Chapter 4
~Kit~
'Kit.'
I haven't been called kit since my He died. The grief dragged me down as I stumbled my way into the camp, wincing once again. My shoulder wasn't really helping either, It was probably infected, I realized as I went near the lake not too far to clean my cuts. I staggered towards the lake, sitting myself down in the soft dirt as I tended to my own wounds. I can fend for myself, I don't need that pack's pity. I thought scornfully to myself. I looked at my reflection, my fur was stained with blood, I wrinkled my nose at the odoriferous scent. I washed, the blood dripping off my pelt with the water. After I finished the blood I decided to start on cleaning my cuts and wounds, I took a paw full of water, flinching in pain ever so slightly as pain shot through me when I dabbed by wounds lightly with my paw. My ears twitch to the sound of paws scuffling the ground.
"Hey kit," A voice said, I looked back to see that black and white fox again. I hear the other foxes call him Night.
"H-hey." I stuttered, "Night?" I asked, cocking my head. I watch as he nods his head in approval.
I see Night sit himself next to me, his tongue ruffly cleaning my pelt, washing away the debris and dirt. I wanted to duck away but the touch of the action felt really comforting, it was like my She cleaning my pelt before she passed. I felt myself melting from the gesture as I felt Night's tongue brush on my cheek. I felt him stop and huff. He looked at me with a question in his eyes.
"Where are your pack and kin, Kit?" He asked.
It was my turn to huff as I feared my gaze from him, looking at my scratched up paws.
"My kin......my kin passed." I confessed tearfully, doing my very best to not bawl infront of Night. "I was separated from my pack soon after the last storm, that white and grey fox, Joy was it? Tells me that there is another coming soon." I felt his head and ears droop. I then feel the comfort of Night's fur pressed against my own, I let myself be engulfed by the other fox, letting myself breath in his furry chest.
"I'm sorry Kit ." Night said, breaking the silence. I felt myself struggle in Night's warm embrace, unfamiliar with the action but taking in his scent. "Let's go back to the camp shall we?" Night spoke softly as if I was a kitty about to run off. I hesitantly nod my head, not trusting on the words that would come out of my mouth if I spoke.
Night led me to his den and told me to make myself comfy. I tucked my paws under my stomach, my gaze still directed at my Moss I was laying on. Night sighed and spewed questions at me.
"Do you know where you pack is?"
"No, we were separated, if I knew where they were I would be with them by now."
"What is your pack called."
"I believe it's called Leafpack." I confessed, I look up in time to see small surprised blinks come from Night. I turn away for a split second, and look back but he has the same expression as I saw before.
"Kit, what caused you to end up in our camp."
The question catches me off guard, I think Night could hear the breath stuck in my throat. I fidget as I tell him the story. How I ended up almost dead in a ditch and how I crawled out barely on time and how I woke up and caught some breakfast before running into Moon as following her to the camp. Night seemed interested in my story. He looked down to his paws. I started to worry, did I say something wrong? I watch as Night looked up at me once again,
"Kit, are you willing to join Firepack?" He looked at me with hope blazing in his eyes.
Speechless, I nodded my head swiftly, joy filling me like water filling up in a lake after a flood. He smiles at me, I return the smile, smiling for the first time in days. He led me out of his den and gathered his packmates around a big, tall rock.
"I call for all available foxes of Firepack to join together for a meeting." He yowled, foxes with all colors and patterns of pelts gathered around. I easily recognize Whisper and Rain in the crowd, but I sadly remembered that Joy, Soot and Moon were in the medicine den. I snap my attention back towards Night as he starts his speech.
"With pleasure that this young fox has helped and assisted our pack." Night started. "With great joy that he has agreed to the terms to join Firepack." He claimed, the crowd barked up with acceptance, I was buzzing with pride as my now packmates welcomed me. The noise settling down as Night spoke up once again.
"Kit, what is your name?" Night cocked his head.
I felt uneasy as the crowd quickly quieted down to here my response. I felt everyone's eyes on me, I shuffled my paws in uncomfortableness.
"Uhhhh....I-I don't really..have a name." I said self consciously, ready for everyone to bark at me and throw me out but it never came much to my surprise.
"That's alright, any names to suggest?" Night bellowed.
I stiffened, I hope I get a good name, not a goofy name like Rabbit or Honey, how would I be taken seriously with a title like that? Like, hello, welcome! You will he meeting your packmates today! To start this is Rabbit. I barley heard myself giggle at the thought of it. Names were thrown around,
"Gray."
"Storm."
"Steel."
"What's for diner?"
"Silver."
"Jay."
"Lynx."
I watch as Night's ears perk up to the name 'Jay', I had to admit it but I like the name Jay. Night flicked his tail to signal for the pack to quiet down, the ruckus died down as Night announced my new name.
"It has been decided, this fox's name will now be Jay!"
The pack cheered, I liked my new name, my new pack and my new friends. I felt a warm feeling fill me. Maybe things are starting to turn around for me.
