Chapter 8

                                                     ~Joy~

I just came back from the stream, the foul taste of herbs still lingering in my mouth, but it was faint. I shook my head to rid any reminisce of water still clinging in my fur. I trudged back to camp, it being a bit empty. I shrug my shoulders. I bet some went out to hunt. Leaves rustled as a patrol enter camp, the delicious scent of deer surrounding them. My mouth drooled at the aura. My He joined me, his eyes flickering with bliss.

"Oh dear, looks like we are having deer for supper." My He, Oak chuckled. I scoffed at his terrible joke, noticing the supposed to be a humorous part. Oak didn't catch on to my expression, pushing his awful joke.

"You get it?" He snickered. My ears flicked on annoyance.

"Dear like dear Joy? And Deer as in the ani— eh nevermind." He coincided. I snort in amusement, my He wasn't the smartest, but he sure was entertaining. The rest of the pack circled the dead deer, smelling it's carcass, inhaling its delightful smells. I see Whisper enter our camp, eyes assorted with fear and elation. I call over to Whisper, inviting him to sit next to me, he darted to me hastily. I giggle at his excitement.

"Did you catch that deer?" I cocked my head, his snout twitched quickly to present a snarl.

"Not exactly." He retorted, voice sewed with bitterness and aggravation. He explained to me the story, how they found the deer and almost took it down. Clarifying how it got away when Twig got a blow to the stomach and when the deer took advantage of the space to speed away. How Strike took it down, surprising the entire patrol, the patrol more bewildered as Jay and Night interfered with the brawl, asking why Strike was on their territory.

I was in a frenzy when Whisper explained to me that Strike shotback at them, telling them that the territory wasn't theirs and was Frostpack's when it clearly belong to Firepack. Whisper explained how Jay quarreled Strike out of anger, only to have Whisper meddle when Jay was slipping from conciseness. My jaw opened agape at the tale. My head whipping around to look for the slim gray fox.

"Jay is in the healers den." Whisper braught his wet paw to his ear. I sighed in relief. "Poor guy got strangled by Strike in the fight." I felt my fur stand up on end a bit, doesn't that fox know when or  when not to fight, how to correctly pounce and retrieve moss for the seniors' nests??

"Jay is going have to learn Firepack's ways sometime soon, he's causing lots of trouble." I huffed. Whisper nodded in agreement, stifling a bit of laughter.

"Yet his hunting skills assisted our pack critically. I guess he just needs to learn how to not stick his nose into anyone else's business. I heard the only reason Jay and Night showed up the way they did is because Jay wanted to see the stream that Night was going to." Whisper confessed. "I'm pretty sure Jay is going to get a good chiding once he wakes up." He finished.

I cringed as my imagination displayed Jay in his nest, his ear chuffed by Night as he was giving him a lecture such as, "kit, you have no idea how reckless that was." or "Stop meddling with others' business. Or else I put you on moss duties for the seniors for an entire moon!"and Jay protesting with some comeback like, "stop calling me kit, I have a name now you know?" Except, Jay looked up to the older fox and didn't snap back at the leader as often.

I chuckle. The image dwindling away in my head as I head towards the preypile. Foxes surrounding it while conversing with their chums. I ripped part of the deer's leg off, cleaving it between Whisper and I. We gnawed at the juicy meat, running our tongue over our lips every moment or two.

"Hey guys." A young, scratchy voice sounded from behind us. We twist our head around to be met with Jay. He held a scrawny shrew in his clenched jaw. Whisper and I scooted over, cresting room for the little gray fox. He provided a soft smile as he lay next to us, chewing on his supper.

"So Jay," Whisper eyed him. "How do you feel after your little battle with Strike?" Jay thought for a bit, finalizing his chewing and gulped.

"I'm fine." He insisted, "my throat hurts a lot though." Jay explained, biting at the shrew He was eating. Whisper hummed in reponse before yawning,

"I'm going to sleep, night guys," Whisper said drowsily, trekking towards his den to crash for the night. I nodded, finishing the deer's leg before falling alsleep in my own snug bed. Sighing as the night winds blew me to sleep.

It was dark, I was in my den. I shifted in my nest, the leaves crumbling apart as I moved. I thought to myself, that was odd. The breeze gusting through my den as the leaves were carried away in the darkness of the night. I traipse out of my den, my mouth open in a frenzy. I look out, the camp was shriveled up to dry pieces of earth. All of if blowing away in the wind.

I shake my head in fear. Covering my ears with my paws. After what seemed like moons, the wind faded away, I look up, peering around the camp, or what was supposed to be camp. The camp was gone, all that stood was the tall stone where Night hosted pack meetings. Leaves and stones were littered around, trees were in a monotone color. The dullness driving me slightly paranoid. I peeped around, then something caught my eye.

"J-Jay." I stammered at the gray fox. His eyes emotionless while he spoke in a soft, threatening voice.

"One little fox will lead the way.

While his loyalty is tested the camp may not stay.

During his test of determination, fates are being held for our nation."

I stared at Jay, mouth agape at the riddle as a gust of wind blew Jay away like sand in the breeze. What could it mean? Was it a prophecy? Is Jay the cause of chaos and destruction for Firepack? But one stood out to me the most.

Why?

I jolted awake in a matter of seconds, it was dark, I was in my den. I shifted, leaves crumbling apart as I moved, I thought to myself. This is odd. The Breeze gusting through my den as the leaves shook. I darted out of my den like in my dream before, running into Jay.

"Joy!" He yelped, his eyes were crazy with anxiety and dispair. My limbs worked without my permission as I enveloped him in a warm embrace.

"I had a dream, it's was terrible! It was windy and then the camp was gone!" He weeped, going on how it reminded him of his She and He. I zoned out. He had the same dream as me.

"And then when the wind like whispered this weird riddle I was awake!" He confessed.

"Wait! What did the wind say to you?" I commanded with force, he looked at me in pure terror, I softened my face a bit.

"It said this: 'Everytime the sun comes by

Leaves will crisp and eventually fly,

While the pack fights this crisis, someone seeks for a solution and greatness." Jay was on the verge of tears now, his limbs shaking in horror.

"One little fox will lead the way.

While his loyalty is tested the camp may not stay.

During his test of determination, fates are being held for our nation." I tack on to Jay's riddle, I watch as his eyes widen.

"The riddles! They go together!" He gasped,

"Well noticed." I smirk, Jay shakes his pelt, his dismay washing away.

"Until Leaf and Sun have been seeked,

Death and the packs will eventually meet,

Though their will never be peace that lasts forever, life will get better with improving weather." Someone murmers. I snap my head around.

"Whisper!" I called softly. He shushes me, reminding me of the sleeping foxes.

"Oh, right." I whisper. We scramble towards Night's den, paws tingling with excitement to boast about the prophecy we've received. I grommed my pelt quickly, trying to look decently presentable to Night while Whisper's fur was ruffled and Jay had bedhead. I took a step closer to the enterance of Night's den taking a den breath, a growl sounded from the den. I heard pawsteps pacing back and forth.

"Night, you must settle down! I know your upset about the prophecy but we need to be patient." I heard Moon say, my ears perking up at the mention of the prophecy.

"Patient? How can we be patient when two of the packs are missing! Let's not forget the destruction of the Fire season when it comes! Frostpack will freeze everything while we thaw it out! The vegetarian is going to fade away if we don't get Leafpack and Sunpack back In the picture!!!!" Night snarled. Murmurs continued throughout the den, I shook my head in disbelief.

Jay, Whisper and I were supposed to find Sunpack and Leafpack and bring them home. That's so much pressure, let alone we are just trainees! The guardian foxes must be out of their minds! I look back at Jay and Whisper with sorrow in my eyes. Whisper's were filled with determination while Jay's eyes held an array of emotions.

"We got to go. The sooner the better." Whisper announced, Jay bounced up to the larger fox, fire now flaring in his eyes, I guess he agreed as well. I sigh looking down at my paws, I breathe in heavily.

"Okay," I narrow my eyes as I nod my head. Right, when I said these words it seemed as if the world became purple.

"Let's go."
