CHAPTER 1: Silver Summit
Song: Blinding Lights🎶
********************
Listening to Blinding Lights by The Weekend, I started with my little adventure.
Adventure? Not exactly. It was more like I was on my way to find my cure. To help get rid of the pain I've been going through for almost five years now.
Yes, five years. I've been going five years back and forth with needles sticking in my arms. Five years of continuous diagnostic tests. Of pain. Of cramps and twinges.
I was fifteen when the pain started. It started with a small headache. I ignored it to think of it as migraine or something, but it wasn't even close to it. Gradually as months passed by the pain took over my body.
It felt like I was breaking into something. I twisted and turned in bed to be free from it, not knowing what was happening to me. It felt as if all my arteries and veins were being pulled out of my body. Sometimes it felt like they were knotting themselves in places in my head, my arms, my stomach and every tissue in my body. The feeling of being torn apart when my muscles ached was another nightmare I had to go through. It felt like I was being teared to shreds by some ruthless pain, the feeling of being possessed crossing my mind again and again. Every small organ in my body felt like it were trying to break loose or either constrict themselves, causing me to think it would be my last day. All of my bones banging against each other to break free making me lose my breath.
At the moment I only wished for death.
I had no damn idea why it was happening to me.
My throbbing head did nothing less. All I wanted to do was bang my head on the wall, throw myself off some cliff or maybe drown myself in the middle of the ocean.
The orphanage I was in, Precious Home, did what they could do. They helped me with the hospital since then. I went through maybe a hundred tests altogether to find out what was wrong with me. Plenty of medications, physiotherapy would only end up in more diagnostic tests and the conclusion always answered to 'nothing wrong'.
Everything was wrong!
Violet was incurable!
Seven hospitals! I've been to seven different hospitals, all of them saying that there was nothing wrong with me. They said that my body was as perfect as it should be. Some said it was psychological because, well, I was an orphan. Seeing other kids with their parents and all got me to be all psycho.
Bruh fine!
I went through a psychological test too, which ended up me not being crazy, So yeah.
Slap to your face bitches.
What? Nobody likes being called a psycho to their face.
Just four months ago, I met an old lady in another hospital. We began having a casual conversation just like normal people. Although she was an unknown person to me she didn't appear to me as a stranger for some reason. She had dark black hair and they were pretty shiny and thick. I had black hair too, but nothing like hers.
Orange is the new black. No-oh! Black is the new black.
Her hair was tied into a plait and it ran below her knees, gracefully and radiantly, swaying as she moved.
Oh Wow.
Her eyes were the same color as her hair. Her skin showed signs of aging with a few wrinkles around her forehead and cheeks. Looking at her, she seemed to be in her fifties. I wasn't sure though. Her name was Raven.
She sat beside me in the waiting area and casually started a conversation by asking if I had water to drink. I offered her my bottle that I always carried with me. We then started talking to each other about our visit to the hospital.
She was alone. For an old lady with a sickness she should have been accompanied by someone, right? Although she did not look sick to me.
Well I didn't look sick either and I was still here.
"What are you here for?" She asked a little too excitedly.
The lady was excited to know my pain? Oh great!
I told her about my episodes and how they happened every month and the fact that it was the seventh hospital I set foot in.
The lady kept looking into my eyes, deep as if she was searching for something. Her deep dark eyes were so black and so shiny, I could see my reflection in them. I cleared my throat making her come back to her senses.
Creepy! Point to remember. Strangers can be creepy.
To not sound bad I continued the conversation and asked her why she was visiting. She lifted her hand to bring her plaited hair on her right shoulder and pointed at it.
Obviously!
A smile stretched across her face when I complimented her beautiful hair. I guess the woman lived because of her hair and in return they lived for her too. Even though she looked like she was in her fifties, the delightful joyous smile she had on her face while caressing her beautiful locks, portrayed youth.
That made me smile. You need to find your own happiness, no ones gonna give that to you.
While we were talking, she desperately wanted to tell me something. Her features gave it away that she wanted to get the words out of her mouth. Before she noticed how I noticed she wanted to say something, I questioned her. "Is there something that you want to tell me?" She sighed. So it was something.
Interesting!
"So you did notice it," she said looking into my eyes again.
Was she making it obvious for me to notice her?
"I can help you with your episodes," She continued. I narrowed my eyes on her.
"What? How?" She wasn't crazy, right?
As if reading my expression she smiled while saying "No, I'm not crazy. But you have to know this. These episodes that you are having are not something a doctor or medications can cure. You see, you-you are different. And trust me when I say I have answers to your cure."
I kept gawking at the woman with my mouth open and eyes narrowed.
I was different? Trust her? She had answers? Was she really not crazy?!
Way to make yourself not sound creepy, woman!
I started packing my things. The woman was sure testing me or maybe she was into some gang where they brainwash you into stupid talks and then hypnotize you and then kidnap you to be sold.
I was not going to be sold! I was only twenty!
She realized what I was doing and stopped me. "Listen. Please trust me. If you don't believe me you can confirm it yourself. Keep a track of the next full moon. If you have your episode on the night of the full moon, please make sure you will meet me again. Here take my card," She wouldn't stop speaking as she pushed a card in my bag.
What was she going on about?
I was livid now, "Listen lady with beautiful long hair. You are crazy. You know what, you need to get your head checked instead of your hair. You can't just-". She started smiling, not creepy smiling. A smile you give someone when you adore them. The raven-haired Raven was smiling at my lividness.
Of course, she was smiling. I did compliment her even though I was angry.
"I know one day you will call me, sweet girl. And make sure you do not mention this to anyone. Please keep a track of the moon. You will have your answers when we meet the second time. And I'm sure we will meet." With that, she walked away and I kept staring at her back.
I should change my name to sweetie or adorable. They all used to say the same thing since I was a child. Ever since I remember.
That wouldn't make me sound mad, right?
It was because I met Raven after three months of confirming my episodes with the full moon that has brought me here on this road trip. She didn't tell me the name of the place that I was going to at first. But what I established was she was a witch.
Yes! A freaking witch!
I don't know what got into me, I was much angrier at her than I was scared. No, I wasn't scared one bit. In fact, she was scared of me.
Huh! I know.
My anger was taking over me I guess, I was never this angry before. She sensed it. The next instant she slit her palm with a blade that she pulled out from her pocket. She was so quick I didn't even realize what she was trying to do. I kept gawking at her when she just took my hand and pricked my finger and held her bloodied hand over it.
Ewww!
It just happened so fast and in a matter of seconds, I didn't even have the time to react.
"What the hell are you doing?" I gritted my teeth, pulling my hand out of her grip.
This woman needed to be in a mental hospital!
She took a deep breath while I kept staring at her face with my mouth open giving away the evidence that I was in shock. "This is me swearing to you, that this conversation and the one before this remains between us and only us. You have to trust me on this. You will get your answers when you reach Silver Summit. It is the only way," she said.
Silver Summit. That name caught my attention.
I didn't know if her words or her promising me with her blood made me believe her. Something in me told me to believe her. She didn't appear to me as a stranger and I had no idea why. She told me to have a broad mind about it. And accept what the future has for me.
"Do you know who I am? Please tell me what you know." I begged, wanting to know if she knew anything about me. Maybe my family or relative or where I was from.
She only smiled and said, "You have better things coming your way, Violet. You are strong, little girl. Trust me on this and most importantly trust your instincts. Accept what comes your way and try making peace with it. I can only tell one thing, that is, you are very special and one day you will be powerful too. Make wise decisions and lead a good life." I didn't push her because when she said those words something lit up in me. I felt more spirited.
I still didn't get how I even believed her. Maybe because she was the only hope I had. I thought, maybe she knew where my family was and that she wanted me to find them on my own. I decided not to think much about all of me being special and stuff.
She told me she sensed something in me. She couldn't put a finger on it, only that I was strong but she knew I was going to be powerful.
Like what? Powerpuff girls, Danerys Targaryen? Pfft.
A girl can dream.
I told her I would contact her if I needed anything. She hugged me tightly before we left. I did feel a little safe, I could say. She said it would take me five to seven days. And it would be better if I went alone. So I decided to take the risk.
It wasn't like I had the pain only on the full moon night. It started two days prior and it was extreme on the night of the full moon. It also continued two days after the full moon. I didn't believe it the first time. I thought of it as a coincidence. But it did happen the second time and the third time too. So I met her.
She gave me a map that went up to the mountains and further the tip of the mountains blanketed with snow. I made sure to pack all that was needed on this trip.
I packed three extra jackets, socks, beanies, boots, gloves, five pairs of jeans and shirts. Food, a lot of food plus water. I even downloaded movies so I wouldn't get bored when I stopped for a break.
Listening to songs, waving back at the swaying trees I was going where the map was taking me. It had points like Midnight, Night Walker, Autumn, Glowing river, etc. Crossing all these places I had to reach Silver Summit, my destination.
Silver Summit. I kept repeating the name in my head, it stirred something in me, like it inflamed me with excitement.
It was almost ten at night when I saw a board that read Glowing River with an actual glowing river in my sight. So I decided to camp there. I parked below a tree and got out of my car. The first thing I did was stretch my whole body.
I stretched left with my hands above me and then right and then back and front. I did a little dancing, jumping, and shaking to wake up my whole existence. I only hoped nobody saw me.
Eh! Who cares!
On cue, my stomach made a noise. I quickly got in the car and took out the half sandwich I had left during my first break. I ate it as if my life depended on it. Laughing at myself I drank water and decided to build a fire. I gathered twigs from around the area and bought out my lighter that I packed. I also collected dried grass so that it would light up quickly.
It had started to get chilly. Plus I was near a river. It had to get colder. After building the fire I sat down beside it with a jacket around me.
Ahead of me was a picturesque view of the Glowing river. Nature's gift to these amazing creatures that lit up the aquatic world through a magical phenomenon called bioluminescence.
Nature can definitely put on a stunning show.
Breathing in and out the amazing blissful scent of nature, I decided to lie there for a bit. I gazed up at the stars, twinkling in the moonlight. The dark blue sky was so full of them. Each of those stars shone making themselves stand out with their own light.
White and bright.
The quietness of the night had its own voice. The voice of the water hitting the edge of the river, the tree leaves singing a song of their own with the wind. The insects may be partying with their loved ones being the voice of the night.
I sighed. In five days my life may or may not be as good as new.
What if I had family there? But what if they didn't want me anymore? Why would they put me in an orphanage in the first place? I had to find out, whether or not they want me or not, I was still going to try.
But what if there was something else, if not family? Raven said I would find my cure. So many questions were disturbing me.
Anyways. I was gonna find out.
I had decided to sleep in the car. It would keep me warm for sure. I was about to stand up when I heard a noise of a twig snap in the bushes on the side of the river with a pair of bright golden eyes.
Shit!
I kept staring at those eyes thinking about my next steps. My car was only ten steps away from me. I turned my body to run towards the car when I heard a growl. It made me stop dead in my tracks.
Shit! Shit!
I only turned my head to look back at it. It walked to me woth predatory steps in all its glory with dark black fur and bright yellow eyes and big paws.
It was a wolf.
But this wolf was the size of a horse. Or bigger. It's snout so big, if he decided to eat me, my entire head would fit in its mouth. The slow movement of its paws towards me was only making my heart beat faster.
I took a step back and then one more and one more, but the wolf kept its movement constant. I hit my back on the car. I pushed my shivering hand back in search of the handle when I heard another growl.
This entire trip was a bad idea. It was going to end before it started. Tonight was my last night on this pretty planet.
I love you Earth!
They wouldn't even find my body. This was so bad. So I prayed. I prayed for the man that left me at the orphanage door making sure I got all that I wanted. I still did not know who he was. I prayed for the orphanage that looked after me.
For the doctors who were on the verge of banging their heads on the wall. I prayed for the two-three not so close friends I had and who played with me before they were adopted. I prayed for the Anderson couple who took care of me when I moved to stay in the apartment after leaving the orphanage.
I prayed for Raven, although I did not know her for long but she offered help.
Why would a witch offer help to a human? Whatever her reason, she did trust me with her secret. I mean, she did cut her palm for me or whatever that meant.
I had my eyes closed leaning back at the car. Tears streamed down my face and my body shivered when I felt the wolf in front of me. I waited for it to open its big mouth and tear away my throat. I waited for a minute and then two, but nothing.
Slowly opening my eyes that were cast to the ground, I lifted my head. My eyes took in his big paws with sharp claws. They looked so powerful, they could tear me up into shreds in seconds.
Then came into view its forelegs, all covered in back fur, long and slender at the same time. Further raising my head I saw its chest and its slight vibrations.
This was it, this was going to be the end of me!
I looked further up to see its big snout. Its nose sticky and its upper jaw resting peacefully on its lower jaw.
Was it not going to eat me? Any animal would show its teeth, right?
It waited. It waited for me to look into its eyes. Its eyebrows were furrowed together. Its bright yellow eyes shone brighter than the river, brighter than the stars in the sky. It kept looking into my eyes as if contemplating something. I couldn't predict what its next move was. My heart was still racing as its eyes took me in.
Maybe it was savoring its prey through its eyes before consuming it.
The next second it opened its big mouth. On instinct, I closed my eyes, with the reason for my death right in front of me.
Bye-bye, world. I didn't even get to see the Aurora borealis!
