Chapter 7 - Bending Limits
It took Marc and I around half an hour to reach an agreement before we were all able to head to bed and get some much-needed sleep. In the morning I was to give a small demonstration of my flexibility in exchange for a delicious hot breakfast and fresh coffee. Looking around the twins apartment, I knew I wasn't going to have enough room to be able to warm up properly, to show off what I was willing to share, so it was quickly decided that our demonstration and breakfast would be done in Marc's apartment.
I was up at the usual 5:30AM the next morning and Brandon and I made our way over to Marc's apartment so I could start warming up my muscles for what I knew was not something most people could do. Corey was still asleep when we left, using the pretence of having some work to do on his software as a reason to meet us at the other apartment at 8.
I was about an hour into warming up when Axel and Brandon went to get some balloons – I had insisted they buy I a new packet so there could be no accusations of tampering! I still hadn't seen Corey, but the notification I received earlier let me know he was looking at my old alias trying to find more on my past. I smiled to myself knowing they wouldn't find anything, Kitty had been a nickname and I had scrubbed the alias entirely when I moved from New York.
I am not sure how much later it was when Raven finally woke up and joined Marc in the kitchen. He clearly didn't remember anything from last night, as he began to question Marc. "Why is there a bird in the lounge room practically folding herself in half, where did the coffee table go and why do I feel like I have been hit by a bus?"
Marc laughed at Raven before replying, "That's Andy. We struck a deal last night and she is in there getting ready to hold up her end of it."
"What exactly was this deal?" Raven sounded distracted while trying to work out what I could possibly be going to do that would involve being folded in half. Marc quickly explained how he came to realise we had met a few years ago and that I had agreed to show them a couple of my more awe-inspiring tricks in exchange for pancakes, bacon, eggs and coffee.
"Ok, but where did you move the coffee table to?" Did Raven really have no idea what happened last night?
"You've no idea, do you?" Marc asked, grabbing the tablet off the kitchen bench. He tapped on the screen a few times before handing it to Raven. "You should watch this. It will explain why you hurt as much as you do, how you got the bruise on your back and what happened to the coffee table."
"Any chance I can get a copy of that? Uncle Phil wont believe it until he sees proof!" I asked from the lounge room, while Raven sat in silence watching the events of last night over again. He watched it another three times before putting the tablet down and heading into the bathroom.
"Is he ok?" I asked as we heard the shower start.
Marc didn't answer; instead he seemed to be lost in thought. It took me a minute to realise that it probably had something to do with the stretch I was now sitting in. I cleared my throat loudly to draw his attention back to the room.
"I am sure he is fine", was his only reply before heading back into the kitchen.
Corey arrived shortly before Axel and Brandon returned with the balloons. Marc even convinced Raven that this was something he wouldn't want to miss – he had retreated to his bedroom again after his shower and from what little noise could be heard while he was in there, I was fairly confident he had been cleaning his guns.
As I finished warming up I got the guys to decide who would be responsible for the balloons as I was only planning on doing the trick once. IT was something that I could only do a limited number of times in a row at the best of times, and it had been a while since I last attempted it. After some back and forth between them, they decided that Marc would be the one to do the honours. Once they all moved to the lounge, he quickly inflated the balloon before all attention was on me.
I started simple, easing them into what they were about to see – most people didn't handle my level of flexibility well, but I thoroughly enjoyed the reactions I got when performing. My simple chest stand had gasps coming from them. Oh gosh I was going to have some fun! I was just easing into it; my toes weren't even on the floor at this point.
I continued moving through the chest stand, placing my feet flat on the floor next to my face, before moving my legs out straight. Bringing my feet back in slightly, I lowered my derriere to rest on top of my own head. I had missed these reactions!
"Is she sitting on her own head?" Brandon was the first one to say anything since I had started moving through the process. I could hear the others agreeing that they were all seeing the same thing.
I moved my feet back off the ground, straightening my legs out, but maintaining my back bend. I moved my arms around from where they were behind me to rest my hands under my shoulders, before I pushed up to balance on my hands, while watching the guys sitting on the couch. I began lowering my right foot down next to my face, while moving my left foot to rest on my right knee, until I was sitting on my head once again.
"Should have waited till after I saw this before I showered" I heard Raven mutter.
Taking one last look at the awe, and even slight horror, on their faces, I moved my hips forward and my head back to be between my arms, touching my feet to the floor in a well-executed wheel pose. I held the pose for about 30 seconds before standing up completely.
"That was..." Corey started.
"I have never seen anything like that," Brandon continued.
"But what exactly is the balloon for?" Axel finished.
I couldn't help it, I was grinning like the cat that ate the canary! "Have you heard of the contortionist Zlata? No? Well Zlata is her stage name. Perhaps you know her as Julia Gunthel? I guess not. She is one of, if not the most flexible woman in the world. Still nothing? OK. Marc, I am going to move back into a back bend. When I get there, I want you to put the balloon against the top of the arch that my back will make. You will need to hold onto it until I close the gap and the balloon wont fall out. Then you can let go, step back and watch. Ready?"
From where I was standing, I leant back into a wheel once again and told Marc to move the balloon into position. I walked my hands quickly backward, toward my feet, before reaching up and holding onto my knees. Marc quickly moved back to the couch. I had made sure to be facing the wall rather than the couch before I started, which meant I didn't get to see their reactions, but they would all be able to see what I was going to do. Once Marc reached the couch, I pulled my shoulders back into the backs of my legs, essentially folding myself in half backwards, popping the balloon in the process.
When I stood up and looked at them, each guy wore a look of total disbelief and shock, their mouths opening and closing like they each had something they wanted to say but couldn't work out what. It was a couple of minutes before anyone was able to talk.
"Shit Kitty! I knew you were flexible, but that... I have no words for that!" It was at that point I realised Marc was always going to call me Kitty.
"Ok, so I get that that was an incredible show of flexibility on your part, but oh my god that was one of the most freaky things I have ever seen! That is just unnatural!" Brandon's reaction was one of the most common I received when showing off that particular skill.
Both Axel and Raven seemed to be lost in thought; I really couldn't blame them.
The silence lasted about another minute before Corey finally spoke up. "Andy, where exactly did you learn to do that? I imagine it would take quite some time to build up to that."
"Honestly?" That was a stupid question and I knew it. Of course they would want the truth, and the looks I was shot made sure I knew they meant it. "When I was 13 I ran away and joined the circus."
At that, they all burst out laughing, great big belly laughs; the kind that usually leave you struggling for air. Once they composed themselves, Axel spoke up. "No, seriously, where?"
"I love that you think I am kidding, since nearly every kid says they want to run away and join the circus, but I actually did. I left when I was 13 and didn't see Dr Roberts or Mrs Rose again until I was 19. You're welcome to call them to confirm if you want."
"кукла (Baby Doll), why did you run away and join the circus?" This was the first time Raven had actually spoken to me since I put him through the coffee table last night.
I decided to ignore the pet name when I answered him. "Everyone has a past Raven. Before Dr Roberts and Mrs Rose found me my life wasn't exactly a fairy tale. My past had started catching up to me and the circus was the easiest way to disappear." As soon as I said that I knew I had chosen the wrong word. At least they noticed the 'I don't want to talk about it' tone and didn't push it.
During breakfast the guys managed to talk me into staying the weekend, promising movies, food and laughter – who can turn down laughter! Marc had to help out at his café during the lunch rush, so he was heading out the door when Axel and Brandon both got phone calls. There was a customer at Brandon's shop who was being particularly difficult and refused to deal with Avery, so Brandon had to go sort that out. Axel got a call about a job for him and Corey. They would be back mid afternoon. That left me with Raven.
The plan originally had been that we would call over to my apartment so I could get some clothes and my laptop as I had to write a report for Phil, before heading back to the Sergeant Jasper and making a start on an action movie marathon. Since most of the guys were going to be out, I thought that it would be easier for me to just head home, get what I needed and then come back later today. Before I left though, I wanted to apologise to Raven.
I found him in the lounge room. "Hey Raven, I was just about to head out to grab my stuff, but wanted to talk to you before I did. I am sorry for reacting like I did last night. I hope I didn't hurt you too much when I flipped you into the coffee table."
"No problem кукла (Baby Doll), let's go get your stuff. You can tell my why you used me to break our coffee table later."
"You do realise I can go get my things on my own. It's not like I am going to run away."
"Maybe, but Axel would skin me alive if he knew I let you go on your own, worse if you didn't come back."
It was mid afternoon when the guys all got back and I had just sent my update to Phil when I got a notification through telling me my identities were being looked into. I started a trace but wasn't having much luck finding the source. I guess I must've missed an important question or a joke or something, because all of a sudden I had 5 sets of eyes on me.
"Andy are you ok?" Corey was the one to break the silence.
"I'm not sure. Corey, I am going to ask you something and you are going to have questions, but I need you to hold onto them for now. I need a straight answer from you, a simple yes or no. Can you do that for me?"
"I can."
"I know you attempted a background check on my current name when Phil asked Axel to employee me at the aquarium, and attempted one on Kitty this morning. Are you currently running another one?"
"How did you know..." I cut him off with a look. I needed the answer not questions. "No, I'm not running one now. Andy, what's going on?"
I felt the colour drain from my face. This was not good. I stood up from the lounge and started pacing. They were all looking at me for answers, but right now, I couldn't give them any. I needed to call Phil.
He answered on the third ring. "Andy, I just got your report. Sounds like things are going well! But what have I told you about calling me Dr Phil! It makes me feel like an over commercialised, under paid doctor. Andy? Andy, what's happening, are you there?"
"Phil, it's a code red..."
