Chapter Thirty-Eight

All eyes were on Libby. My partner scratched her head and was confused. She claimed that she could have sworn that the person who broke into her house and attacked her was Mary Sue. She also claimed that the intruder's silhouette matched Mary Sue perfectly.

"Plot twist!" Sophia proclaimed.

"It is not a plot twist," Libby argued. "Cassandra, could you please explain to the rest of us, especially me, why you believe that I kidnapped your partner?"

"Gladly," I replied with a proud smile. "Only a Forlot character who showed up in this book has to be the culprit. I could not have done it because why would I want to assault and kidnap my own partner? Kathy could not have done it because why would she tie herself up and gag herself? Besides, I have an alibi. I was at home with Sophia."

"That she was," Sophia backed me up.

"I have an alibi too," Libby claimed. "If you do not believe me, then believe my sister. She was with me all night last night."

"Libby and I were working on a project," June explained. "She was so invested in finishing it. No way would she have time to pull off a kidnapping."

The young scientist said, "Furthermore, why would I kidnap Kathy of all people and blame Mary Sue? If I was on Mary Sue's side - and I still am - what would be my reason for framing her?"

"You want the real worlders to be blamed for something that you did," I theorized. "Kathy and I do not type that often. Sophia has no clue how to use the computer. She just bangs her head on the keyboard."

"The keys are too small for my fingers," Sophia defended her weird action. "It is better for me to use my head."

"What about Ava?" Kathy suggested. "She is a villain. She would have every reason to kidnap me and is not friends with Mary Sue anymore. Plus, she was in this book."

I stroked my chin. "Ava could be behind it...but I admit that I have doubts."

"Why do you have doubts? Ava has to be the culprit. She attacks and kidnaps."

"While I do agree with you, Kathy, something is telling me that Ava did a poor job, and that is rare for her. What would she have to gain?"

"To make fools out of us?"

"Perhaps, but she usually does evil deeds when it benefits her. I do not see this plan benefiting her at all."

"Maybe she is using this small plan to keep us busy while she plots her real plan."

"Would not surprise me any."

Xefente encouraged us to head on home. He reassured us that the real worlders would be fine and that the Final War was not happening. He discovered what Mary Sue was doing and was able to convince the rest of the leaders to put an end to the war once and for all, seeing that no real worlder was at fault here. I needed to hear that and thanked him from the bottom of my heart.

"When you find out who kidnapped Kathy, please give me a call," Xefente said. "I would like to know if you do not mind."

I saluted to him. "Yes, sir."

Ash hugged him. "Goodbye, Xefente."

He hugged her back. "You keep taking good care of Forlot. You hear me?"

The real worlders and fictional characters piled out of the president's office. Only two fictional characters remained, which were me and Kathy. I stayed behind because Kathy was on her knees and rummaging through the president's closet.

"What are you looking for?" I asked.

"Some of my belongings," she answered. "Whoever kidnapped me also stole some of my stuff and stored them somewhere in this room."

"What stuff did the kidnapper take and hide? I would be more than happy to help you search for them."

She looked at me. "No, no, no. You need to escort Mary Sue back to Forlot and make sure that she stays in the asylum this time."

"I am not leaving you."

"And I do not want us to deal with Mary Sue. I am sick and tired of dealing with her when you and I could be stopping bad guys and kicking butts. It is no fun with Mary Sue. It is just utter annoyance."

"You can say that again." I brushed away a strand of my hair that was blocking my eyes. "You sure that you do not want me to wait for you?"

"No, Cassandra. Just go and take Mary Sue back where she belongs. I will find my way back to Forlot. I have a map."

"Okay. And you have your phone on you?"

"My new phone, yes. I will call you if I get lost."

We said our goodbyes, and as soon as I disappeared around the corner, Kathy sprang to her feet and scurried to the president's desk and pulled open a drawer. She took out a folder filled with papers and laid it on the desk. She opened the folder and picked up the piece of paper that was on top of the others. She skimmed it.

The paper was actually a bill that Kathy had written, and like most bills that turn into laws, this bill had signatures from each and every real world leader. And no, the signatures were not forged.

Kathy somehow tricked the leaders into signing the bill. The bill clearly stated that the leaders and their superiors would give up their countries and hand them over to her. Kathy's plan was to rule the world and make both real worlders and fictional characters her slaves. It seemed like that would be the new fictional reality.

Of course, she had to give Mary Sue credit. She let out Mary Sue the first time and the second time in order for there to be a distraction.

Too bad that Kathy did not consider Sophia's sister, Stephanie.
