shared the same rainy sky.
