Chapter 21 - Waking in the hospital
A/N: I am so sorry for the delay with the updates. I was having a hard time working through some writer's block... I am hoping I am past it now. It is a short update. Shorter than I had planned and it deviated from where I thought it was going to go. Thank you for sticking with me!
I was vaguely aware of waking up for a few moments on the grass outside my apartment and then again in the ambulance. I don't remember the details, just that I was surrounded by people on the grass outside, and I felt cold and lonely while in the ambulance. I was awake as they wheeled me into the emergency department and then nothing as I was sucked back into the empty abyss.
I had no idea how long I spent unconscious, but as I started coming around again, the steady beeping of the heart rate monitor reminded me that I was in a hospital. I could also hear the low murmuring of voices coming from across the room. It took a few attempts for me to be able to actually open my eyes, but the moment I did I wished I hadn't. The harsh lighting in the room had me slamming my eyelids closed again. I must have also made some kind of noise because the murmuring stopped almost instantly.
"Sorry Andy," Sean called with a chuckle as he turned the lights down. "We didn't know how long it would be until you were with us again. I've turned them down, you can open your eyes now."
I hesitated a moment before blinking my eyes open. I wasn't surprised to see the entire Toma team standing at the end of the bed. Phil was missing though. I could only assume he was somewhere in the hospital at the moment. I knew that there would be a reason I was in here, but the details were a little fuzzy.
"Alright, everybody out! I need to check over my patient and you will give her the same privacy that Phil gives each of you when you come in injured." Sean called. He pinned them each with a hard stare, showing there was no room for argument. "You should go find Phil. He will want to know she is awake."
"He's right," Axel said. "And now we know that Andy is awake and not in immediate danger, Marc has an appointment he needs to get to. Marc and I will head to the appointment. Corey, Raven and Brandon, you three head home and clean up. We will meet back here later."
"Oh, and when you come back you might consider replacing the jello and pudding that you ate earlier. Andy will need to eat something." Much to my surprise, Corey was the first one to look guilty at Sean's request.
"Wait", I croaked out before ending up in a coughing fit.
They all paused at the door as Sean handed me a glass of water to sip on.
"We need to check how damaged your throat is, sweety. Try not to talk too much." He told me.
Resigned to the fact my throat was currently too damaged to let me talk, I turned to Sean and started signing.
"Do any of them know sign language?" I asked.
After a few moments, Sean repeated my question out loud. "Andy wants to know if any of you know sign language."
They all replied they weren't able to follow more than the basics of sign language. This was an advantage for me.
"Tell them to be careful."
Sean relayed my message.
"Andy, Marc took care of James. He won't be an issue anymore." Corey replied.
"We don't know he was working alone. Please just tell me you will be careful."
After Sean relayed my concern and they saw how serious I was, they assured me they would be careful before leaving me alone with Sean.
"Alright, Alexandria. Now the boys are gone I am going to check you over again and fill you in on your injuries, all while berating you for not using those self-defense lessons we helped you with." Sean told me with a smile.
It was around thirty minutes later, as Sean was winding up his speech about not forgetting my training, that Phil finally walked in. His eyes lit up and a smile graced his face when he saw that I was awake and sitting up.
"I just finished telling Andy that she won't be able to talk very well for a few days. She has been signing with me and trying to get me to stop being angry at her for forgetting her training. Based on the situation she found herself in, I'm sure she just froze. She hadn't seen James since we got her out of New York. We will be working on that though." Sean still wouldn't let up. I knew that I would need to keep training and working toward not freezing when faced with someone I know.
After giving Sean an unhappy look, I turned to Phil and started signing again.
"James isn't smart enough to pull this off on his own, and Roy seemed even more clueless. He missed things and got things wrong when showing me around the aquarium. Sean, I have an idea of the person sending people after me, but I am going to need Victor's help. Corey and the rest of the Toma team can't know anything. Phil, I am going to need new electronics and identification again. And, we need to officially retire this alias. Alexandria can't continue to exist."
"What're you saying, Andy?" Phil asked.
"I need Sean to officially pronounce Alexandria Roberts as dead. You then need to go into the Academy database and change every alias you have listed against me as deceased. It will buy us some time for Victor to track Kayli, Blake, and Doyle. While she left on her own, Blake blamed us for the hurt she felt. You stopped tracking Blake after a couple of years, but did anyone keep tabs on Doyle?"
I stopped talking and waited for them to process what I was saying. It didn't take long for Sean to have Victor on the phone and them both to be moving ahead with my plans. They seemed to understand what was happening and the importance of following up to see if my suspicions are correct. I just prayed they all kept this information from the guys until we knew for sure. Who knew what they would do if I was right.
