Epilogue
Your eyelids slowly flutter open, waking up from the first settling dream in years. Sunlight streams from the window, into the room. You slowly sit up, and see Matt and Mello, already sitting in chairs next to your bed, scrolling through their phones. Matt looks up from his phone, and sees you sitting, wide awake.
"Good morning, (f/n)!" Matt cheerfully says.
He rests his warm hand onto your cheek. You grin.
"Good morning, Matt."
"Are you feeling any better?" He asks, concerned.
You nod.
"Well that's good to hear." Said Mello.
The three of you conversed for the rest of the day, until it was time for them to leave you, again.
You stayed in the hospital for a few more days, slowly recovering. The number of tubes in your arms decreased a bit each day during your stay. Matt and Mello visited you every day. Sometimes they stayed with you for the whole day, other times, they dropped by for only a few minutes. Occasionally, Near would join you guys, bringing an assortment of toys along, with him.
Soon, you were able to stand on your own two feet again and leave the hospital.
The first thing you did once you could leave the hospital was to visit Roger. Roger took longer to recover, as he's broken multiple bones in his body, (apparently) was bleeding internally, andhe has to go through therapy. So, with Mello and Matt, you went and bought a bouquet of lilacs (Rogers favorite flowers from Watari's garden) and stepped inside his hospital ward.
Roger was sitting up on his bed, propped up by a few pillows. Most of his bruises are faded and gone, but he still has many fractures in his ribs, shoulder-blades and legs. Youhid the bouquet behind your back.
"Why hello, (f/n), Matt and Mello!" Roger spoke (well, more like wheezed).
"Has Linda given you the journal?" He asked.
You nodded.
"Good. I wanted to give you the journal once you leave Wammy's House, but you suddenly left one night..."
"But I'm glad the journal's safe in your hands, you must treasure it, treat it like your most precious item, or something more than that."
"I will, Roger. Thank you for risking your life to protect that journal for us." You thanked him.
"My pleasure."
"Oh, and we also want to give something to you:" You reveal the bouquet of the sweet-scented purple and white lilacs and place it in a vase, on a small table beside his bed.
"Thank you, (f/n), Matt and Mello! I'm glad that you remembered that those are my favorite flowers from Watari's garden." He grinned, a small, wry grin that lit up his whole face.
"Well, we better be going, get well soon!" Said Mello.
"Thank you. All the best for you too."
"Bye Roger, I hope the orphanage is doing well under Linda's care!" Said Matt.
"I hope so too, Matt."
"Bye Roger, we'll meet again someday!" You waved at him.
Roger waved back.
The three of you walked out of the door, and made your way out of the hospital.
Your life got hectic again. The minute you were able to stand, you had to get back to work, interviewing Roger, filling out mountain-loads of paperwork, getting through the long, enduring process of battling the criminals in court, etc. But in the end, all your hard work paid off and you were able to beat the organization in court and arrest their members.
"It's all over now, I appreciate all your hard work and dedication." Said Near at the end of every given case.
And Mello, well, Mello soon found someone else-a girl named Dray from Wammy's house. She's like the female version of Mello (reckless, quick-tempered and a M&M's addict). She also has jet-black hair and ice-blue eyes (like Mello). It was Linda who set the two up through calls and text messages, and apparently Dray was living in LA for all this time. So they've been dating for quite a while but they don't live together...yet.
Then, there's the relationship between you and Matt. Never have you remotely thought that the two of you are getting engaged, but that all changed one (faithful) day:
You were lounging on the couch, playing with Matt's DS, when Matt suddenly walked into the living room and announced:
"(f/n)! I'm taking you somewhere. Trust me, you'll like the place."
You quickly saved the game, closed the DS and sat up straight.
"What is the "place" exactly? "You asked.
"Oh, it's a surprise, wear this." He handed you a solid, black blindfold and helped you tie it around your head, over your (e/c) eyes.
You trust Matt, maybe a bit too much, but he really has no reason to harm you in any way.
Matt carried you bridal style (as you can call it) all the way to his car. Although you couldn't see, you could smell, feel and hear what was going on around you. He plopped you down on the soft, leather seat and you heard him slam the doors shut. You fumbled blindly for the seatbelt, but you gave up trying to buckle your seatbelt soon. Matt helped you fasten your seatbelt and he started the engine.
Matt sped through the concrete jungle of LA to the outskirts, and eventually past LA. Scenes whizzed past you, unseen. The destination's all but unknown to you. You weren't even sure if you're in LA or not, as Matt drove on for an awfully long time.
An hour later, Matt stopped the car, and you hear him open the doors. He carried you outside, and placed you, standing up. You could feel the soft sand under your feet, smell the fresh, salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze blow past you. You guessed that Matt took you to a beach. Matt removed your blindfold, and a serene scene unfolded before your very eyes.
You stood on soft, white sand, at the very edge of the beach. Palm trees gently danced and swayed in the breeze around you, and the water lapped calmly at the shore. The red, twilight sun was just dipping below the horizon, and the sky was dyed in various hues of scarlet, yellow, orange and violet. The colors were reflected on the shimmering, clear water. The beach was empty of figures; no one was present at this hour.
"Are we even in LA, Matt?" You asked.
"Nope, we're in Malibu. We've already been to all the busy beaches in LA."
"How did you find this place?"
"Oh, I drove around a lot, when I first got my car." Matt did his half-smile.
"Thank you Matt, this place is beautiful!" You exclaimed.
Matt beamed. He took you by the hand and gestured you to sit down, on the sand, near the shore with him. You removed your shoes as you stepped onto the sand. You both sat down, and he wrapped his arm around your shoulders, while the two of you watched the sun set. Warm, gentle water lapped at your now-bare toes. The two of you stayed like this for a while, in silence, cuddling each other.
"(f/n), I have something to tell you." Said Matt, breaking the silence.
"What is it, Matt?"
Matt dug into his pocket and pulled out a Pokeball. He opened the Pokeball, and the words:
"(f/n), (l/n), I choose you!"
Were engraved inside. A ring sat inside with a Pokeball made of red, black and white jewels in the middle instead of the traditional diamond. Of course-the gamer's proposal. But nevertheless, you are a fan of Pokémon.
"(f'/n), I choose you! I'm more than happy to spend the rest of my life with you...so let's forget about what I said the other day when Linda brought up the marriage subject. So, will you marry me?" Matt nervously spoke, his cheeks were tinted a light pink.
You were at a loss for words.
"Oh my God, Y-YES! Even though I'm being a hypocrite right now for not doing what I said the other day about not getting married." You smiled.
"And besides, the ring's adorable, of course you knew we both liked Pokémon!" You hugged Matt tighter.
Matt beamed, even brighter this time.
"Well, good, you know I saved the hell out of my earnings for this!"
"I love you, Matt."
"I love you too, (f/n)." Matt pulled you closer.
He leaned in and pressed his soft lips against yours. You kissed back, tongues meeting. The scent of cigarettes is gone now, as Matt had quit smoking for a while. You didn't let go, until you both run out of air (oxygen is so overrated).
"Tell Death Do Us Part..." You spoke and slipped the ring onto your third finger.
"Forever, and always." Matt responded.
"Well always be together, no matter what. And besides, our ties have been repaired." You said.

Well, I guess this story's done for now. You really have no idea how much I was fangirling while writing this chapter! I originally wrote this book because I wanted to cure my PDS (Post Death Note Syndrome). I miss the series so much, especially Matt. I wish he had more screen time. Well, there's more fanfics coming up to look forward to (I was thinking of doing a Levi (from AOT) x Reader next).
