Chapter 20
~Joy~
My eyes were wide with surprise, wincing as I heard the thump as the little terrier hit the ground, the disgusting faint sound of the dog Whisper called Layka's bones.
"I'm sorry." Whisper mourned. Jay sauntered over to the Firepack fighter.
"It's alright, she didn't want help. Layka sealed her own death." Jay mewled softly, nuzzling Whisper so he could look up. My lips pressed in a thin line.
"We should move as close as we can, we have a little less than two moons." I state half-heartily. The two He's nod, following me as I trek higher up the mountain.
Yell's of an unknown language chorus in the cold air. Laughter and grunts. I look around, the voices coming from the north. Curious, I dart forward towards the peculiar sound. The paws paddering on the ground. Two baldpelt's sat in a carved den, a mini sun illuminating their shadows. I take a step towards the minuscule sun, sniffing it. One of its arms licked my nose, it being hot. I yelp back in surprise, Jay and Whisper scuffling back as well. I sniffed the new discovery once more, more aware. It's fire. I realize in awe.
"Fire." I breath, the fire flickering at the touch of my breath.
"Fire?" Jay inquires, intrigued. I nod at the two with a grin. A gust of wind blows, the fire sways along in the breeze, singeing my nose in the hot combustion. I give a cry of pain, stepping back, knocking over Whisper and Jay as they fell on a pile of wood with a crack.
The voices stop before speaking again, caution edging their voice. A hear a boomstick click, i stiffen. Their is movement and shuffling in the den. Two baldpelt's reveal from inside the den, brushing the den away as if it were a bunch of vines. Their eyes are sparked with awareness as one with a red jacket and brown hair yowled unknown words into the abyss. My ear twitches as i hear paws. The three of us look behind to see a mob of foxes, their teeth bared.
"Intruders." A ginger fox snarled in defiance. The pack closed in,
"Woah, woah, woah!" Jay awed, catching all of our attention as he stepped towards a light gray He with amber eyes. Jay sniffed the young fox. The He stiffened, snorting at the Firepack deputy.
"You smell burnt. Like if you spent to much time near fire or sun." Jay pointed out as the gray fox stepped back warily.
"Jay Fire, deputy of Firepack, this is Whisper Fire and Joy Fire." He introduced. "You are?" The small gray deputy cocked his head, eyeing the group of foxes as they shifted a bit uncomfortable, some lips peeling back at the mention of Firepack.
"You don't need to know us,," the ginger fox huffed, lashing his tail. "I'll I know is that we don't care if we smell burnt, weird you care about it. Another thing we know is that we don't except intruders in our home." Her muzzle bared in a snarl, legs crouching in a fighting stance. She sprang from her spot as Jay and I dodged from the path as we watched Whisper and the ginger fox brawl in the dirt, the She getting the upper hand.
"Jay!" I cried to the small deputy, witnessing a dappled, gray fox charging to him. Jay snapped his head to be rammed over, he gasped in surprise as he punted the fox's stomach, twisting in the He's grasp.
"Hmmph, I've expected more from the deputy of Firepack." He grimaced, bringing down a paw as claws sliced through Jay's cheek, the younger fox giving a yelp. Jay's eyes burned with rage as he barreled over, clashing with the He's paws, knocking him off balance. Jay planted a paw on his side, a low grumble sounding in his throat.
Jay's ears flattening at the song of growls coming from the remains of the pack.
"Enough!" The She who took on Whisper commanded, the snarls stopped. Whisper lay on the floor heaving,
"You've proved a worthy opponent, you will stay as a hostage, got it?" The She narrowed her eyes. The three of us didn't answer.
"Or would you prefer to be killed and have your bodies thrown off the mountain?" She offered with a snarl.
"I'd prefer the first option." I answer, Jay and Whisper agreeing with my statement. A bald pelt scowled, nuzzling the ginger fox harshly with his boom stick, muttering unknown words.
"He says, 'what are you waiting for?'" Jay expained stepping up, he knows bald pelt language? I thought in awe.
"What does that mean." The She cocked her head, Jay shook his head sighing,
"He wants you to kill us." Jay stated half-heartily. The baldpelt swiftly tugged at the ginger's ear, earning a growl.
"Don't trust them, they are trying to change you. You are Sunpack, you smell like the sun and you're in the mountains." I pressed my lips in a thin line. I hope Jay knows what he's doing. I pondered hopefully.
"These guys, they are making you pets, well in fact more like servants to defend their territory." Jay grimaced, snarls sounding at the title of being a 'pet'. The ginger stood up.
"You are right, I am Ray Sun." The ginger She stood up, tail whipping in the air as her gaze turned cold.
"But this is our home, not the forest, at the command of the bald pelt's, these bald pelts gave my pack the shelter and food, we need to return the favor."
Our eyes widened.
"Even if it means that we have to kill you."
