Rehabilitate

"What is it, Mello?" You ask.

"...Well...I like you... I have liked you ever since we first met at Wammy's House."

You wore a surprised look on your face.

"I'm sorry, Mello." You look down at the crisp, white sheets.

"No, it's okay. I know-we all know you're with Matt. I glad to be your close friend."

"I guess... But you should have told me earlier. I-mean, you've kept it from me for all those years." You softly speak.

"Matt, did you know about this?" You ask.

Matt nods.

"Near also knows, well, he sort of figured it out himself." Said Mello.

You nod, and look out at the scenery through the open window. An evening silhouette of LA spreads out before you, past the sleek, white hospital building. You're unsure on what else to say.

"The item of L's, what is it anyways?" Mello asks.

"Right, the item, the whole point of why I even bothered to put so much effort into solving the case. I can't believe I forgot all about it."

"I don't know. But I heard someone from Wammy's house is keeping the item safe. It was the very first thing we asked Roger when he woke up." Said Near.

"And, the person is coming here soon to deliver the item. Apparently, it can repair our ties, and fix our mental state."

"Like L's stories." You add.

Near nods.

"That person is also running the orphanage when Roger went missing. She's said to be the back-up Roger."

You suddenly hear the same clicks of the nurse's flats echoing down the call, starting towards the room. The nurse arrives at the doorway, with a familiar blue-eyed strawberry blonde girl in pigtails firmly clutching a sketchbook beside her. She also has a brown shoulder bag slung over her left shoulder.

"(f/n), you have another visitor, Linda."

"Well, speak of the Devil!" Exclaims Matt.

Linda warmly waved at you guys. You all wave back.

"Very well then, I'll attend to the other patients." The nurse left.

"(F/N)!" Linda runs up to you and hugs you tightly.

"Linda, I can't believe you've come to visit us!" You exclaim.

You and Linda were great friends back at Wammy's House, although she's kind to everyone, even the weirder, outcasts like Near. And in return, all the Wammy's kids adored her. Besides, she is one kick-ass artist, and would often prance around the orphanage, drawing portraits of the children in her sketchbook.

Linda then, hugs Mello, Matt and Near.

"So, how are you?" Asks Matt.

"I'm fine, just a bit jet-lagged though." She points to her eye-bags.

"So, how are things going with you and Matt?" Linda softly nudges you in the arm.

"Things have been going well."

"Are you two planning to get engaged, or married, or anything?"

You roll your eyes.

"Like we need a freaking ring to symbolize our "love" or whatever."

"And besides, a $50 000+ ring is way out of our budget." Matt adds.

"Oh, I see."

"So Linda, have you found anyone yet?" You ask.

Linda shakes her head.

"Well, I've heard that you have a thing for Near." Mello smirks.

Linda and Near both blush.

"Anyways, getting back to business, I believe you have L's possession, Linda. Am I correct?" Near implies, changing the subject.

"Yes, I do." Linda reaches into her shoulder-bag, digging around for the item.

"AH-HA! Here it is!" She holds out a simple, black, leather-bound book, with a white, gothic L on the cover.

"It's L's most recent journal." She explains.

Your eyes widen, once more. Ofcourse everyone wants L'S journal. Theywant to know what goes on inside the "century's greatest detective's "mindafter all.  Linda hands the book over to you.

"It's yours now. Roger wanted you to have the book once he sends you out to the world, but he couldn't since you well, left..." Linda's voice trailed off.

You recall the very day that you and Matt chose to run away from the orphanage...for good. Your fingers clutch the edges of the book a bit tighter.

(Flashback)

It has been a week since Mello has left, and nothing has been the same for you and Matt ever since. It felt like part of you has been broken off, and is casted out into the vast, but lonely world. It seems, Matt also feels that way. For the whole week, the two of you felt dead, dully attending classes, with the immerse pain of loss, sinking into the bottom of your heart. It was a clear night, with no clouds to veil the stars and the moon that shine brightly in the pitch, black sky. You and Matt were sitting on Matt's bed, looking up at the sky through the huge, glass-paned window. The moonlight shone brightly on you and Matt, bathing the two of you in its soft, light. Matt had an arm around your shoulders, trying at his best efforts to comfort you, but he eventually gave up.

"I can't carry on like this anymore." You told Matt.

"Me either. It just isn't the same without them around."

You knew that Matt meant L, Watari and Mello.

"We might have lost L and Watari, but we know that Mello isn't dead yet. He is still out there; God knows where he is." You spoke.

"But it's our job to find out. Mello's our friend after all. But on the other hand, we can't just leave the orphanage behind. That'll mean leaving Near, Linda and the others."

"You know what, fuck it! We are searching for Mello, I just can't go on like this, miserable. What is he dies out there without us by him? At least we know that Near, Linda and the others are safe." You declared.

"Yeah, let's go. Pack your belongings and write a note. I'll hack into the security system to disable the alarms and cameras." Matt agreed.

You and Matt packed your few belongings and some cash in a duffle bag and Matt managed to hack into the security system. You then, wrote a note on a scrap of paper explaining the reason behind your departure.

The two of you, walked past the iron gates in the cover of night, with only your knowledge, hypothesis and instincts to guide you to Mello.

(End of Flashback)

"I'm sorry for leaving all of you..." You apologized to Linda.

"It's okay, thank you for finding Mello, he's one of us after all." Said Linda.

"Anyways, since we're all here, (f/n) can I read an entry from the journal to you? You can pick which entry you want me to read." Matt asks.

"Sure!" You flip to the very last page of the journal.

You want to find the reason and meaning behind L's death, maybe the very last page will explain it.

"I want you to read this entry, the very last entry." You hold up the page, and hand it to Matt.

"Yeah Matt, please enlighten us in L's glorious tales!" Mello sarcastically remarks.

Matt rolled his eyes. "I will, but first I'll have to mimic L's signature sit to "enlighten" you guys like L."

Matt pulled his knees up onto the chair, and held the book in an awkward way that only L would hold it. Linda gets out her pencil, and opened her sketchbook to a blank page, ready to sketch when Matt starts reading.

"Ahem..." Matt clears his throat and starts reading.
