"Hey, hey, everybody
We've got something to say
We may seem as different
As the night is from day
But you look a little deeper
And you will see
That I'm just like you
And you're just like me"
~My Little Pony Equestria Girls
This chapter is dedicated to @the-Ninjago-Nerds you've been commenting on this book since the beginning and your encouragement has made me so happy :) thank you.
Chapter title is a quote from Roger Miller
******
This was a terrible mistake.
Nya crouched under a large oak tree, shivering as her soaked maroon sweater stuck to her skin like gum to the bottom of a sneaker. Her legs were burning from the position but she couldn't risk sitting down and more rain sopping her clothes.
Dammit Wu, Nya grumbled to herself, why did you choose a place in the middle of nowhere?
Nya wasn't sure why she had walked so far. She and Kai shared the same temper so her emotions clouded her vision, before she knew it she had been deep in the forest around the school and had no idea how to get back. Nya has planned on using the sunset but unfortunately the storm had made it harder and harder to navigate. Nya pressed her middle finger and index finger into her mouth, releasing a high pitched whistle out into the dark.
Nothing.
Better hope Kai finds me soon. Nya sighed, rubbing her eyes and brushing her damp bangs away. Nya squinted at the sky, hoping to get a glimpse of something that could help her get back to the school. Is was a giant building in the middle of the woods for crying out loud!
"He better be looking for me." Nya muttered half-heartedly as she rested her face on her arms.

"WHERE IS WU?"
Jay and Cole struggled to keep pace with the fire ball as Kai barrelled down the hallway. He went straight for Wu's office, shoving past Mistaké's desk that was positioned outside of it. She was chewing on Bits 'n' Bites and watching stunt fails on her computer. "Don't go in there." She said in a distracted, deadpan voice. She was a little too late because Kai already had burst into Wu's office.
Jay puffed as he made his short legs go faster, Cole grabbed his arm and speeded him along, the two boys not paying Mistaké any kind either.
"Stop." Came the vacant, half-hearted objection.
Kai seemed to be raiding Wu's office when they got there. The old man was no where to be found.
"Uh... I don't think Nya would fit in his desk drawers." Jay pointed out unhelpfully.
"I know that." Kai growled, tossing papers across the room.
"Okay! Let's calm down for a second here." Cole said nervously, as much as he originally hated this place, he didn't exactly want to be expelled. "Why don't you tell us what you're looking for?"
"He's looking for Nya." Jay cut in.
Cole ribbed his temples. "Yes, we know that."
"Try the closet, Nya would be able to squeeze in there if she sucked in her stomach and crouched." Jay pointed at the armoire beside him. Kai brushed past the boys and yanked it open.
"Jay, can you shut up for a second?" Cole asked irritably.
Jay shut his mouth and zipped it. Pressing his lips together as he gazed around the room. A piece of paper wafted through the air and landed on his head. Cole and Kai were still bickering back and forth so Jay just sat down and glanced at the piece of paper.
Dear Wu,
As much as I hate to rush you I require a response to my previous letter.
I'm very sorry that you'll have to deal with the...
There was a bunch of blots and scratched until the writer settled on:
...temperamental child but he will just have to accept that he will eventually have to separated from his sister.
It is only healthy. Though I have full confidence in your teaching abilities, Kai's toxicity has already poisoned the poor girl and we just move her somewhere that she can grow up to be a good, normal person.
I know this may seem harsh but it is truly the right thing. Let me know when I can send a social worker to come and pick Nya Smith up to take her somewhere so she can cleanse her soul from her brother's horrible influence.
Thank you,
Gertrude Przbyszewski
Jay didn't realize his hands were shaking until Cole was kneeled beside him, a hand resting on his arm like an anchor. Cole's gaze flew to the letter, his eyebrows furrowing as he gently took it from Jay.
Kai hasn't noticed the two yet, still scrounging through important looking legal documents. Cole clearer his throat, eyes holding something unreadable.
"Kai..." Cole spoke softly.
Kai ignored him, flicking through files and then dropping them on the floor. "Kai!" Cole said again, his voice becoming urgent as he strode to the brunette.
"KAI!" Cole's hand grasped Kai's shoulder and he roughly turned him around. "What's this about?"
Kai gave him a look like: what-the-heck-dude but his body language changed as soon as he say the page in Cole's hand. Kai snatched it, breath hitching as he read over the letter, eyes widening with panic.
"No, no, no, no..." Kai murmured under his breath, a hand raking through his hair. "NO!"
Cole's hand tightened in his shoulder and he even shook Kai a little bit, brown eyes glaring into amber. Jay stumbled to his feet, feeling helpless as Cole made Kai look at him.
"What's going on? What's this about?" Cole demanded.
"What do you think, rock head!" Kai snapped, shoving the letter into Cole's chest and wrenching away. "They're going to take her away!"
Jay could practically see the stone cold boy crumbling like dry sand on a hot day. Kai let our a horrible scream, loud and heart wrenching as he shot his arm out. Jay flinched as all the contents on Wu's desk, the empty tea cup, the pencil holder, the neatly stacks books, all crashed to the ground. Cole stared in shock as Kai just stood their, eyes boring into the floor.
"Take her away?" Jay repeated, voice growing higher. "What do you mean take her away?"
"What do you think it means?"
Cole screwed his eyes shut, knuckles digging into his had as he tried to grasp what was happening. "Why would they want to take Nya away?"
"Why do you think, Cole?" Kai's voice was dangerous and low. "It says it all right there in the letter. Kai Smith is a freak with issues."
"We know that already but what does that have to do with your sisters horrible brother judgement?!" Cole shouted back at him.
"WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERE?" They all spun around, eyes wide as Mistaké.
The old woman's shrewd eyes squinted at them, her grey bun slightly lopsided, and old laptop still in hand, still playing the television show loudly.
"Er...organizing?" Jay tried.
*****
"Well that sucked." Cole harrumphed as they trudged into their room. "At least an early curfew isn't that bad of a punishment. We basically stay in our room anyways." The dark haired boy sat down where he left the cards and began to shuffle them.
"We can't just sit around and play cards, Cole!" Jay gave him a look that said I am very disappointed in you.
"What can we do?" Cole furrowed his brow. "This is Kai we're talking about- Mr. Stay-Out-of-My-Face and I don't fancy getting hit over the head by Mistaké."
Jay scrunched up his face. Thinking very hard for awhile. Cole rolled his eyes and decided to deal for him anyways as Jay pondered and puzzled.
"GUYS!"
Jay shrieked loudly and Cole jumped a foot in the air. "It's a GHOST!" Cole cried, grabbing his roommate and clinging to him.
"AHHHH!" Jay screamed.
"AHHHH!" Cole yelled back.
"AHHHH-"
"Shut UP idiots, do you want to get caught?" Kai hissed from the window, he carefully slipped his fingers under the glass and pulled it up.
Jay and Cole froze, it was an odd sight. Cole was practically on top of Jay and Jay was finally feeling his weight. They both toppled over with an "oof!"
"Kai!" Jay snapped, scrambling to the window and hauling the brunette inside.
"What are you doing? Were you trying to give me a heart attack? And-" he peered outside the window, the rain pouring into his head as he stuck it out. "How did you get over here, we're two floors up."
Kai rolled his shoulders and neck, cracking the bone with a satisfying crunch. "I parkoured it over." He said like it was obvious.
"Why?" Cole asked in exasperation.
"Wu gave us some lessons and I'm using the tools he gave us." Kai shrugged, moving back towards the window. "Now come on."
Jay chewed on his lip nervously, eyeing the drop. "I don't think this is what Wu has planned when he taught us this stuff. And need I remind you that I almost fell to my death?"
"You'll be fine." Kai waves him off as he swung his legs through the small frame. "You're short, you have a low centre of gravity."
Jay sputtered. "I'm not short!"
"Eh..." Kai made a so-so gesture.
"Hold on for a second-" Cole waves his hands in front of his face in a stop motion. "What's happening?"
Kai blinked. "I'm going to find Nya." He gave them a mock-solute. "Join if you want but I'm getting my sister."
Cole and Jay both scrambled to the window when he hopped off. They looked down to see him on the roof below. The moody guy looked pretty cheerful for a boy standing in the rain. Maybe he was doing that to annoy them.
"Well..." Cole sighed, backing up. "Are you coming?"
"WHAT?" Jay yelped. "This is a terrible idea!"
"It is." Cole admitted. "But I'm not getting expelled for letting hot head go out there by himself."
Jay made a weird noise in the back of his throat. After a moments hesitation Jay hopped outside the window. His feet landed on the wet shingles, it was slippery and he had to grip the window sill to keep balanced.
It was really storming, the water was sticking to his eyelashes, making it hard to see. The roof above him gave him a little bit of shelter at least. "Cole?" Jay shouted. "You coming?"
Something blue smacked him in the face. "Ow!" Jay pulled it off as he glanced up at a smirking Cole. "What was that for?"
"A waterproof jacket, motor-mouth." Cole zipped up his own before popping out of the window and landing beside him. "I don't plan on catching a cold."
"Oh. That makes sense." Jay slipped his hands through the sleeves and popped up the hood. "Thanks."
"Hurry up!" Kai scowled up at them, a hand over his eyes, droplets dripping from his hair. Soaking out the gel. "I don't have all day."
"Ready, Jay?" Cole glanced at his friend. "It's just like Master Wu taught us. A little hop there and a scurry here."
Jay groaned, running a hand down his face. "This is the stupidest thing I've ever done."
Cole laughed, bumping his shoulder. "Hey, on the bright side, Nya might see you as her knight in shining armour."
Jay perked up at that idea, Cole took that as his cue to start down to the next landing. Jay, feeling a little more confident now, simply leaped hazardously off of the roof. Cole yelled out, hand just grasping the back of Jay's jacket before he went flying down face first.
"Keep it down!" Kai hissed, popping up from around the corner. His eyes glaring into theirs scoldingly.
Cole sputtered. "But I-Jay-"
He was interrupted by an obnoxious. "Sshhhhhhh!"
Jay smoothed down his clothes, casting a smirk at his roommate. "Yeah Cole, shhhhh!"
Cole narrowed his eyes at his former dangerously. "I will push you." Jay quickly moved away from the edge.
They traveled from the building to the wall surrounding it. But they began to see a problem. They got down before with Wu by going through a window. But Wu wasn't here and Mistaké could sniff them out like a guard dog. Kai found a large tree growing against the wall, with some whining from Jay and some grumbles from Cole they landed with a soft splash in a giant mud puddle.
"UGH!" Jay picked up his feet, his jaw dropping as water literally poured out of his shoes. "KAI!"
"I know, I know." Kai rolled his eyes, sloshing through the brown water until he made it to higher ground. Cole grimaced as his socks squelched. Maybe he should've put on waterproof shoes.
"Where to now?" Cole sighed.
Kai winced. "I...don't know."
"You don't know?!" Jay yelled. "I just risked- my life- AND my best running shoes for you and you don't know?!!"
Cole had to grasp the boy by the waist when the ginger lunges at Kai. Kai intelligently stumbled away in surprise and landed on his butt in the wet grass.
"If you are looking for your kin than you may want to go east."
Kai had to slap his hands over Jay and Cole's mouths to muffle their screams as a still figure stood calmly in the rain. It was Zane. Who else would it be? No one could be soaked to the bone and appear to be perfectly fine at the same time. Jay's teeth were chattering and he was wearing a rain coat and a sweater.
"What- how did you get out here?" Kai whispered.
Zane blinked. "I walked."
There was a slapping noise as Cole face-palmed. Kai took a deep calming breath, attempting to keep the burning fire of irritation at bay.
"How do you know where Nya went." He said each word slowly and carefully.
"Her hard steps made impressions in the earth." Zane motioned to the tracks.
Cole whistled at the deep, water-filled, shapes. "She must've been pissed." Kai shot him a glare.
"The tracks will disappear as she becomes less upset." Zane informed them. "That is why I have this special device in case we get lost." He held up a small square with a blinking light.
Jay gasped. "That is awesome!" His hands snatched it from the blonde. His skilled eye identified random parts he'd see in the junkyard. "You build stuff too?"
Zane looked slightly miffed. "I invent and manufacture."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "That's literally a synonym for build."
For the first time Zane looked annoyed.
Cole jumped as lightning split through the darkened clouds. It was a ways away but still concerning. "We better get moving." Cole said warily.
Kai brushes his damp hair back, looking around at his companions. They each look grumpy and cold- well except Zane. But they all looked at him expectantly. Kai almost bore a shred of a smile as he turned and began to follow the track.
"Do you think I can get him to pay for shoe replacement?"
