Anesthetic

Later in the night, after hours of tiredly scrolling through his phone (taking advantage of the free, but shitty Wi-Fi), the nurse returned once again, letting Matt know that the surgery is over. Mello has already fallen asleep beside Matt, and he had to wake him.

"(f/n)'s in ward 456, you can sit beside her hospital bed if you wish."

Matt and Mello nodded.

"Okay then, follow me."

The nurse led them up pristine stairs. They walked up four floors, and turned a corner, into an equally white and pristine hall, lit by fluorescent lights. The nurse walked up to the door near the end of the hall, and opened it, beckoning Matt and Mello to come inside.

The nurse, then led them to a bed at the end of the room, right next to a window. Two plain, black chairs were placed beside the bed.

"(f/n) will return back to consciousness once the anesthesia wears off."

The nurse left, leaving Matt and Mello alone with you. Matt looks down at you, and winced at the sight of all the tubes attached to your arms. You were also plugged into a heart monitor. One could hear your steady, rhythmic heartbeat if they stood beside the bed. Matt gently presses his left ear against your rising and falling chest. He prefers to hear your true heartbeat than the robotic beeps of the heart monitor. Mello stands beside Matt, softly gazing at your peaceful, sleeping self. He ran his fingers through your silky, (h/c) hair. Although he wasn't allowed to, Matt tenderly pressed his lips against yours. You stirred a bit. Matt pulled away.

"Please hang in there." They both whispered.

                                                         ------------------------------------------------------------

You slowly open your eyes, sunlight peaked into the room. You rub your eyes, and look around the white, hospital room. You turn to your left and see Mello and Matt sitting on chairs beside your bed.

"Where the hell am I?" You sleepily mumbled.

"Well, you sort of had a heart-attack and went unconscious on us, so they had to wheel in an extra stretcher and rush you to the hospital." Matt explained.

You tiredly nodded, lacking the energy to freak out, or show the slightest hint of shock. Your eyes widen as you look down at the tubes attached to your arm. You caught a glimpse of your loose, white sleeve and notice that you are dressed in a hospital gown. You rub your eyes once more, no traces of mascara or eye liner stained your hands.

"I guess they have wiped my makeup clean and dressed me in a hospital gown." You assume.

"I guess the anesthesia hasn't completely worn off yet, you're still tired." Said Mello.

You nodded. "I guess so."

You feel a dull pain in your chest, it felt like it has been cut open.

"Oh, and they had to perform an open-heart surgery on you, if it doesn't freak you out." Said Matt.

"Well, that explains the slight pain."

You turn around, facing away from Matt and Mello. Something has been troubling you from last night. You could have sworn, you felt someone press their lips against yours and run their fingers through your hair. It would have most likely been Matt. You turn to face Matt again.

"Matt, did you kiss me last night?" It was surprising that you were able to ask such an awkward question.

"Yeah, you knew?"

"Well, I felt......something......"

"Did you also run your fingers through my hair."

"Mello did that."

Your eyes widen. It just seemed so out of character for Mello to do that.

"I was actually afraid that I will lose you." Mello lowered his gaze to the floor.

"Oh..." You also lower your gaze, unsure of what to say.

You hear soft, light footsteps, followed by the swishing of loose fabric make their way into the room. The same nurse walked up to your bed, with a certain visitor beside her.

"(f/n), you have a visitor." She gestured towards a particular albino kid, in loose, white clothing.

"Hey Near!" Matt greeted Near, and glanced at you and Mello, hoping for you guys to do the same.

"Hi Near!" You said.

"Umm, hey Near, I guess." Mumbled Mello.

"Greetings, Matt, Mello, (f/n)." Said Near.

"I've come to visit (f/n)."

"Well, no shit, Sherlock." Said Mello.

Matt shot Mello a glare, making him shut up.

"(f/n), are you okay?" Asked Near, as he held a delicate wisp of his white hair in between his slender fingers.

"Never been better." You sarcastically reply.

"The dulling pain in my chest just adds to my feeling of euphoria." You add.

Near nods, understanding your sarcastic comments.

"I want to speak to Mello privately for a moment, Matt, (f/n). If you would excuse us for a moment?" Said Near.

"Yeah sure." You and Matt replied in unison.

"Talk to Mello, IN PRIVATE? Wow, that kid sure has some guts."

Near pulled Mello aside, and the two conversed in the hall.

"Why the fuck are you pulling me over?" Mello whisper-yelled.

"I know that you like (f/n)." Near plainly stated.

"No I don't? And since when have I told anyone?" Mello denied.

"I know you do. Well, Halle figured it out. You know, she's good at that kind of stuff."

Mello scowled.

"So you're admitting it?"

 "Why should I?" Mello retorted.

"Give it up, we all know already. Even Matt."

"That's because I told him."

"So why is (f/n) with him instead of you?" Asked Near.

"Because she chose Matt." Mello flatly stated.

"Ouch..." Near remarked.

"And you've been hiding it from (f/n) for years."

Mello looked down at the glossy, white tiles and didn't say a word.

"You should tell her. I mean, even if she's dating Matt, at least tell her that you are glad to be friends with her." Said Near, breaking the silence.

"And here you are giving me relationship advice, and yet you haven't been in one." Mello smirked.

"That is none of your concern." Near countered.

"(f/n) seems fine not knowing."

"Trust me, you'll feel a lot better telling her."

Mello nodded. "Fine, I'll tell her...later. And DON'T you dare make me spill it out whenever you please!"

Near looked up at Mello with his slate, grey eyes.

"I won't. I promise."

"You better keep that promise, or else."

Near nodded.

"I think we should head back."

Near and Mello walked back into the hospital room.

"Thank God Near, you're still alive!" Matt remarked.

You smile. Matt, and his sense of humor.

You spent the rest of the day conversing about literally everything there is on Earth, while Mello's finding the right time to confess. Finally, as the sun begins to set and the room glows golden, Mello worked up the courage to tell you.... Near nudged him lightly in the ribs. Mello swatted his arm away.

"(f/n), I have something to tell you..." Mello lifted his gaze up to you.

Another chapter done! To be honest, I thought is was a bit cheezy, but I wanted to go through with is and finish the chapter anyways. There'll be more coming up, so you can look forward to that. Thank you for reading it anyways!
