Chapter 4: Those long-awaited words
Night fell as every biologist was starting to leave the laboratory. Yoongi was leaving, Seokjin was packing up his things for the day as Jimin was staying behind with Jungkook since his intern was not allowed to leave until Jimin was to finally go.
"Do you really have to go..?" Jimin whispered to Seokjin as his friend was already packing up his things to head home. "Can you stay a bit longer so I can get my work done?"
"Sorry, Jimin. This wouldn't be happening right now if you would have just gave something for Jungkook to work on. Now you handle your work with him in the same room." Seokjin added as Yoongi walked up behind Jimin and patted his back with a smile.
"You know, I'm glad we aren't partners. Or else I'll still be here." Yoongi chuckled as Jimin sighed and looked up to see Jungkook still walking around with his hands in his pocket.
"Just give him something to do." Seokjin said as Jimin shook his head. Not wanting Jungkook to touch his studies even for a little second.
"No. I can work this out on my own. I don't need his help!"
"Pft. You're acting like a baby." Yoongi added as he let out a sigh and stretched before yawning after. "Come on my wonderful partner that is not Jimin! We have the choice to leave early so, let's appreciate that!" Yoongi chuckled and patted Seokjin's back so he could follow.
"Don't you want to go home to, Yun-se? She'll miss you if you don't get home early." Seokjin added as Jimin still shook his head.
"I'd rather stay here forever than give him something to work on." Jimin hissed as Seokjin shrugged.
"I don't know what to tell you then..." Seokjin added as he walked away with Yoongi following behind him. Leaving Jimin alone with Jungkook for the night.
It was complete silence. Jungkook was sitting down on Seokjin's chair while his phone was charging on the floor. The boy spinned on the office chair and could only just sit there with a sigh. Gazing up at the ceiling while Jimin just continued working.
"Time would go faster if you let me help... Just an idea." Jungkook said as Jimin took out his wallet while looking at his work, taking out a few wons.
"Want to help? Go to the vending machine and get me a can of coffee. Oh and get yourself something too." Jimin said as he held out the wons to the intern as Jungkook let out a sigh and stood up so he could get Jimin his coffee.
Jungkook walked down the dark hall of the lab where he tried to remember where the lounge was. He travelled upstairs as he opened the door to see that the whole building had the lights off to conserve energy. Jungkook walked down the hall as he looked at the window, realizing that it was raining roughly outside. "Great... Not only I'll leave late.. But I'll leave in the rain and head home drenched!" Jungkook rolled his eyes as he walked to the lounge and stepped in, gazing at the light that came from the vending machine that only supplied little light for the dark.
Jimin was writing out his research on corals and what could be used to prevent their extinction on their own. Of course, Jimin was careful to plan out what chemicals must be put together.
As Jimin was close to concluding his sentence, his phone began to ring as he turned his head to pay attention to who was calling, it was no other than his lovely wife. Jimin picked up the phone and smiled. "Stop calling me, Yun. I'm at work."
"You're always at work... Are you even close to finishing up so you can come home? My Mother gave me the worst day ever and I need to at least smile a bit." Yun-se added sounding tired. Mrs. Lee was very strict and wanted her daughter to be the best stay-at-home bride no matter what happens. She wanted Yun-se to have child, learn how to cook, marry a perfect man and stay at home forever. Yun-se just kept a secret job and worked for herself independently. "You're my best friend... My husband... You should be here."
"But I also have a job to work every single day, morning to night if I have to." Jimin said as he let out a sigh. "I'll be done soon. Okay?"
"Fine. But don't expect me to be awake. I'm too sleepy..." Yun-se added followed by a yawn. "Goodnight, Love you." Yun-se added as she made a kiss and hung up after as Jimin just let out a chuckle and set down his phone to finish writing the formula down. Just then, Jungkook placed the can of coffee down in front of Jimin along with the extra wons.
"Didn't get yourself a thing? Doesn't matter I'm done here anyways. Be quicker next time." Jimin added as he took off his lab coat and placed on his regular coat to leave. "You're free to go now."
"It would have been easier if you allowed me to help..." Jungkook added as Jimin then let out a giggle and turned to the boy and patted his back.
"Goodnight, Jungkook." Jimin added as he held the can of coffee and set the wons into his wallet again to leave. Jimin packed up his things and started to exit the building with Jungkook just following behind. The boy had on his oversized jacket and as soon as he stepped outside, he threw on his hoodie to avoid getting rain on his attire.
Jimin looked to see Jungkook walking on his own through the rain as Jimin just shrugged and made it to his car and turned on the heater to keep warm. Through the mirror on the center of his car, right above the dashboard, Jimin watched Jungkook walk down the sidewalk with his head down so rain wouldn't wet his face. Jimin felt bad and nervously tapped the steering wheel of the car.
"That brat wants to walk on his own! Why can't he just ask for a ride?" Jimin asked as he decided to give Jungkook a lift and take the younger to his house in return as thanks for staying right by the older's side all day. Jimin pulled up right by Jungkook and lowered the window to talk to the boy. "Jungkook. Get in, you'll get sick..."
"Why do you care?" Jungkook asked as Jimin sighed.
"Today wasn't such a perfect day... I get that. But please... Just get in and I'll take you home." Jimin insisted as Jungkook got in the car and sat on the passengers seat. By now, Jimin didn't care if the boy was leaving the seats drenched in rain. Jimin was just glad that the boy actually took the offer. "Where do you live?"
"It's far. Drop me off at a station." Jungkook added as Jimin let out a giggle and shook his head.
"No. I am giving you a lift. Put your address down on the GPS."
"You should be getting home to your wife. She must miss you." Jungkook added as Jimin shook his head.
"She's asleep. Let me just take you home. Take it as thanks for staying at the lab with me. Even if you didn't have a choice or anything to do, I appreciate it." Jimin claimed as Jungkook placed on his seatbelt. "I'm sorry for not giving you a lot to work with today... I guess I was just being cruel to you and was still caught up on the pain from high school..." Jimin apologized as Jungkook looked at Jimin for a moment before he could say something.
"I'm sorry for torturing you back in high school. It's for the best if we throw things from the past behind us. It's not healthy if we are going to be a team." Jungkook mentioned as Jimin began to smile and let out a giggle.
"Even when you apologize, you seem like you're being forced to say it from the teacher." Jimin chuckled as he looked ahead, gluing his eyes on the road. "Don't force it on yourself. I don't want you to fake cry like you did back in high school. 'I-I'm sorry, J-Jimin.' Ah, such a good actor." Jimin laughed as Jungkook only cracked a small smile while he kept his stare at Jimin the whole time.
After that, Jimin finally reached Jungkook's house which was far from the building the two worked in. "Jungkook, the lab is so far from your house. Why did you have to choose somewhere so far?" Jimin asked as he looked at Jungkook open the door to leave Jimin's car.
"I always wanted to become a marine biologist." Jungkook added as he closed the door and waved at Jimin goodbye. Leaving the conversation at that. However, Jungkook didn't realize that he left his wet jacket inside the car and Jimin didn't realize it. The boy lived on his own, far from the laboratory... Jimin just thought it was odd how Jungkook was willing to go far just to work in that laboratory. But Jimin appreciated his passion and devotion for biology.
Soon, Jimin arrived home and turned on the lights inside his car to look around and check he didn't leave anything in the car... That was until he finally noticed Jungkook's wet and cold jacket was there. The older looked at it in silence and thought of what to do.
"I... should wash that for him.." Jimin claimed as he took the jacket into his clutches and left the car with his keys and canned coffee. Leaving behind his briefcase inside the car. Jimin walked into the house and looked around in silence, locking the door behind him and walking to the kitchen to set his can of coffee down and his keys to his car.
Jimin still held the jacket in his hands as he walked to the small laundry room to wash it for Jungkook. Just then, Jimin looked at the jacket silently and tilted his head with a smile. It reminded him of high school. Before Jungkook teased and bullied Jimin, he was a smart young boy and that impressed Jimin. Yet they never became friends or even made up until today. All those years of fighting, Jimin wondered what would have happened if they got along years ago. Where would he be now with the younger?
Jimin looked at the jacket as he slowly brought it up to his arms and hugged it close, recalling the same scent Jungkook had when he was back in high school. Just inhaling the scent made Jimin smile, glad he was able to hear Jungkook apologize today. It didn't mean much, but after getting tortured for so long by Jungkook, an apology meant a lot to the older man now.
