Chapter Twenty-One

"What button did you press, Cindy?" Jenny asked.

"The purple button," Cindy answered. "The seventh floor."

"That will do," I said happily. "That is the floor that my gang and I need to go to anyway. It contains the surveillance room."

"And that is why I pushed that button specifically."

"You need to go to the surveillance room as well?" Jim questioned Cindy.

She slowly nodded. "Trust me. I did not want to, but I have no other choice."

"What do you mean by that?" Sue asked. "Is there a person who is making you?"

"Yes. But not directly. Indirectly."

I was catching my breath and leaned against the elevator, putting my arm on it. "Why do you have to go to the surveillance room?"

"To get some dirt on Ava. Some real dirt."

Jenny tugged her ponytail. "Ava? You mean Ava Campbell?"

Cindy crossed her arms. "The one and only."

"So you want to get dirt on Ava," Billy said. "Well, there is no reason to go to the surveillance room. There is no dirt there." He reached in his pocket and pulled out a pile. A pile of dirt. "Here you go!"

"Billy, I do not mean actual dirt."

"But you said real dirt!" He sighed and shoved the dirt back in his pocket. "Ah, man! And just when I thought that my dirt would be useful."

"Ava is playing dirty, so I will play that game."

Jenny was annoyed. Not at Cindy. But because of Ava. She hated her with a passion. "What did she do now?"

"You will never believe it! I was shocked myself. And it has to do everything with Caleb."

"Spill it," Jane insisted. "What did she possibly do that would hurt poor Caleb?"

"She...combined her DNA and Caleb's DNA to create a...kid. Her and Caleb's son biologically."

My gang and I were in shock, and our mouths dropped open. We could not believe that Ava would stoop that low!

"That evil b—" Jenny had to stop herself from saying a not-so-good word. "Crub! I meant crub!"

"I am ticked that she made a son for her and Caleb!" Cindy exclaimed angrily.

"Does Caleb know?!" Jim wondered. "Does he know that he has a son?!"

"No! Ava never told him!"

Jenny kicked a wall of the elevator furiously. "This is so like her! Typical! Typical Ava! And you say that I am bad because I am a bully!"

"This is why I need to find something that I can use against Ava. Something that she would not want the public to see."

"Are you saying...that you are planning to blackmail her?" Sue commented.

"I have to. Otherwise, I will not be able to get Caleb's son out of her care. She does not deserve to be a mother, and Cal - that is the name of the child - needs to be with his loving father."

"We will help you blackmail Ava," I said. "Dang. I never thought that I would say the words 'help' and 'blackmail' in the same sentence."

Then we heard a snap. Like the sound of a rope breaking.

Snap!

The seven of us fell and hit the elevator floor hard, and I realized what was happening.

"Guys! The rope holding the elevator snapped! The elevator is falling! Which means that we are falling too!"
