Chapter 2
We met up with our dad at this place that didn't have a definite name, but the sign said "Diner Restaurant", and for now we're safe enough.
"The important thing is everyone's all right." Dad said, and Mom only nodded in response. "Andy . . . Was anyone actually hurt?" he then turned to Andy, who looked like he was curled in on himself.
"I don't know," Andy voiced in response, sounding almost broken. Out of instinct, I moved my hand to rest on his shoulder, to try and comfort him. "Okay? I-I don't remember it. It was just - it was all confusing." At those words Lauren looked like she was about to cry.
"So, to be clear, you didn't touch them before they touched . . ." Dad started before Lauren cut him off.
"Yes, Dad, they came after him." She voiced in reassurance.
"And after they came after you . . ." He tried to continue again, but he was cut off by Mom.
"This isn't a deposition, Reed." Mom pleaded, leaning forward.
"I am trying to understand the situation. Legally if they don't think . . ." he tried to validate himself.
"Dad," I tried, "I don't think it matters. We - we fought back, and ran when they came. If anything, we're more guilty now, than we were before." I was practically begging him to see my point. Mom nodded, and continued for me.
"The man from Sentinel Services . . ." she began before Dad looked confused and stopped her.
"You mean the police." He stated, hoping what he said was right, but Mom shook her head.
"Sentinel Services." She said in confirmation, "They were just going to take Lauren and Andy, but when they saw Morgan, trying to protect them, they wanted her too." She was almost to her breaking point, "You can talk to Cal, he's the head of the . . ."
"This is way beyond Cal's jurisdiction." Dad cut her off. "Sentinel Services is a federal agency. The only reason you got away is they didn't have enough time to put a full team together." At that all of us were about to break. Lauren had tears beginning to form, but not quite to the point of falling. "We have to go. Now." He finished.
Mom started stuttering, trying to figure out what he's trying to say.
"Go?" I said, "Go where?" Tears I didn't know I was holding back began to fall.
"We have to go where the mutant laws are looser." He answered, "Like Mexico, or . . ."
"Mexico?" Mom was practically freaking out, "Everything we own is at the house."
Dad leaned forward on the table, "The last time Sentinel Services got involved in one of my cases, the suspect disappeared." At that Lauren and Andy's tears started to fall, and I grabbed both of their hands. "I am not gonna let that happen to us. I'm gonna figure something out, I promise. There is nothing more important to me than my family." We all hugged each other, and began to plan out where we were going to stay, for the time being.
Eventually we went to the Caravan Hotel, Lauren and Andy went out to get snacks from the vending machine near by, and dad needed to make a few calls. I decided to stay with mom in the room.
"Mom?" I asked.
"Yes?" She responded.
"If I had told them sooner, maybe we wouldn't be in this mess. Maybe I could have helped prepare them for this, or even have helped Lauren control her powers." I said.
"Morgan, you had no idea that they would become mutants. You couldn't have stopped this. This certainly isn't your fault." She then moved to sit by me on the small sofa in the room, and put an arm around me.
I looked up to her, "Then why does it feel like my fault?" I asked tears welling up in my eyes.
"Morgan, my girl, I know it's hard not to feel guilty, but sometimes you have to know that you can't take on the world." She said pulling me in close.
Not to long after Lauren and Andy returned to the room. Lauren was bleeding, and they both were a bit panicked, but I brought Lauren to the bathroom before mom could see, and cleaned up the cut.
"What happened?" I asked her.
She shook her head, "I was helping Andy begin to learn how to control his powers, but it got a bit out of control." Lauren answered.
"Is that all?" I needed to know if it was something I needed to worry about, but she just nodded, so I let it go, and allowed us to get ready to sleep for the night.
The next morning I heard Mom and Dad talking, but I didn't think anything of it until they started shaking us awake, and telling us we needed to go. We hurried around the room, and I wasn't listening to what was being said until we were outside and Lauren said something.
"Mom. Dad. The truck." She stated, then took off running.
"Lauren wait!" Dad called, running after her.
Lauren threw up a shield, and we all scrambled into the truck. It was a tight fit, but it was better than nothing. Dad then hit the gas, and we flew out of the lot.
Eventually we came across an abandoned diner, and stayed there for the day while Dad ran an errand. The errand supposedly had something to do with getting us out of the country. I watched over Lauren and Andy while they took a nap, and talked to mom for a while.
When dad returned he had found us a new car, and he had told us that we were going to meet someone tonight, and hopefully we were going to be lead to safety. With the assurance we were going to be alright for the time being, I decided to lay down by Lauren and take a nap.
When night fell, we all rounded into the car, and it was mostly quiet other than Andy complaining about the car, and Lauren arguing with him. After the small argument we sat in an uneasy silence.
Suddenly dad said, "We're here." and pulled to a stop.
We all crawled out of the car, then we started walking towards a man.
He asked, "This everyone?" as we neared him.
"Yeah, we're all here." Dad voiced in response, and we continued walking.
"I want to know what happens now." Demanded mom.
The man turned to her and said, "We gather supplies, then we head to the boarder."
"And you can drive us across?" She asked skeptically.
"Policia America's all over the roads; you might as well go straight to jail. Now come on." He sounded annoyed, almost upset.
I silently followed along, hoping everything would be alright, but Mom was about to explode.
"We're not going anywhere until I know what's happening to my family!" She demanded. He turned to face her.
I expected him to yell back, but he was calm when he said his next phrase, "Look . . we know people down there with . . . skills. They track for mutants, but we still got tricks they don't know. Mostly. we get people under the wall. Sometimes over, sometimes even through. And then, after that?" he started, "We get you new names, new IDs. There are churches, families that can help you . . ." Then we all turned as we heard the sound of a car passing.
"What? What is it?" Dad asked, sounding a bit panicked, but he was mostly composed. The man didn't answer immediately, and he stared down the ally we were in. The ally was dark, there was nothing significant about it.
"Does anyone know you're here?" Asked the man, and dad answered immediately.
"No, we didn't say anything."
"Did you tell someone you were coming? Use a computer?" He demanded, turning to my dad. "The phone you called me on?"
"When I called you, I used a new SIM card. There is no way. . . " Dad voiced, but police sirens were able to be heard.
"Looks like they found a way." The man stated uneasily as the cars neared us.
Sentinel Sevice agents began to get out of their cars, and set up their cases, and their weapons.
Agent Turner was there, and he magnified his voice, and said, "This is Sentinel Services. Get on the ground. Put your hands on your heads. If you try to flee or resist, we will use deadly force."
The man growled in anger, and Andy asked dad what to do. He was scared, and you could hear it in his voice.
"There is noting we can do. There must be something . . ." He paused "We can talk to them." he voiced frantically.
"Dad!" I said exasperated, at the same time the man started talking.
"Talk?" He said, "Yeah, no, we're way past that." he then turned to us, and I grabbed my siblings hands. "You have no idea what they have in that car."
"I want to speak to an attorney!" Dad yelled at Agent Turner.
"Dad! Please stop." I begged him. The man also muttered something that I couldn't hear, at the same time.
Dad however continued, "We will only negotiate if one is provided."
Agent Turner, however, wasn't amused, "There will be no negotiation. Get your asses on the ground now!" he called in response.
Sadly, my dad wasn't done yet, "We are Americans. We have rights." he spat at Turner.
"You can discuss that with a judge, Mr. Strucker. Right now you need to think about what's best for you family." Agent Turner said calmly.
Suddenly we heard a loud thump to our left.
"Dad?" Lauren called, as a door was broke down, and a new man with shoulder length hair came into view, with a women with green eyes stood behind him.
"Come on!" Yelled the new man.
"Go! Go Now!" Somebody yelled, but I didn't care who it was. Mom had grabbed my wrist, and pulled me along as we started sprinting into the newly opened doors.
We dashed through an empty parking garage, and didn't stop running, except for the new guy. He stopped, as if he heard something, and yelled, "They're coming! That way! Go! To the hallway!" and motioned to my left.
We all took off in the direction he told us to, not questioning him. I came to the realization that the new guy was a tracker, and must have enhanced senses, because there was no other way he would have heard them.
These weird electronic spiders came out of nowhere, and Andy tripped. I ran back to Andy, and grabbed his hand, as I was not about to leave him behind. Then we began to run again. I briefly looked back to see the spider thing wrap around the long hair man's leg, and the other man shoot light at it.
When I turned back around the spider thing was still chasing us, but the two men were running again, following behind us. We made a turn, but another spider appeared in front of us. We barley were able to turn around and run in a different direction.
It turned out to be a dead end, and the long haired man started punching the wall, and the first man was sending beams of light at the spider chasing us, keeping it at bay. The rest of us watched as more red lights of the spiders appeared.
"They're on the other side!" Called the tracker man, which meant we were cornered.
Lauren and I also began helping the first man at trying to hold the spiders at bay. Behind me I could hear the second man, and the women arguing, but I had all of my focus on the few spiders in front of me. I mostly used wind, but I was able to summon enough energy to hit a few with lightning, but being inside left me with many limits.
Suddenly a purple formed behind me, and we started filing through the portal, first the long haired man, then Lauren, Mom, and I pushed Andy through after he tore apart the spiders, next the first man went through. Two shots were fired behind me, and I jumped through, but not before one of the bullets grazed my arm, and hit Dad in the leg.
"Dad!" I screamed, as I saw him on the floor, and then finally the women went through, and the portal closed, leaving my dad on the other side. "No!" Tears began to fall. I began to push myself away from Lauren, Mom, and Andy. "He should have went through before me." I called, "I should have been the one left behind."
Mom . . . Kate, I corrected myself, looked at me, "How could you say that? You deserve to be safe as well." I shook my head.
"No. He deserved it more." I motioned to them, "He is your husband, and their father." Then I motioned to myself, "I-I'm just a kid you picked up off the street nine years ago." I said tears cascading down my cheeks, and gripping my right arm with my left hand, trying to stop the bleeding.
"Mory. . . please . . . Don't. I need you. Andy needs you. You're our sister. You even look like a Strucker." She said moving towards me, pulling me into a hug.
The others around us watched the strange exchange, not sure what to do. Everything went terribly wrong, and the women was passed out in the first guy's lap. There was a lot that needed to be explained, and a lot that needed to be done. It seemed though, we just needed a few moments to collect ourselves.
