Chapter Twenty-Three

I woke up and let out a moan. I regained consciousness, and every muscle in my body ached with pain.

"Oh my gosh..." I muttered to myself, feeling the severe pain that was running through me.

I glanced around. I was in a large and narrow room. The floor was red, and the walls were made of bricks. It was also pretty dark. The reason why I could see was because of the dim light that came from a lamp. The lamp dangled from the ceiling and swayed back and forth.

I noticed that both of my arms were raised and tried pulling them away from the wall. It was no use. I was afraid of that.

I tilted my head up...

...and saw that I was chained to the wall.

I had a hunch about that.

I then realized that I was not alone.

Margie, Nigel, Gretel, Mrs. Sanders, and Mr. Hawk were there and awake. All six of us were standing up, and our wrists had grey handcuffs on them. The handcuffs were attached to grey chains that were on the wall. This is the order of who we were standing next to from your left to your right:

Mr. Hawk. Mrs. Sanders. Nigel. Margie. Me. And Gretel.

"Mom!" Nigel shouted to his mother.

"Nigel," Mrs. Sanders said his name. "My beautiful boy. Are you alright?"

"I am...okay. My head is aching a little though."

"I do not think that Nigel likes being called beautiful," I said informed to his mom. "He is a boy. Almost a man."

"Hansel, that was so uncalled for," my sister scolded. "And a bad time too. We are chained up."

"Did he hurt any of you?" Mr. Hawk asked.

"Who are you talking about?" Margie questioned. "And how did you and Mrs. Sanders end up here?"

"With my...help."

Margie, Nigel, Gretel, and I recognized that voice in an instant.

"Dr. Maxwell," the four of us whispered to one another.

Dr. Maxwell strolled over to us. He had on an evil grin, and his arms dangled to the sides.

"Finally. The gang is all here," he said in a creepy tone. "I have been waiting for this moment for almost a year, and the day has come."

"What do you want?!" I demanded. I was angry.

He snorted. "I have no use for you."

"Then why did you kidnap me?! Why did you kidnap us?!"

He frowned and shushed me. "Be quiet. You will find out why. Just be patient." He turned to Mr. Hawk. "Greetings, brother of mine. It has been a while, has it not?"

Mr. Hawk let out a growl and leaned towards him as much as he could. "Hugo...if this is another plan to get revenge on me, you are sadly mistaken."

"Excuse me? I am sadly mistaken?" The scientist clicked his tongue. "I am sorry, but you got that backwards. You are the one who should be sadly mistaken."

"My friends will realize that I am gone and come looking for you, Hugo, because they know you. That you have always desired revenge against me. And for what? Nothing."

"Nothing? Nothing?!" He clenched his hand into a tight fist and punched the wall that we were chained against, creating a hole in the process.

Mrs. Sanders shook. So did the rest of us. The only person who was not scared of the scientist's rage was Mr. Hawk. My guess was because he and Dr. Maxwell are brothers, and he was used to the anger and rage.

"You think that it was nothing...but it was something...for me," Dr. Maxwell explained. "What you did all those years ago...when we were young...I can never forgive you for that."

"I stayed out of your business and only minded my own," Mr. Hawk stated.

"Until you went to the other side. The monsters' side! It caused us the company!"

"You, Henry O'Connor, and our father knew exactly what you were doing, and I had to stop it."

"Stop calling him our father! He was never our father!"

"He was when he took both of us in."

"Silence!" Dr. Maxwell slapped a hand over his brother's mouth. "The past is in the past, and I will have my revenge. I have planned it carefully and decided that I will take my wife and children." He gave Mrs. Sanders a sickening glare. "And you..."

She shook some more. "No...Hugo, do not..."

"You were mine once. You will be mine forever. My wonderful and loyal wife."

"No! Never!"

"My mom does not want you!" Nigel protested, backing up his mother.

Dr. Maxwell laughed. "Funny that you should say that...considering that Margie will be my daughter, and you are my son."
