Chapter Two

Beep, beep! Beep, beep!

My "favorite" noises had crept on me once again. I forced myself to open my eyes and groaned and stretched.

"I hate that darn alarm," I commented.

I sat up, and strands of my blond hair fell over my face. Feeling annoyed that I could not see, I tossed back the strands as I reached to my nightstand and pressed the button to shut off my alarm. The sounds ended abruptly, and a wave of relief washed over me.

I did not want to leave the comfort of my bed. I wanted to lay my head back on the pillow and rest my body for five more minutes. But I could not procrastinate, for I had a job to do. The agency needed me!

I dragged myself out of bed and walked up to my dresser. I gathered my usual clothes and put them on. Then I slid on my dark shoes and headed to the kitchen.

I used to live alone in my house, but Sophia desperately needed a place. She was basically homeless and could not live with her sister because Stephanie did not have a permanent home and was moving around the town. So being the good friend that I was, I invited her to stay with me.

Sophia loves living with me, however, I would not be honest with you if I did not tell you that she was annoying sometimes. Granted, she is less annoying than my alarm clock, but still.

I spotted Sophia in the kitchen. She was sitting at the kitchen table and eating a bowl of cereal. She must have seen me because she looked at me and said hi.

"Morning, Sophia," I replied. I strolled up to the fridge and pulled open the fridge door. I found what I was looking for and took out the carton of milk. "I am not having much for breakfast this morning."

Sophia was chewing and swallowed. "But Cassandra, breakfast is the most meal of the day! Eating the right nutrients wakes up your entire body and strengthens your brain for the day."

"I know, I know. I did not say that I was skipping breakfast entirely. Just a glass of milk."

"Milk? That is it?"

"Yep." I opened a cabinet door and pulled out an empty glass. I took off the cap from the carton and poured milk into the glass.

"Boring! You need to have something besides boring milk."

"You are only saying that because you cannot stand the smell and taste of milk."

"The same goes for tomatoes, Cassandra. They are nasty!"

After I drank my cold glass of milk, I said goodbye to Sophia and exited the kitchen. I returned to my bedroom, and it was easy to resist going back to bed. I had on my shirt and pants and absolutely hate being in bed with them on. It is one of the most uncomfortable feelings in the world!

My bathroom door was open, as if my own bathroom was welcoming me in, and I entered. I went up to the sink and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I applied a small amount of paste to my brush, set back down the tube, and mixed the paste that was on my toothbrush with water.

I brushed my teeth really well and kept it up for about five minutes, the recommended time. I then rinsed my brush and set it back on the sink. I smiled, examining my teeth in the mirror, and pushed a small, blue button that had suddenly appeared on the upper corner to the left.

I pushed it, and the tile that I was standing on was actually a trapdoor. It opened, and I found myself falling and going through a thick tube.

You would think that I would be fearing for my life. In fictional reality, I was calm and collective, and that was because I had always been in this situation. I have always fallen through a trapdoor and been sucked through a tube that was as long as a worm stretching its body.

I finally reached the end and landed on a white mattress. It was a bit dirty, but I could care less. I got to my feet and brushed dust off my clothes.

There was a blue door that separated from the rest of the organization and a blue scanner next to it. The door would only open if you had a identity card that was given by the agency.

Of course, I had mine. I reached into the pocket of my pants and pulled out my identity card. It was white and had a scanning code on the back. On the front was a picture of me and my full name. I was smiling in the photo, but also had on a serious look.

I scanned my card on the scanner, and the black screen on the scanner changed to green. I was in. The door slid up, and I walked into the next room.

The floor and walls were blue with gray streaks. There were tables and chairs, three chairs per table, and other agents who were in line to get breakfast. They were holding trays, and the lady who is in charge of making and serving our foods gave them the foods of their choice.

I licked my lips and was about to hurry to get in line when I heard a distinctive voice saying my name. Calling for me.

I turned my head and spotted my friend Kathy. She was sitting at our usual table and had two trays piled with food. When I took notice that the foods were my favorites, I realized that Kathy had gotten my breakfast for me.

Such a great friend.

I hurried to the table and sat in the chair that was next to her.

"Glad that you are here, Cassandra," Kathy said. "I have bad news. Guess who is in charge of the agency again?"
