Chapter One

The kids and teachers usually do not stick around after school. But today was special, especially for a lady who makes the most interesting cuisines. She was in charge of the bake sale. The other students had to listen to her no matter how bizarre the requests were. Olivia's worst nightmare was real. She had to obey her worst enemy - Desiree.

"I still cannot believe that Principal Brown put you...in charge," Olivia growled. She put a plate of brownies on the table. "I know how to perfect foods. I should be the boss."

Desiree was tapping a pen on a clipboard. "I will tell ya what, Olivia. I will put in a good word if you work hard today. You can be the boss for the next bake sale."

"The next bake sale is not until next year!"

"Great! Then you will have more time to prepare. I can give you tips if you want."

"No thank you. An expert like me does not need advice from someone who puts mustard in cookies. I suppose that is what you baked. Mustard cookies."

"Sorry, Olivia. I did not make mustard cookies. I made a new treat so this bake sale will get more customers. I will whip up a batch of mustard cookies just for you!"

"Have you forgotten that I am allergic to mustard?"

"Oh, yeah. I forgot."

"You said that a million times. It is always your excuse. I am beginning to think that you want to kill me."

Desiree hugged her. "Why would I want to kill my best friend?"

"Ugh! We are not friends! Now stop hugging me!"

"Awe. You are just saying it so Chloe and Kimberly will not be jealous. No worries. You are all my best friends! The four of us will be together forever."

"I would rather lick the sidewalk than be friends with a bit—"

Desiree interrupted. "You lick sidewalks too? I thought that I was the only one!"

"Desiree. I hope that you go to—"

"Let her go, Desiree," Possum piped in. "Olivia has had enough with the hugs for one day."

The girls gasped. "Possum."

Desiree did as instructed and was lost in his eyes. "Um, I did not expect to see you and Jay. I-I figured that you two would be doing...whatever boys do."

"And miss the bake sale?" Jay spoke. "No way. Once in a while, we need our sweets. We have not had any for a month and a half because of the bake sale. Possum and I want to support you...and Olivia and the other bakers and try new desserts. So what you got?"

Possum rubbed his hands together. "Jay and I will take ten mustard cookies each. Our team and relatives must taste them."

Olivia skipped around the table and grasped his hands. "I know what is going on between you and Desiree."

His eyes went wide. "Y-you do?"

"Yep. You are pretending to be nice to Desiree. I do not know why. But I will tell you this now. It is okay."

He uttered a long whoosh of air. "Of course. Be kind to everyone - unless that you are defending yourself. That is when you start throwing punches."

Desiree tapped said pen on her chin. "How can anyone throw a punch? Punch is not a thing. So do you take off your hands and throw them? But why get rid of them?"

Olivia pulled Possum away from the bake sale. "Gosh. I still cannot believe that she is in charge. She makes me want to hurl."

Jay joined his friend. "Desiree makes us want to spend time with her - which we can never do because you and Chloe and Kimberly are in the way."

She released Possum's hands. "We are doing it for your own good. I do not want you sweet boys to get involved with a sick person. Desiree just confessed that she licks sidewalks. I could not believe it when I heard it. That is what she said. I am stunned that she is not dead."

Possum slid his hands in his pockets. "I am pretty sure that she has her reasons."

She was taken aback by her boyfriend's words. "Oh my gosh." She ran her hands down her face. "What reason is there to lick sidewalks? There is none! She should be in a mental asylum for the rest of her life! She will kill - accident or no accident. She will use one of her knives. She will stab us in the backs - literally."

Possum pulled her into a hug and was about to kiss her head. He changed his mind and rubbed her back. "You and the girls have nothing to fret. She would not hurt a fly."

"Yes," Jay agreed. "Desiree caught one once. Instead of killing it, she set it free. She wanted that fly to have the life that she does not have."

Olivia pulled away. "What life could she possibly want? A psycho like her does not deserve to live. She deserves death. 'Cause she is a lost cause."

Jay frowned. "The only lost cause is—"

"Guys?"

The boys spun around. It was Desiree. She was holding a bouquet of flowers and smiling.

Jay adjusted his hat. "Desiree. Where did you get those flowers? And are you not supposed to be at the table?"

"I will return to the bake sale shortly. I am just making a trip to...an important place."

Possum caught on. "No need to keep it secret, Desiree. We know where you go every day."

She gasped. "You have been spying on me?"

He could not help but smile. "You told us. Remember? You visit the graveyard to talk to your grandma."

"Your dead grandma," Olivia spat. "I am glad that your grandmother is dead."

"Me too. She is not suffering anymore."

"That is not why. I would not want her to still be in this world and watch her disgusting granddaughter fail."
