Indigo
We were supposed to enter Midnight pack territory and I could see the barrier in front of me. I looked at Violet but she was humming the songs.
Did she not see it?
I shifted in my seat ready to jump out of the car to stop it if she notices the barrier and gets scared. But she just kept going. Her eyes were focused on the road. The barrier was right in front of us now but before I could say anything Violet drove through it like it was nothing.
How could she not notice the stone barrier? She was still human. Only the ones with a wolf knew about it.
When I could see it, why couldn't she?
Barriers were put across pack territory where humans were more prone to go. It was our safety. Someone without a wolf could see the barrier as a dead end.
What was this girl? Was it her wolf? I had to keep an eye on her when we entered my pack.
We were now in Midnight pack territory. I wanted Violet to relax a bit while I was freaking out about the barriers. She had been driving continuously. There should've be an Inn on the way, I was sure of it. It was safe. I wouldn't have taken this route if it wasn't safe.
Violet parked the car in front of the Inn by the side of the road. Immediately a boy, who was a pack member, came out of the Inn stopping beside the car.
Why was Violet smiling looking at him?
Dammit, Violet!
He looked at her and then back at me. "Alpha Yarbrough?" He said, raising his eyebrows and instantly lowering his head. It was a sign of respect, by showing your neck.
He was a warrior of this pack working here. I found the link that connected to him. I wanted Violet to quickly freshen up so we could leave this territory as soon as possible. I knew he mentioned my presence to his Alpha. I do not blame him though. Sure, his loyalties laid with his alpha.
"Yes. I'm sure you have already mentioned to your Alpha about my presence. Tell him, he doesn't have to worry. I wanted to get home as soon as possible so I chose to come this way. I'm sure Alpha Vincent wouldn't mind?" His eyes were cast to the ground. Violet looked back at me raising her eyebrows and her lips formed a line.
"Just wait. I'm talking to him. And don't smile at him." I linked Violet, a little frustrated, to which she shrugged her shoulders and then nodded her head.
That's when I felt a change in her aura. It was strange. Though it didn't affect her scent. It was so little, maybe a fraction. This guy in front of me wouldn't even have sensed it. It was there but not there at the same time.
Why was I sensing it only now? The aura gave out strong vibes. I couldn't make it out though.
Was it because she entered pack lines?
The guy raised his head up and said, "Alpha Vincent would like to talk to you directly."
Of Course, he does.
"Okay." I closed my link with him and linked Alpha Vincent. The boy stared back at Violet. I growled at him, making him lower his head again. He was mated but that did not mean he was going to get to stare at her. Violet looked back at me and stared at me with that look that said 'really' to which I growled again. She just huffed at it.
"Alpha Vincent." I linked him. We were at the Midnight pack, which was the safest and shortest route to Crescent Moon. Yes! I knew it was the safest. We were basically neighbours. I knew Alpha Vincent wouldn't mind, we were allies in a way.
Both our pack territories met at the stream that divided us, with only a bridge that connected our packs on the inside. The roadway was only meant for traveling outside both pack territories. His father, Alpha William Montanne and my father, Alpha Luciano Yarbrough were allies too.
Vincent was older to me by two years and had taken over the pack two years back at twenty-five. Alpha William Montanne was a really good alpha I could say.
Smart. A straightforward man.
Like his father, Vincent was tactical, strong but stubborn at the same time. Vincent used to come visit us at our pack with his father when we were kids. We have been good friends since then.
His mother and his two-year-old sister were also killed in the attack that killed my parents. Being allies did not only have perks but also had drawbacks. Another reason we were allies was that my mother was the daughter of Alpha Willams's uncle, Axel Montanne. Although Axel Montanne was a beta, he was alpha born. He only had one daughter, my mother Avaluna.
The important point here was Vincent used to always run behind Violet, smitten with her and so was my sister with him. When he used to visit us, Violet's whole attention used to be on him. That stupid guy didn't leave her side even for a minute until he left. Same as my sister. They were best friends and possibly mates.
Possibly!
"Alpha Indigo, Tyler told me there's a human driving the car. That is the only thing I'm concerned about. Is she, trouble?" He straight away got to the point.
Just like his father.
"No, she is no trouble at all. We are going back to the pack together. She just wanted to freshen up, so we stopped by the inn. I'm sure it's no problem Alpha Montanne?" If he knew better, he wouldn't push further.
"Is it her?"
Dammit! I thought he wouldn't ask. The guy had some balls.
Sure this asshole named Tyler here smelled her. There was no point hiding it from him now. Besides, it was his territory.
I got straight to the point too. "It would be better if you kept the information to yourself for her and your own safety, also this guy here, tell him to keep his mouth shut." My threat was crystal clear in the statement.
He was quiet for a while, maybe processing the newly found information. How could he guess it so quickly? I know he wouldn't talk a word about it to another soul on this planet. He cared too much for her from what I had seen. He'd do nothing less to keep her safe. I was sure of it.
Hence the safest route.
He was as devastated as I was after the attack. He had lost his mother and a two-year-old sister after all. The rogue had left nothing of her small frame. She was with her mother when she was attacked, dying in the process.
At the same time, he was also devastated by the fact that Violet, his only best friend, was gone too. I know he loved her. He loved her way too much for my liking. Nevertheless, I wanted my sister away from him.
She was only a baby, dammit!
I had warned him like a hundred times, although I was younger than him. That asshole did not back out one bit. The stupid stubborn Alpha that he was!
So I had to punch him straight in the face once, which got Violet all mad at me. I had to apologize to her and to him. Additionally, I had to listen to a two-hour lecture from mom about manners and not being too overprotective of her, again.
When these two met, there wasn't anyone that could separate them. They were practically glued to each other even at that age. It only made me hate him more. Our parents thought they could be mates.
Pfft! They wished.
Like that was going to stop me from kicking his ass!
He stopped coming to the pack after the attack. After ten years past the incident, he stepped foot in our pack. He talked to me personally, told me how much he missed her and that the pack reminded him of her. I wasn't able to utter a word to him that day. Then when I took the pack, I went to him to keep the allegiance for peace between both packs. Now that she was here I don't know if I'd ever be at rest.
If they end up being mates, I don't know what I'll do.
"I totally understand. Please take care and use the inn as long as you want." There was a hidden emotion in his voice, which only irritated me. Also, he didn't push further. Good for him.
The last thing I wanted was him coming to my pack to meet her. That was if I allowed him. Which I will not. Obviously.
"Thank you, Alpha Vincent." I ended the link.
The guy looked back at me, "You can use it as long as you want and my lips are sealed," he showed his neck in submission.
Good.
"Violet, open the door for me and go freshen up." She got out of the car immediately and opened my door. The guy named Tyler walked ahead of her while I stretched my legs before following her. The guy looked like no threat, my wolf made it sure. He knew better not to try and do something stupid.
After the rogue incident, my wolf was clearly not okay. I had to force him to stop from running behind that rogue. I told him that we didn't want to scare our sister away the first day. We didn't want her to see us tear another wolf apart. We wanted her to trust us completely and not be scared of us or imagine us as brutal beasts.
Tyler showed her to a room to freshen up, while I walked near the couch placed in front of the registration desk. He went into the kitchen and returned back, trying to hide his fear. He wanted to say something for sure.
"Um Alpha, I thought you would want to eat?" My wolf looked at him.
Damn the boy was scared. I was sure his Alpha had scared him as much.
"No, I'm fine," I nodded my head. I heard Violet come out of the bathroom and then out of the room. He turned to her and asked her, "Ma'am do you want something to eat?"
She looked back at me, I nodded my head. "What do you have?"
"Yeah, um, there's chicken noodle soup, sandwich, noodles-"
"Noodles sound good. You got coffee?" she asked.
"Yup. sugar or cream?"
"Cream. Thank You." Tyler turned back to go into the kitchen.
"Let's walk a little outside," I told her.
"Yes, pleaseeee," she stretched the plea, clearly tired. She started running outside before me. The inn was only meters from the edge of the road, named Midnight Inn.
I came out to see Violet stretching her body with her hands up, standing on her toes. She was making those noises you make when stretching, like ehhh!
Focusing on her breathing, inhaling the air. She let go an exhale then moved to stretch, bending down, touching her fingers to her toes and head to her knees. She had definitely learned yoga. I kept looking at what she was doing.
She got up and stretched to both sides and stood up straight. Just when I thought she was done, she started dancing, which made my wolf cock his head to the side, ears straight, eyebrows raised. I let out a big laugh and well that ended up in me giving her pack-life lessons.
Damn.
We left after Violet was done eating. She shouted a bye at Tyler, waving him from the car window with a big smile that formed deep dimples on her pretty little face. Adorable.
I was a little on the edge the way she got along with Tyler. He was talking about his mate which made me think about mine.
Just when he said, "Julie would have been happy to have met you if she was here." I linked him.
"You are not mentioning her to another soul, be it your mate." I threatened him while I just lay there with my eyes closed.
"Sorry Alpha. I was just trying to have a conversation. Alpha Vincent said he'd personally kill me if word got out because of me. I love my mate and I intend to keep the promise for this little girl." He said, as softly as possible. He had already taken a liking towards her. It was in her to make everyone love her. I shouldn't worry more because if not me Vincent would do the honour.
Though I still had to keep Vincent off my territory.
When Violet asked him for the bill, he declined to take it. Of course, Vincent asked Tyler not to take the bill. But I did not want to keep any favours from him. "Take the money, Tyler. I will talk to your Alpha if I have to. Get your mate something from that money. She has unknowingly made her happy." I couldn't sound bad to him, but my voice was still commanding. I told Violet to pay him and he in return asked her to visit again.
Like hell she will leave my territory again. She was not setting foot in this pack ever again.
We were now on our way home. Some two and a half hours more and we would be out of this territory.
"Tell me you want me to play Old Town Road again." She asked, with a smile on her face while she was looking at me from the mirror and then back at the road.
That song was real good.
"Yeah. Go on. How come I never heard it before?" I said.
"Really! You never heard it? Are you for real bro?" She asked, showing me a mock-shock face. She connected the aux and played the song.
"What, some people are just busy," I said and she scoffed.
"Don't you guys have fun, like anything, um, festivals, birthday parties, anniversaries? Anything?" She questioned.
The song playing made my wolf relax a bit. He missed being home with his homies. Those were the only people that kept us going. Growing up we did not really celebrate these things. We did when we were children but after the incidents, it all stopped. Other families in the pack celebrated their children's birthdays.
Every year in June and December we celebrated for the newly shifted pups. It was a kind of encouragement for them. Also, their wolves were to be connected with the pack.
New mated wolves who joined the pack were also to swear their allegiance with their Alpha and the pack. It was a celebration for us. The event went on for days.
Once a year, that was the month of October and November we held a sports event for the newly shifted pups and also the warriors. The sports used to take place in wolf as well as human forms. Even the ones who hadn't shifted had different activities. Not only that the school used to organize different exams like general knowledge, quizzes and much more.
Different stalls used to be organized by the pack members with refreshments, food, clothes and everything else they could provide. Those were the best two months where the pack used to come to life.
The sports events gave us an idea of how strong their wolves were, depending on which month they shifted. So they were divided into categories otherwise that would end up in biasness. It was fun though, our kind of fun. Some families had small parties of their own after their pup's first shift.
On the day of the full moon, the whole pack would be lighted up by lanterns and lamps. The newly shifted wolves took a run with their Alpha along with their parents. There was much to it, to enjoy the life in a pack.
"You'll have to wait and see the amount of fun we have back home little one," I told her.
You have so much to know and learn, Violet.
She had to know about how we praised the Moon Goddess. I don't know if she'll accept the traditions and culture in the pack. I had mentioned about the Moon Goddess before but she did not quite catch it at that time.
"Then I cannot wait to be home," She was beaming with joy. Her aura was jolly, fresh and filled with fondness and most importantly it healed. It was some kind of healing. Along with that what was troubling me more was the way she just drove into the damn barrier.
I thought of focusing on her aura all the way, to see if there are any changes.
I wasn't so relaxed, like ever and at the same time, I wasn't so on the edge. Maybe because I found her I felt like this. She was different though. My wolf and I could feel it. Something about her was different.
She did not have her wolf because of the curse but that did not fit well. She was an alpha. She should have shown at least some signs of her wolf. From her appearance, I couldn't find anything that I could put a finger on, except her aura. I had to find a way to break the curse of hers.
I laughed as she sang on top of her voice to different songs. At the same time, she was also collected with the driving, a good grip on the steering wheel. She wanted me to join in her little 'car karaoke' that she had called it.
Damn. Never done that.
Perks of having siblings.
Being an Alpha brought a lot of responsibilities and paperwork. I could only imagine how pissed Eli would be doing it for me in my absence.
Training with the warriors in the morning, attending the issues of the pack after that, handling Eli's nonsense, going through the history of the new members, handling Eli's tantrums because it was his do-the-chores-day since the day his sister found her mate, taking rounds around the perimeter with Alistair and so on.
It's what kept me busy. Or maybe I wanted to keep myself busy. It would put my mind off of thinking about the curse and how I had to leave my pack. I had to make sure nothing went wrong in my absence. Sometimes, Eli used to pull me out of work for a drink at our spot to talk about what he called 'bralks' short for bro-talks.
It didn't make sense at all. Asshole.
I watched Violet as her mood jumped from a hundred to a zero to a seventy to a hundred with the different songs that were playing. The funny thing was she never thought of talking back to me through the mind link. She always talked out loud. I did not tell her because she looked so adorable while talking. I thought I'd tell and teach her how to talk using the link later.
We were about to cross Midnight territory in the next fifteen minutes and enter our territory just fifteen minutes after that.
It had turned dark now. Violet drove through the silent road, car lights on. She let out a small yawn. Damn, she was tired. She didn't even get to sleep much. I knew I had to call Eli now. His wolf wouldn't take much time to arrive at the border.
"Violet, just half an hour more. And don't yawn. I'll call someone to pick us halfway." She nodded with another yawn and then laughed.
"Eli." I linked him.
"Where are you?" He asked.
"Meet me at the border I asked you to in half an hour. Don't tell anyone."
"Cool." He replied.
"Keep the hundred bucks ready." I reminded him and he laughed.
"Yeah, we'll see Alpha." He said cockily. Ass.
"Cannot wait to see you lose, dude," I replied cockily as well.
"You sure you alright, you don't sound like you. Have you ever heard you?" He knew me way too much. I never initiated a bet. It was always Eli or Vicky who came up with them. In addition, I sounded too happy and like a cocky teenager because of the bet.
Dammit. But he was definitely going to lose his shit.
"At the border in thirty, Eli." I used my normal Alpha voice.
"Yeah, I've already left Alpha." He told me and I closed the link.
"Violet!" I shouted through the mind link with a growl. She needed to stay fully awake driving on these mountainous roads. She turned to look back at me with big eyes, slowing the car.
"Are you trying to scare me? My heart would have leaped out of my mouth right now!" She rushed out after a small scream.
"See. You are fully alert and awake now." She shook her head, still mad at me.
"You'll pay for it." She challenged me, now laughing. I had to keep her talking so she wouldn't sleep.
"Who's meeting us by the way?" She questioned me.
"Eli, my beta. Don't freak out when he loses his shit okay." I told her.
"He'll lose his shit because I am alive?" Her statement was more of a question.
"Yeah. Everyone is going to actually." I informed her. "But no worries, you take your own time to settle down. No one will try to talk to you until you decide otherwise." I told her.
Actually, she wouldn't get to talk to anyone until I decided so.
When we got home, I had to make arrangements so that no one interrupted her space. They were going to be curious about her and I knew word about her would spread like the wind. I had to warn all of them about it.
I just wished it wasn't all a dream..
