Chapter 1
Chapter 1:
Tris' Perspective
I lean forward to grab the gun from David, and I hear it go off. Pain illuminates my right side and I scream. I yank the gun from his grasp, and he comes tumbling out of the wheel chair.
The death serum stings my nose, and my eyes water. It's cloudy, and I can't see. My eyes are closing anyways. As I begin to fall backwards as he claws me in the shoulders, I lift the gun with the little effort I have in me, and pull the trigger.
I don't know where it hits him, but he slumps against me, and I hit the ground. My eyes close, and then I can't hear anything.
***
"DAMN IT, HURRY!" I hear a hazy voice shout. I am moving. I don't know how. My head falls to the side, and I squint. The colors swirl together, and I hear sobbing. My eyes close again. Am I done yet?
***
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. I open my eyes slowly in case anything that awaits me will happen slowly. I feel numb. Inside and out. "She's awake." I hear someone say.
"Tris," I hear him whisper. I am in a hospital room. It's very blurry, and then my eyes focus. Tobias sits by my side, my hand in his. His hand is warm.
"What happened?" I croak. He looks down, and smiles. "You did it." he says. "What did I do?" I say. How did I get here? What happened?
I hate it when I don't know what's going on. Especially when all I remember is holding a gun to Caleb. Did I shoot him?
"You released the memory serum. You activated it, and killed David." he says. My heart leaps. I did it? "Well what about you?" I say. He sighs.
The door opens, and Christina walks in with Peter. "Oh good, you're-" she starts. "What the hell is he doing in here?" I ask. "Did I interrupt? I'll leave if you want me to." Peter says.
"What's wrong with him?" I say. Tobias squeezes my hand, and I look over at him. "Christina thought I should erase one of my parents memory, so I went to Evelyn," he says.
He erased her memory? When was this planned out?
"And I gave her a choice. Surrender her weapons, or choose to reign over the city, and keep everyone here. Including me." he says. I nod my head, and pucker my eye brows.
"And she picked me." he says, and looks at Peter. "So I gave the serum to Peter. He wanted it. He's not who he was." he finishes.
Peter smiles and nods. "What's wrong with me?" I say. Tobias looks at my stomach, and I notice that there's a white wrap around it.
"You've been knocked out on healing serum. About two days." he says. Christina walks over to me, and hugs me. "You have a bullet graze on your right side. Lost a lot of blood." she says.
I wrap my arms around her, and close my eyes. I was almost gone. At the hands of David. I remember being knocked out, but that's it.
"Can we have a minute?" Tobias says. Christina pulls away. "See you later." she says, and walks off with Peter. I glance at Tobias, and then it's silent.
"I almost lost you." he says. I close my eyes. "Come here." I say. It's almost like he was ready to pounce any time. He takes my face in his hands, and kisses me.
I wrap my arms around him, and press my finger tips to his back. The kiss has been waiting. His lips have been waiting for mine, and my lips have been waiting for his.
We pull away, and he wraps his arms around my shoulders. I hold him, and press my face to his shoulder. He smells like Tobias. Safety, skies, and all that is mine.
***
I fall asleep after the doctor gives me more pain serum. I could tell that Tobias didn't want to look at my eye lids.
***
Once I wake up, I am told that I can walk, I just have to wear a wrap. Which isn't all that bad. I'm not in bad pain, it just aches.
"We have to meet Marcus and Johanna at Millennium Park with Evelyn tomorrow to agree on a treaty." he says as we walk out of the hospital room. "Okay, what are we discussing?" I say.
He's about to answer when I see Caleb at the end of the hall. "Beatrice!" he calls. I stop, and he stares at me. I sacrificed myself for him. And he betrayed me. But he's my brother. I forgave him.
I walk toward him, and he stares at me. "You made it." he says. I nod. "We have to go." Tobias says, clearly agitated. "I'll see you later." I say and walk away.
"I can't stand him." Tobias says. "I know," I say. He takes my hand, and I squeeze and he squeezes back. I smile. "Are we taking a plane?" I say.
"Yes," he says. I look at him as we start toward the family tree. "What about Nita?" I ask. "Her memory's gone." he says. I pucker my eye brows. I feel like I should have kept that from happening. She helped me get out of here.
"She wasn't inoculated?" I say. "Apparently not." he says. I pucker my eye brows. I shot her in the side, and she was is prison, but she was never inoculated?
"Well she helped with the plan, why wasn't she inoculated?" I say. "I don't know." he says. We stop in front of the tree, and notice that a lot of plaques were taken down. I assume for protection of people's true past.
"So are we going to stay here tonight?" I ask. "I guess so." he says. I nod. "Christina said that they found a serum in the weapons lab." he says. I stare at my plaque, and look at Caleb's name.
"What serum?" I ask. He crosses his arms. "I don't know, they're trying to figure out because the scientists here of course don't know." he says. I nod.
We stand there in silence for a couple of minutes until Christina comes running up. "They have information on the serum. They have Caleb in a cell. They're questioning him in ten minutes." she says.
"What?" I say. She shrugs her shoulders. "They think he made it, and they're trying to get him to admit what it is." she says. "What do you mean admit?" Tobias says.
"It's a serum that the Bureau harbored when Caleb was in initiation. Either Erudite was working for the Bureau, or Caleb was." she says.
