Chapter 33: War Is Brewing
"What do you mean your dad is on his way here?" I asked. She did respond to me. Instead, she just stared at me unseeing, a far off look in her eyes. She must have been linking with her mother. A moment later she shook her head giving me a sad look. "She says he wants to come to speak with you but won't tell her what about." She let go of my hand and took a step back. I felt a small pang of hurt that she was trying to create a bit of separation between us but did my best to ignore it.
"Maybe he just wants to come speak with you," I suggest. Izzy shook her head firmly.
"No, that can't be it. I didn't tell either of my parents about us or me being here, and I only told my mother about me possibly finding my mate," she said her face full of worry.
"Maybe she told him after we spoke in the woods the other day." Again she shook her head.
"She wouldn't have, and even if she had he would have said something the last time I visited. No, he doesn't know I am here. Whatever reason he has for coming here has to do with you and your pack." As her words sunk in, I began to wonder what other reason he might have to come here. The only thing I could image was he was coming to start a war, one I was not prepared for.
"I need to go. I need to try and stop him before he gets here," she said, her voice starting to sound frantic. She must come to the same conclusion I had only moments ago.
"What?! No. Are you crazy? You are not getting involved. This is between your father and me," I said firmly. There was no way I was going to allow her to put herself in the middle of this.
"If he is coming for a fight, you won't win. Crescent Moon is easily double the size of Mountain Ridge," she said her eyes filling with tears. I hated seeing her like this. I could feel my wolf whimpering, wanting to comfort her. What she said was right, but if he was coming to start a war there wasn't much either of us could do now.
'Logan you have a call,' Griffin informed me. 'It's Alpha Phillips.' I could hear the disdain in his voice as he said his name. If he was calling maybe it wasn't as bad as I had thought.
"Your dad's on the phone waiting to speak with me." She looked up at me her eyes wide. I swiftly jogged back to the pack house with Izzy following close behind. My mind was reeling with questions. I didn't know what to think. Alpha Phillips was manipulative and conniving that made him extremely dangerous.
"Did he say what this was about?" I asked Griffin as I entered my office. Griffin had been sitting at my desk just staring at the phone. Looking up at me, he shook his head.
"No, but he did not come across as being happy," he informed me. I walked over to the receiver pausing for a moment before picking it up.
"Hello, Alpha Phillips," I greeted him curtly.
"Blackwell," he replied his voice full of contempt. "I offer you my men, even a solution to save your pack, and how the hell do you thank me?!" He roared through the phone. My first response was to laugh. He had only offered me his men to butter me up before he offered me his so called solution. He didn't deserve my thanks nor would he ever get it. I took a deep breath as my grip on the phone tightened.
"What the hell are you talking about, and how dare you call me to--." He cut me off before I could finish, only fueling the fury boiling inside me. I could feel my body begin to shake with rage.
"You know damn well what I am talking about!" I looked at Izzy realizing he must know. I hadn't expected the man to be entirely pleased when he found out. Well, to be honest, I wasn't really sure how he would react, but I certainly was anticipating this level of anger. "Your beta was seen creeping around outside my pack house, and now my son is missing." I nearly dropped the phone from my hand in disbelief. This had to be some sort of trick.
"We had nothing to do with that," I told him after a moment, trying to keep calm.
"Then why the hell was your beta trespassing in my territory?" I looked to Griffin not sure how to answer his question. Griffin had gone into Crescent Moon territory without permission. He had trespassed, but I didn't think telling him that he had been following his daughter was the smartest thing under the circumstances. Griffin cursed under his breath. He stared up at me his face showing a mixture of emotions, the primary being guilt.
"He was trailing the scent of a rogue we caught just inside our borders," I told him. There was shuffling on his end, followed by muffled voices.
"I don't take kindly to being lied to," he replied menacingly. "If my son is not returned home completely unharmed by the end of the day there will be war." And with that, he hung up.
Izzy's eyes went from me to Griffin. Before I had time to even register what was happening, she launched herself at me knocking us both to the ground. She probably would have attacked Griffin, but I had been the closer target. She wrestled with me as I tried to restrain her hands, which turned out to be quite difficult. She was much stronger than she appeared to be. Griffin wrapped his arms around her, pulling her off of me.
"Let me go dog!" She yelled, struggling against his hold. "What did you do?! What did you do?" Her screams quickly turned to sobs as she broke down crumpling against him. I reached out to touch her face, but she turned away from me.
"Nothing, I swear. We had nothing to do with your brother's disappearance," I told her trying to get her to look at me. I wanted her to see that I wasn't lying. I wouldn't lie to her. "Griffin was there, but he had only been there because he had been following you." Griffin released her, backing away a bit. The room became still, only Izzy's quiet sobs could be heard. She wouldn't look up at either of us, keeping her face hidden in her hands.
"That only makes it worse," she spoke quietly a false calmness to her voice. Slowly she raised her head, the sadness held within her eyes tore at my heart. I had seen her cry before but this, this was different. She seemed broken like she had lost all hope. "If you didn't take him then who did? Eric, he is not like me. He loves the pack and loves my dad even more. He would never leave without telling my dad where he was going."
I now understood what she was telling me. If I didn't take him someone else must have. The only question now was who.
