Chapter 54: Decisions
"Logan?" Her voice called out to me again. Unable to speak, I just stared at my friend. Izzy and I hadn't really spoken since I told her of her brother's death. To say things between us were a bit hazy was an immense understatement.
Asher must have seen the fear that was mostly likely etched across my face. Without missing a beat, he reached over and took the phone from my slack grip. I felt paralyzed, unsure of how to react to her calling.
"Isabella? Hey, sorry about that. I was just a bit surprised to hear your voice. How are you?" His tone was friendly and calm, something I would not be able to manage at the moment.
"Umm...I'm okay, I guess, but uh... Is Logan there?" She sounded so unsure, not like the Izzy I used to. Had me walking away from her made her feel that way. I know, I should have stayed, talked with her, but I couldn't, not in the wake of everything that had just happened. Asher's eyes darted to me from a brief moment. Internally I prayed he would say no, make some sort of excuse. I needed more time to compose myself.
"Yeah, he's here. Hold on a second." Shaking my head, I refused to take the phone from him. Asher placed his hand over the receiver.
"Logan, you need to talk to her. Both of you will feel much better once you have talked. So stop acting like a child and take the damn phone." He was right of course, but it didn't make putting the phone to my ear any easier.
"Iz-zy, ahem. Izzy?" Great, I couldn't even get one word out before my voice broke. Come on Logan get it together, I chided myself.
"Hey, I just wanted to make sure you got back home okay," she said.
"Uh, yeah fine," I replied before realization hit me. "Wait, how did you know I wasn't here?"
The silence on the other end stretched on for a few minutes. Asher, who had busied himself looking through some of the older books on my shelves, stopped and looked at me. His confused expression matched my own.
"I overheard my father speaking to one of his trackers," she answered in a hushed tone. "They mentioned you running off towards Alpha Gray's territory." I am not sure what bothered me more, the fact that Phillips had a tracker following me or that I hadn't even realized I was being followed, to begin with.
"Look, I know I have been a little all over the place since we met about this whole mate thing, but I," she cut off mid sentence. If it weren't for her breathing, I would have been certain she hung up. "I--I gotta go," she mumbled before ending the call.
What had just happened? All the training I received over the years told me I should have been focused on the fact that Phillips was watching me, but I couldn't. All I could think about was Izzy. Was she okay? What had she been about to say?
"Logan, calm down before you need to buy a new phone."
I hadn't even realized the strangled gripped I had on the receiver. Releasing the phone, I watched as the blooded began to flow back into my white knuckles. Thought that she might be in danger, even within her own pack, had me on edge. She belonged here with me where I could ensure her safety.
"I need to get her out of there," I thought aloud. Already Asher was shaking his head.
"You know that that is not a good idea especially right now. Phillips is not going to allow his daughter to come here and if you try and grab her it will give him reason to come back and finish what you two started. I know it sucks, but I am sure he would never do anything to hurt his own child," Asher tried to reason with me, but his words did little to settle my wolf or me.
"How can you be sure of that? What if he does something to her to get back at me?" My question came out more imploring than I intended.
"Have you met his wife? She is a much stronger woman than everyone gives her credit for, and she doesn't seem like the type to let anyone mess with her family mate or not."
The memory of Victoria Phillips standing in the middle of the forest in nothing more than a nightgown came rushing back. Even then she seemed like a someone no one would want to mess with. She had had the gall to come to my territory to make sure her daughter was safe.
"Okay, so what I just leave her there under her father's thumb?"
"No, but for now. We need to get our house in order before we deal with anything else, which includes you making that call to Alpha Davidson," he reminded me.
"I don't think calling him is the right move," I began, and by Asher's expression, I could tell he didn't agree. "Look if someone was going to inform me that Griffin was dead, I would want them to do it in person. I would need to be able to look them in the eyes and see that it was true and to know they weren't involved." Did I really want to be there to see his face when he got this news, no, but I knew it was the right way to do it?
"So you off again then?" Asher asked not sounding too pleased with the idea, and to be honest neither was I. Leaving my pack when emotions were running high was one thing but now to leave after everything I saw and having had time to think clearly was another. They need their alpha to be present and show strength, and I would do that for them.
"First thing tomorrow morning. Right now I need to make my rounds throughout the pack and made get my arm taken care of," I replied giving my misshapen limb a quick glance.
"Thank goddess, that thing is seriously disturbing me, and not to mention ruining my appetite."
